UFC 293 results: Tyson Pedro breaks out sword celebration after bludgeoning knockout of Anton Turkalj

At UFC 293, Tyson Pedro kicked off the main card with a bang: a scintillating knockout of Anton Turkalj and a cold celebration.

[autotag]Tyson Pedro[/autotag] made quick work of [autotag]Anton Turkalj[/autotag] en route to victory Saturday at UFC 293.

In a light heavyweight bout that opened up the main card at Qudos Arena in Sydney, Pedro (10-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) knocked out Turkalj (8-3 MMA, 0-3 UFC) with the stoppage coming at 2:12 of Round 1.

Once he got going, it seemed like Pedro couldn’t miss – particularly with his right hand. A combination knocked Turkalj off balance, but “The Pleasure Man” remained upright. After a few more combinations, a Pedro right hand put Turkalj down. A wicked hammerfist followed and turned Turkalj’s lights out.

With the victory, Pedro bounces back into the win column after a February unanimous decision loss to Modestas Bukauskas. He has now won three of his most recent four. In defeat, Turkalj has now lost three consecutive bouts to start his UFC tenure.

Tyson Pedro seeks ‘extreme violence,’ bonus-winning finish of Anton Turkalj at UFC 293

Tyson Pedro has had a long training camp and plans on showing off his work at UFC 293.

SYDNEY – [autotag]Tyson Pedro[/autotag] has had a long training camp and plans on showing off his work at UFC 293.

Pedro (9-4 MMA, 5-4 UFC) faces [autotag]Anton Turkalj[/autotag] (8-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) in a light heavyweight bout Saturday. He will look to rebound from his unanimous decision loss to Modestas Bukauskas at UFC 284, which snapped his two-fight winning streak.

Pedro elected to be away from his family for this training camp, which he spent with UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and others at City Kickboxing in New Zealand. Alongside Adesanya, Pedro is also excited to share the card with his good friend Tai Tuivasa, who faces Alexander Volkov in the night’s co-headliner.

Pedro talked about that and more at Wednesday’s UFC 293 media day in Sydney.

Check out the full interview in the video above. UFC 293 takes place Saturday at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPNews and ESPN+.

Vitor Petrino wasn’t affected by Anton Turkalj’s trash talk prior to UFC Fight Night 221 win

Vitor Petrino brushed off Anton Turkalj’s antics leading up to UFC Fight Night 221.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Vitor Petrino[/autotag] brushed off [autotag]Anton Turkalj[/autotag]’s antics leading up to UFC Fight Night 221.

Turkalj (8-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) called Petrino easy money and faked him out in their weigh-ins faceoff. However, Turkalj wasn’t able to back up his actions, losing a Fight of the Night battle to Petrino (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) this past Saturday at The Theater at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas.

But the undefeated Brazilian finisher, whose main goal is to put on a show, says he was unaffected by the build-up during the fight.

“Talk is cheap,” Petrino said through an interpreter at the post-fight news conference. “Even a parrot can talk, so whatever he says outside the cage, the moment the door closes, he’s going to have to back everything, and I’m happy with how it went. He did what he had to do. It didn’t really make a difference.”

[lawrence-related id=2623370,2624524,2624355]

He continued, “It was just a very childish game, but once the door closes, there’s no way around it. He’s going to have to back whatever he’s putting outside. He’s going to have to back it in the cage, and we saw how that went.”

The UFC stays in Las Vegas this week with a heated bantamweight rivalry atop the card.

UFC Fight Night 221 takes place Saturday at The Theater at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, former bantamweight champion [autotag]Petr Yan[/autotag] (16-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC) takes on [autotag]Merab Dvalishvili[/autotag] (15-4 MMA, 8-2 UFC). Yan is a -260 favorite at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Dvalishvili is +210. But it’s not a blowout. Our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have Yan ahead by the smallest possible margin at 6-5.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Alexandr Romanov[/autotag] (16-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) meets [autotag]Alexander Volkov[/autotag] (35-10 MMA, 9-4 UFC) at heavyweight. Romanov is a slight favorite at -150, but he has a big 8-3 lead in the picks.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Nikita Krylov[/autotag] (29-9 MMA, 10-7 UFC) takes on [autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] (21-7 MMA, 7-2 UFC) in a fight rescheduled from two weeks ago when Krylov fell ill on fight day at UFC Fight Night 220. Krylov and Spann were set to headline that card. Krylov is a -170 favorite in the light heavyweight rebooted bout, but it’s Spann with a 7-4 picks lead.

[autotag]Austin Lingo[/autotag] (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) and [autotag]Ricardo Ramos[/autotag] (16-4 MMA, 7-3 UFC) are set to tangle at featherweight. Ramos is the biggest favorite on the main card at -370 and he has a big 8-3 lead from our staff members.

[autotag]Said Nurmagomedov[/autotag] (17-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC) is a -270 favorite against [autotag]Jonathan Martinez[/autotag] (17-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC) at bantamweight and is one of our two 11-0 unanimous picks on the main card.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Vitor Petrino[/autotag] (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and [autotag]Anton Turkalj[/autotag] (8-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) have pick’em odds in their light heavyweight matchup. Despite that, Petrino is our second unanimous pick.

In the MMA Junkie consensus picks, Yan (56 percent), Romanov (53 percent), Spann (59 percent), Ramos (75 percent), Nurmagomedov (84 percent) and Petrino 71 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Anton Turkalj says Vitor Petrino is ‘easy money’ before UFC Fight Night 221

Like his opponent Vitor Petrino, Anton Turkalj doesn’t expect their matchup to go the distance at UFC Fight Night 221.

LAS VEGAS – Like his opponent [autotag]Vitor Petrino[/autotag], [autotag]Anton Turkalj[/autotag] doesn’t expect their matchup to go the distance.

Turkalj (8-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) takes on Petrino (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) in Saturday’s main card opener at The Theater at Virgin Hotels. The card streams on ESPN+.

After dropping his promotional debut in a short-notice fight against Jailton Almeida at UFC 279, Turkalj is moving back down to light heavyweight to take on fellow finisher Petrino. But Turkalj doesn’t only expect a finish because of their styles. He also doesn’t think Petrino has the cardio for a 15-minute battle.

“I saw him, and I felt like he’s gonna be a good matchup for me,” Turkalj told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 221 media day. “So, easy money.”

[lawrence-related id=2622816,2622833,2622617]

He continued, “I don’t think he has the conditioning to go three rounds. He’s like a muscular guy, good looking, but it doesn’t matter how good you look. This is MMA.”

Watch the video of Turkalj’s complete pre-fight media availability above.

LAS VEGAS – The UFC’s busy schedule continues Saturday with UFC Fight Night 221, which takes place at the The Theater at Virgin Hotels and streams on ESPN+.

Before fight night arrives, though, the 12 athletes from the main card are scheduled to speak to reporters Wednesday at media day, and MMA Junkie will have a live stream beginning at 3 p.m. ET/noon PT.
