Michigan finished unranked in final 2019-20 AP Top 25

The final AP Top 25 rankings came out on Wednesday, and the Wolverines finished where they started.

Well March was mad for other reasons as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) not only canceled the Big Ten Tournament and NCAA Tournament, but sports in general for the time being.

Michigan was hoping to gain some ground and make a run, but after dropping in the rankings following losing three of its final four, the Wolverines ended up where they started: unranked.

Still, Michigan finished with some impressive wins in the 2019-20 season, including over No. 2 Gonzaga (one of two losses for the Zags), No. 7 Creighton, No. 9 Michigan State and No. 25 Iowa.

Some of the maize and blue’s losses were to ranked units as well, such as to No. 12 Maryland, No. 13 Oregon, No. 14 Louisville, No. 17 Wisconsin, No. 19 Ohio State, No. 21 Illinois as well as to MSUU and Iowa in the road games of those matchups.

Regardless, it was a surprising season in many ways for head coach Juwan Howard in his first year, as Michigan showed glimpses of dominance. But the team was hurt mostly by key injuries and struggled at times on the defense end with the change in strategy.

Michigan falls out of latest AP Top 25 poll

Where the Wolverines fall in the latest rankings after a loss at Iowa.

[jwplayer uefZ7nuf-XNcErKyb]

Michigan basketball continues the up-and-down look of the 2019-20 season, as it struggles to secure victories down the stretch without star forward Isaiah Livers.

The Wolverines had but one game this past week, following up the close loss on the road at Minnesota last Sunday with another close loss, again on the road, this time at Iowa on Thursday night.

The script for both was remarkably similar, despite Juwan Howard’s crew changing things up. Still, despite frequent doubling of big man Luka Garza in the post, the forward/center still managed to put up 33 points in the affair, and uncharacteristic fouls, mixed with questionable ones, in the second-half helped the Hawkeyes take down the Wolverines.

Coming into the game ranked No. 19, could Michigan basketball hold on?

Turns out, no, as with the mounting losses, the Wolverines fell out of the AP Top 25 entirely. Also, they no longer have the best win, as one-loss Gonzaga fell to No. 2 behind fellow one-loss team, Baylor, in this week’s rankings.

Up next, Michigan faces a currently unranked Penn State — a team that was just behind the Wolverines in the rankings at one point in time — at home, before hosting No. 21 Illinois, going to unranked Nebraska, then hosting No. 24 Rutgers.

With Iowa moving into the rankings at No. 19 — Michigan’s last spot — the maize and blue have two wins over ranked teams: the win over Gonzaga and a December win over the Hawkeyes.

Notre Dame Football: Final AP Poll Rankings

Navy of all teams ends up being the only ranked team Notre Dame beat in 2019, a 52-20 domination in November

After LSU defeated Clemson on Monday night there wasn’t much debate as to how really 1-3 would look in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll, but where might Notre Dame land was a question for Fighting Irish fans.

I went through that a bit last week and made my best guess here, where I had Notre Dame checking in at 11.

Well, the final poll is out and I was pretty close, but not perfectly on.

  1. LSU
  2. Clemson
  3. Ohio State
  4. Georgia
  5. Oregon
  6. Florida
  7. Oklahoma
  8. Alabama
  9. Penn State
  10. Minnesota
  11. Wisconsin
  12. Notre Dame
  13. Baylor
  14. Auburn
  15. Iowa
  16. Utah
  17. Memphis
  18. Michigan
  19. Appalachian State
  20. Navy
  21. Cincinnati
  22. Air Force
  23. Boise State
  24. UCF
  25. Texas

So I was wrong in having Wisconsin drop further than they ended up doing, I just thought that two losses in a row to end the year, against top-notch competition or not would see them drop further.

Perhaps the most interesting thing in the final AP Poll for Notre Dame fans isn’t that they finished 12 instead of 11 or crack the top 10, but instead that Navy of all teams ends up being the only ranked team Notre Dame beat in 2019, a 52-20 domination in November.

Michigan stays put in latest AP Top 25 poll

Where the Wolverines rank after beating Purdue but losing on the road at Minnesota.

Meet the new ranking: same as the old ranking.

Michigan basketball went 1-1 this week, beating Purdue in double-overtime, but losing on the road at Minnesota, after a commanding first-half lead all but dried up by halftime.

As a result, the Wolverines saw little change — read: no change — in the latest AP Top 25, released Monday afternoon. Michigan remains at No. 19 overall.

