It should continue its success against top opponents.

Clemson was destroyed by Georgia, and QB Cade Klubnik threw for just 142 yards with an interception. He didn’t show enough, and the Tigers couldn’t get the ground game going. While one can discount that it was taking on Georgia, it didn’t show enough to suggest it can cover this size of a spread against a capable Sun Belt side.

The Tigers should be craving some easier competition, and Klubnik did throw for a combined 7 touchdowns in the 2 non-Power 4 games Clemson played a season ago. Expect him to be able to get his rhythm back.

Even as part of a multi-team parlay, including UNC straight up is not a wise play, and sucks all of the value out of your ticket. Over the long term, betting such heavy favorites is not a good betting strategy.

Against the spread

APPALACHIAN STATE +19.5 (-115) is worth a look. Remember, these teams played an epic 63-61 game in Boone last season, with the Mountaineers giving the Tar Heels all they could handle. Will we see anything close to that? It’s doubtful, but this is a big game for Yosef Nation and the App State fans, and the Mountaineers should be able to keep it within 2 TDs.

Over/Under

OVER 58 (-110) might be the best play on the board in this battle.

Again, we had 124 total points in last season’s matchup, with both sides eclipsing this total on their own. We aren’t going to see that again. But these teams suddenly didn’t become Iowa or San Diego State, i.e. teams which have lockdown defenses. We’ll see our share of points at Kenan on Saturday, just not a video game like at Kidd Brewer Stadium last season.

The Chanticleers won as a 2.5-point underdog at Marshall 24-13 on Saturday. For Coastal Carolina, the win was a bounce-back after the team’s lone setback of the season, a 49-21 loss to Old Dominion Oct. 15. CCU is 29-4 over the last 3 years; over that stretch the Chanticleers are 16-2 on home turf.

Appalachian State has played a tougher schedule than Coastal Carolina, but in an odd fashion. ASU played current No. 15 North Carolina and Texas A&M early. In October, the Mountaineers played 2 FCS programs, lost at Texas State (as 19-point favorites Oct. 8) and defeated Georgia State (Oct. 19 after a bye week). In that game against GSU, Appalachian State benefited from a plus-3 in turnovers and had multiple short-field scoring drives.

Both ASU and CCU are solid in the red zone on offense, but figure the Chanticleers as being the better defense in forcing field-goal attempts.

This midweek night game spells the Mountaineers’ 2nd road games since Sept. 10, and things could be wonky early. A misfire seems plausible enough, and there is a sliver of value to COASTAL CAROLINA (+125).

Against the spread

Peg the ML play as the best side in this one. PASS.

Over/Under

Both teams are similar in many respects. For the purposes of pegging a wager, we can focus on their success in moving the ball. The Mountaineers have gained 459.6 yards per game (24th FBS), and the Chanticleers have pounded out 435.0 YPG (36th).

Appalachian State has a better defense on paper, but success-rate figures are not as kind to the ASU defense.

When playing in games with single-digit points spreads, both sides have trended toward scores eclipsing lined totals. And that’s the play for what is forecasted as a good-weather game Thursday night.

Coach Shawn Elliott and the Georgia State Panthers struggled out of the gate with an 0-4 start. But then they won at Army 31-14 Oct. 1 and defeated visiting Georgia Southern 41-33 Oct. 8 heading into last week’s bye. The Panthers hope this is the start of a successful second half of the season.

Appalachian State is 2-2 after shocking then-No. 6 Texas A&M 17-14 on the road Sept. 10. The Mountaineers followed that with a 32-28 thrilling victory over visiting Troy but then lost at home to James Madison 32-28 Sept. 24. As if it couldn’t get any worse, it did. The Mountaineers lost as 19-point favorites in the next game, falling at Texas State 36-24 Oct. 8 before having last week off.

Both Sun Belt teams need this game to get things right as they continue the conference portion of their seasons.

Both teams can score. Georgia State is 3-3 O/U and Appalachian State is 4-2.

The Over has cashed tickets in 3 of the last 4 meetings between these two. The one outlying game was a 17-13 win by App State in 2020.

Georgia State averages 29.8 points per game and yields 33.3 PPG.

Appalachian State scores 35.2 PPG and surrenders 28.8 PPG.

I expect OVER 58.5 (-110) to be an easy wager.

Troy comes in after beating FCS Alabama A&T 38-17 while Appalachian State comes in after stunning then-No. 6 Texas A&M 20-17. One of these things is not like the other.

The key in this game will be the ability of the Mountaineers to avoid a letdown after such a huge win.

Coach Shawn Clark has this team in a groove to start the season. After scoring 40 points in the 4th quarter against North Carolina, the team went in the entirely other direction in Week 2.

Against the Aggies, the Mountaineers ran 80 plays compared to the 38 runs for Texas A&M. They were able to milk the clock and avoid letting the favored Aggies get any momentum.

Troy is a tough opponent with a good defense. But it is far from what Appalachian State has already faced this season. If a letdown does not occur, Troy will be in a bit of trouble.

Both teams will look to win their 1st conference game of the season. Expect a hard fought, low-scoring game. Which is why I favor the underdog in this game. TROY +12.5 (-110) is my FAVORITE PLAY in this contest.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 52.5 (-112).

App St. has scored 61 points in a game. It has also scored 17. This team is a mirror of its opponents. Troy wants to have this a low-scoring game and App State can oblige. Although it could surprise and go Over, I see UNDER 52.5 (-112) as a safer play.
