WATCH: Ohio State’s Archie Griffin dots the i #GoBucks

Ohio State football is currently limping to victory against the Akron Zips at halftime (there’s still time) and although the demeanor around the season opener is more on the somber side, there is some reason to celebrate. This year is the 50th anniversary of Archie Griffin winning the 1974 Heisman Trophy.

Griffin has done so much for Ohio State, including continuing to contribute in the community even after his playing days and it is nice to see him join the select few non band members celebrated by ‘dotting the i’ at halftime.

In case you missed the memorable moment, you can catch it thanks to the Big Ten Network’s social media post.

Griffin is just as good of a person off the field as he was a player on it, so seeing him celebrated in this fashion makes everything right in the scarlet and gray universe.

Ohio State great Archie Griffin celebrated a milestone birthday this week

In case you missed it, Archie celebrated a big birthday this week! #GoBucks

The only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy turned 70-years young this week. Former Ohio State legend, Archie Griffin was born in Columbus, Ohio on August 21, 1954, and would eventually change college football forever. His list of on-field accomplishments is longer than most and his contributions to the Ohio State football program didn’t stop when he stopped lacing his cleats.

The two-time All-American was once the CEO of the Ohio State University Alumni Association and served as an assistant athletic director. This has been a momentous year for Griffin as a statue of himself was unveiled at the Rose Bowl this past week and he is having another unveiling of a statue at Ohio Stadium this upcoming week to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his first Heisman Trophy winning season.

Archie Griffin statue to be unveiled at Ohio Stadium on August 30

Immortalized forever at Ohio Stadium #GoBucks

Just this past weekend, Archie Griffin, the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner in college football history had a statue unveiled in his honor at the Rose Bowl. Ohio State Athletic Director, Ross Bjork announced shortly after that the same honor will be bestowed on Griffin outside Ohio Stadium.

No one is a bigger ambassador of college football or The Ohio State University than Griffin. It probably should’ve happened much sooner, however, this seems like a fitting year as 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of Archie winning his first Heisman in 1974.

The statue that will be unveiled on August 30, the day before the season opener for the Buckeyes, is a gift from the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation. It will be a replica of the one that now stands near the iconic Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

When you think Ohio State football, Archie Griffin is among the first to come to mind. The entire opening weekend of the season will be one celebrating Griffin. Not only will his statue be revealed, but Archie will have the honor of dotting the “I” in Script Ohio. He will become the only 16th non-band member to do so.

Archie Griffin has statue unveiled at Rose Bowl

No one more deserving #GoBucks

Archie Griffin is royalty in Columbus. As the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner in college football history, Griffin is also a national treasure and one of the greatest ambassadors of the game.

Archie had an incredible career at Ohio State. As a four-year starter, Griffin would rush for over 5,500 yards and was at one point the all-time leader in rushing yards. While toting the rock for the Scarlet and Gray, the Buckeyes would play in four Rose Bowl games.

Although OSU went 1-3 in those four games, Griffin clearly left his mark. In those four Rose Bowls, Archie rushed for over 400 yards and was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1990. Now he’ll be immortalized for all time as a statue of the Buckeye running back was unveiled at the Rose Bowl on Saturday.

When asked about the honor Griffin spoke as eloquently as ever praising those who helped him achieve the honor.

“It means so much it’s indescribable,” said Griffin, one of two players to start in four consecutive Rose Bowl games. “I was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time with the right people to allow me to be on great teams that did so well. With me having a statue, I look at it as an honor to the teams that I played on.”

Always a class act, Archie Griffin epitomizes what college football should be all about. There may be no one more deserving of this honor that has been bestowed upon him. Always making Buckeye Nation proud.

WATCH: Archie Griffin accepts invitation to ‘dot the I’

Pretty cool. #GoBucks

In case you missed the news last week, Ohio State all-time great running back, and two-time Heisman winner Archie Griffin will be “dotting the i” in Script Ohio this fall. It’ll happen at halftime of the Akron game and it’s really been a long time coming.

But if you haven’t seen it, the way that the news was broken to Griffin was pretty unique. In fact, it was the OSU marching band that officially extended the invite for the honor, and thanks to the Ohio State marching band YouTube channel we can all get a look at how the news came to Archie and how touched he was to humbly accept.

Take a look below and watch the short video that shows the emotion and reverence Griffin has for taking his place in “college football band history.”

Ohio State football legend will dot the I against Akron

A huge honor for Archie

As you know, the tradition for Ohio State’s marching band when performing script Ohio is that a sousaphone player will dot the I.

Over the course of the history of this act, a short list of Buckeye legends have had the opportunity to replace a band member in the famous setting which includes [autotag]Earle Bruce[/autotag], [autotag]Jack Nicklaus[/autotag] and [autotag]Woody Hayes[/autotag].

You can now add 2-time Heisman Trophy winner [autotag]Archie Griffin[/autotag] to that group, as it was announced on Thursday that he will dot the I during the season opening game against Akron.

Griffin has been a mainstay with the Ohio State athletic department, holding titles such as president and CEO of the alumni association, and assistant athletic director.

It’s quite an honor to be selected to dot the I, and it’s a long time coming for Griffin. We can wait to see him on the field once again.

Archie Griffin to receive huge honor at the Rose Bowl

This is a pretty cool honor among all the other honors Griffin has received. #GoBucks

You know you’ve reached an elite status in life when there’s a statue built in your honor. In the case of former Ohio State running back, Archie Griffin, he’s also won a couple of statues.

Still, winning a statue and having one built in your likeness is totally different, and now it appears, the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner will be getting a statue built in his honor at what many consider the grandest college football stadium in the world.

The Rose Bowl announced on Friday that it will be building a statue of Griffin will be located near the Stadium’s Court of Champions. There will also be a Legend’s Walk created to celebrate the 19 Heisman Trophy winners that have played in the Rose Bowl Game. In addition to Ohio State and Griffin, student-athletes from schools such as Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon, UCLA, USC, Wisconsin, and more will be honored.

Griffin is one of just two players to have started in four Rose Bowl games. He is a member of the Rose Bowl and College Football Hall of Fame.

So when is the unveiling and dedication of the statue and Legends Walk occur? There is not a finalized date as of yet, but according to the release it will be sometime in August 2024. As more information becomes available, we’ll be sure to provide details.