The maize and blue still have the best win in college basketball as No. 1 Gonzaga’s sole loss — the Wolverines’ only ranked win at the moment. Michigan has losses to No. 8 Oregon in overtime, No. 11 Louisville, No. 15 Michigan State and No. 24 Illinois.

Michigan has still yet to face No 17 Maryland or No. 31 Ohio State — the latter of which has been on a significant losing streak after nearly attaining No. 1 overall status.

Notre Dame Football: Will Irish Crack Top Ten in Final AP Poll?

Notre Dame’s best win ends up being over Navy who will finish the year as the only ranked opponent the Irish defeated in 2019.

I’m well-aware that if there isn’t a “No. 1” next to your name at the end of the season that if you’re a blue blood in college football that the number ultimately doesn’t matter a whole heck of a lot.

With that said, I’m legit curious as to where Notre Dame will rank in the end of season polls as they won their final five contests of the regular season yet saw almost no change, going from 16 to 14 between October 27, right after the Michigan loss and December 8, after conference championship weekend.

So where will Notre Dame fall in the final rankings that will come out after LSU and Clemson play for the national championship next Monday?

In order to figure that out we have to look at the current rankings and see what has changed or who may potentially fall.

Spots 1-3 will remain the same three teams with the title winner ending up first while the runner-up will check in at two and Ohio State will be three after falling in a thriller to Clemson.

Number four will likely go to 12-2 Georgia who won the Sugar Bowl as Oklahoma will fall and I’m fully on-board with that.

How far might that be?  Not far enough to really effect Notre Dame but the 12-2 Sooners will likely check in no-better than five but at worst you’re probably looking at number eight.

Along with Oklahoma you will most likely see Oregon, Alabama and Florida at five through eight as you now enter likely Notre Dame territory.

I don’t think the Irish’s 33-9 win over Iowa State was dominating enough to pass up Penn State who got a hard-fought win over Memphis in the Cotton Bowl, but it was still convincing nonetheless.

The nine through eleven range is exactly where I have Notre Dame coming in with the most logical case probably being for them to be 11.

Here’s why:

Penn State was already ranked ahead of Notre Dame and perhaps they didn’t dominate the Cotton Bowl but they were in control for the vast majority against a good, not great Memphis team.  In no way, shape or form does Penn State deserve to fall behind the Irish.

The debate to me comes in at who gets set at No. 10: Notre Dame or Minnesota?

Both the Irish and Golden Gophers finished the season 11-2 but to me, Minnesota’s wins are better than Notre Dame’s and that should be taken into consideration.  Minnesota has a win over top ten Penn State (according to my poll, anyway) as well as Auburn who will finish in the top 15.

Notre Dame’s best win ends up being over Navy who will finish the year as the only ranked opponent the Irish defeated in 2019.  That has to count for something even if Minnesota’s out of Big Ten schedule consisted of South Dakota State, Fresno State and Georgia Southern.

From there I think you find your next gap.  Here is how I would rank the rest of my final top 25 and here’s why for each:

12.  Baylor – three losses but what was their best win?  Playing Oklahoma closely, twice?
13.  Utah – What looked like a likely College Football Playoff berth at the start of December ends with an embarrassing loss where the Utes appeared to have no interest in playing a very average Texas team.  Perhaps 13 is generous for them.
14.  Auburn – Some great wins along the way but four losses are four losses, even if they came against largely SEC teams. Minnesota beating them on New Year’s Day keeps the Tigers from a top-ten finish.
15.  Wisconsin – Four losses for the Badgers who gave away the Rose Bowl and who I still can’t understand for the life of me how they lost to eventual 6-7 Illinois.
16.  Memphis – fought hard against Penn State in the Cotton Bowl despite going through a head coaching change so falling only one spot (Minnesota passes them) feels justified.
17.  Michigan – No shame in losing to Alabama as I keep them exactly where they were entering bowl season.
18.  Iowa – Destroying USC knocks the Trojans out of the top-ten and wraps up a season that saw the Hawkeyes finish with ten victories.  It’d be a hair higher had they not lost to Michigan head-to-head.
19.  Appalachian State – Had they played and beat someone better than North Carolina perhaps I’d have them higher but a great accomplishment nonetheless to finish with just one loss and in the top-twenty nationally.
20.  Navy – Since the final regular season poll was released they dominated Army and snuck by Kansas State in the Liberty Bowl and deserve a slight bump.
21. Cincinnati – All the credit in the world due to Luke Fickell who has the Bearcats humming after dominating Boston College.  My only question is how long before he’s back in the Big Ten?
22. Boise State – It was a great year until Chris Peterson took out a years worth of frustration on his former team, riding off into the sunset and dominating Boise State.  A solid but not great season for the Broncos.
23.  Air Force – Controlled the line of scrimmage and the Cheez-It Bowl versus Washington State as the Falcons record their first 11 win campaign since 1998.
24.  Texas A&M – They are still on the short list of most disappointing teams in 2019 for me but at least the Aggies ended the season on a high note, defeating old conference-rival Oklahoma State.
25.  Florida Atlantic – The Owls finish the year 11-3 after beating up SMU in their bowl game.  An impressive showing worthy of praise after Lane Kiffin didn’t coach the bowl game due to accepting the Ole Miss job.

That’s my best guess at what 1-25 will look like in the final AP Poll.  Thoughts?  Share them in our Fighting Irish Forum!

Michigan basketball drops in latest AP Top 25 poll

The Wolverines dropped in the first AP Top 25 of 2020 after losing at Michigan State.

After going into East Lansing shorthanded with Isaiah Livers dealing with a groin injury, it was a tough matchup for No. 12 Michigan against rival No. 14 MSU.

The Spartans, led by senior point guard Cassius Winston flexed on their home court, never once surrendering the lead, despite the Wolverines’ best efforts in the loss at the Breslin Center.

Afterwards, the AP voters saw two teams moving in opposite directions, and the once top 5 Wolverines now find themselves near the bottom of the AP Top 25. While the win catapulted MSU up to No. 8, Michigan dropped just as much as the Spartans rose, coming in at No. 19 in the latest rankings.

Michigan still has the best win on the season, as No. 1 Gonzaga’s only loss thus far, but also has losses to No. 8 MSU, No. 9 Oregon in overtime, and No. 13 Louisville.

Michigan will still have to contend with MSU once more this season, and will face No. 20 Penn State later this month, MSU and No. 11 Ohio State in February and will end the 2019-20 regular season against No. 12 Maryland in College Park.

Look: Uga’s 2020 Sugar Bowl experience is much more pleasant than last year’s

Uga’s 2020 Sugar Bowl experience is much more pleasant than last year’s in New Orleans

Uga X, the beloved mascot of the Georgia Bulldogs, met up with Baylor’s artificial Bear before this year’s Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

Of course, this meeting is a little different than last year’s encounter with Bevo, the official mascot of the Texas Longhorns. Bevo charged at Uga, giving fans a virtual representation of the beatdown that was to come in the game itself.

Here’s that highlight as well.

Charli Collier and Celeste Taylor Earn Weekly Honors

Charli Collier and Celeste Taylor took home Big 12 weekly honors for their contributions in getting Texas into the Top 25.

Fresh off of their big win against the number one ranked Stanford Cardinals, two members of the Texas women’s basketball team are taking home weekly Big 12 honors.

Charli Collier was named Big 12 Player of the Week. Against the Cardinals, Collier pulled down 19 boards and added 20 points to lead the Lady Longhorns in both categories. This marked her second double-double of the week after scoring 10 and grabbing 16 rebounds against Ohio Bobcats on Wednesday. It was quite a week for Charli Collier with 30 points and 37 rebounds combined to help lead Texas to two wins.

Freshman guard Celeste Taylor continued her solid first season in Austin this week. She led all Longhorns in scoring against Ohio with 17 points. In that game Taylor was everywhere adding nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and three blocks. It was an all-around game for Taylor. Against Stanford she added another 10 points, two rebounds and two steals.

Thanks to both of these ladies, the Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team finished the week with two wins and helped them improve their record to 7-4. With recent wins over Tennessee and Stanford, Texas is now ranked number 25 in the nation.

The Alabama Crimson Tide has had a rough end to the 2019 college football regular season after losing two games in November, being left out of the college football playoff and now being left out of the AP All-American First Team.

The First Team is riddled with SEC talent from schools all across the conference such as LSU, Georgia, Kentucky, Auburn and South Carolina.

Some notable SEC names that made the First Team roster:

LSU:

  • Joe Burrow, Quarterback
  • Ja’Marr Chase, Wide Receiver
  • Derek Stingley, Cornerback

Kentucky:

  • Lynn Bowden Jr., All-Purpose Player
  • Max Duffy, Punter

Auburn:

  • Derrick Brown, Defensive Tackle

South Carolina:

While Alabama did not have any names appear on the First Team roster, they did have some show up on the Second and Third Team:

Second Team:

  • Jedrick Wills Jr., Offensive Tackle
  • DeVonta Smith, Wide Receiver
  • Jaylen Waddle, All-Purpose Player

Third Team:

  • Trevon Diggs, Cornerback
  • Xavier McKinney, Safety
