Biggest theme of Penn State’s 2024 class: balance

Penn State’s 2024 class offers one of the more balanced recruiting hauls in the country.

With the first and busiest day of the college football early signing period behind us, we can confirm that Penn State signed all 25 of its Class of 2024 commits earlier today. It was a “drama-free” signing day according to [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] who spoke after all the commits had signed. The class is now locked in for next year so let’s break it down.

Penn State returns a boatload of starting-caliber players from last season but will lose several starters to the NFL with more expected to announce in the coming month. Penn State has never been a heavy transfer portal school and relies mainly on keeping its returning players intact while reloading with a strong freshman class.

This years’ class is ranked 14th in the country by 247Sports Composite and 16th by On3. With 12 offensive commits and 13 defensive commits this year’s group is evenly balanced eluding to the fact that Franklin and his staff want to add quality depth around the board and fill in any neccessary holes from departing players.

From a positon standpoint is was more of the same type of balance across the board:

  • 7 skill players: QB [autotag]Ethan Grunkemeyer[/autotag], running backs [autotag]Quintin Martin[/autotag] and [autotag]Corey Smith[/autotag], wide recievers [autotag]Josiah Brown[/autotag], [autotag]Tyseer Denmark[/autotag], and [autotag]Peter Gonzalez[/autotag], tight end [autotag]Luke Reynolds[/autotag]
  • 5 offensive lineman: [autotag]Eagan Boyer[/autotag], [autotag]Caleb Brewer[/autotag], [autotag]Cooper Cousins[/autotag], [autotag]Donovan Harbour[/autotag], [autotag]Garrett Sexton[/autotag]
  • 6 defensive lineman: [autotag]Liam Andrews[/autotag], [autotag]DeAndre Cook[/autotag], [autotag]T.A. Cunningham[/autotag], [autotag]Xavier Gilliam[/autotag], [autotag]Jaylen Harvey[/autotag], and [autotag]Mylachi Williams[/autotag]
  • 5 secondary players: cornerbacks Antoine Belgrave-Shorter, Kenneth Woseley, Jon Mitchell, and safties Dejuan Lane, and Vaboue Toure
  • 2 linebackers: Kari Jackson and Anthony Specca

No one position or side of the ball dominated the 2024 recruiting cycle for Penn State, but thats a good thing because it shows that Penn State has talent everywhere. Three wide recievers were added to arguably the worst room in 2023 and a playmaking running back was added to a room featuring two former 5-star recruits. The trenches were reloaded with talent and many of the offensive line commits should challenge for starting spots in their first year.

In the time of the transfer portal and NIL perhaps a early signing day like the one Penn State had today is not exciting, but it does not matter Franklin’s method of “underpromise, overdeliver” method still produces wins. It has in the past. Penn State’s 2024 class is balanced, solid, and most importantly adds talent across the board which is key for sustained success.

The early signing period for college football is officially open as schools around the country are locking in their entire, if not the vast majority, of their recruiting classes for the Class of 2024. Penn State will be among the schools expecting to receive signed National Letters of Intent from their verbal commitments to make things official. There could always be a player or two who hold off until the traditional signing period in February for one reason or another, but Penn State is hoping for a pretty simple and straightforward opening to the early signing period.

Here is a look at each player who committed to Penn State in the Class of 2024 recruiting calendar and an update on which players have signed in the early signing period.

Penn State’s 2024 football commitment tracker

An updated look at Penn State’s Class of 2024 following its most recent commitment.

Penn State pulled in a terrific Class of 2022 and got started with its Class of 2023 with some nice additions. But the work is already underway for the Class of 2024. Penn State received its first commitment to the Class of 2024 in January 2022 with some help on the offensive line in the commitment of in-state offensive tackle Cooper Cousins.

We’ll keep track of every commitment to Penn State’s Class of 2024 with this updated commitment tracker. Of course, this being the world of college football recruiting, there are bound to be some decommitments and twists and turns along the way, but we’ll keep track of those as well should they arise.

This tracker will be updated as necessary, with the most recent update being made on April 29, 2023.

Penn State’s Class of 2024 ranking boosted with latest four-star commitment

Penn State trending upward in updated Class of 2024 recruiting rankings after the latest major commitment.

Penn State may have gotten off to a relatively slower start in putting together its Class of 2024 foundation, but the Nittany Lions are rocking and rolling in mid-April. With its most recent commitment of the top player in Pennsylvania, running back Quinton Martin, Penn State’s national recruiting ranking continues to be trending upward.

Penn State’s current Class of 2024 team ranking falls in the top 10 in the nation according to 247Sports and Rivals. The updated class rankings using 247Sports’ composite rankings have Penn State at ninth overall. Rivals ranks Penn State a couple of spots higher at seventh overall.

On3 ranks Penn State slightly outside its top 10. According to the updated On3 team rankings, Penn State is ranked 12th in the nation.

No matter which recruiting outlet’s rankings you want to go by, Penn State is still putting together another high-quality recruiting class in 2024 the way things are going. But it is also worth noting Penn State still has the third-best recruiting class among Big Ten teams on each class ranking.

Michigan and Ohio State are each ranked ahead of Penn State in the various Class of 2024 rankings. The Wolverines have the highest-ranked class in the Big Ten according to 247Sports and Rivals, but Ohio State comes out ahead of the Big Ten schools with On3’s rankings.

Penn State’s addition of a commitment from Martin on Friday evening gives Penn State its top recruiting target in the Class of 2024, at least within the state of Pennsylvania. Martin is the top-rated recruit in Pennsylvania across all recruiting outlets, and he is considered a top 100 player by most of those outlets as well. Martin is the sixth four-star player in the current recruiting class according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Martin is also the fourth player ranked in the top 10 in Pennsylvania to commit to Penn State. He joins offensive lineman [autotag]Cooper Cousins[/autotag], linebacker [autotag]Anthony Specca[/autotag], and cornerback [autotag]Kenneth Woseley[/autotag]. Offensive tackle Kevin Haywood, of Royersford, is a possible future commit for Penn State as well, which would be another top 10 player in the state to join the Nittany Lions. Only two players in the top 10 of Pennsylvania have committed elsewhere with wide receiver Tyseer Denmark (Oregon) and offensive lineman Peter Jones (Notre Dame) opting to go elsewhere.

Ex-Florida State wide receiver transfers to Penn State

Penn State stabilizes wide receiver outlook with former Florida State receiver transfer Malik McClain

For the second time in the past week, Penn State has added a wide receiver to the program from the transfer portal. Former Florida State wide receiver [autotag]Malik McClain[/autotag] has reportedly enrolled in classes at Penn State and committing to the Nittany Lions. McClain has yet to announce the commitment on his Twitter profile, but he has updated his profile image on the social media account.

McClain played in all 13 games for Florida State during the 2022 season and caught 17 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns. He caught 16 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns in 2021.

McClain is a former four-star recruit of Florida State’s Class of 2021 from IMG Academy, a program Penn state is certainly no stranger to. At the time of his recruitment out of high school, McClain was the no. 38 receiver in the nation.

McClain’s transfer commitment is paired with the recent addition of [autotag]Dante Cephas[/autotag] from Kent State. Together, Cephas and McClain will help to fill the veteran void left by the departures of [autotag]Parker Washington[/autotag] and [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag], who are both off to the NFL this spring. They should each help to take the pressure off the leading returning receiver, [autotag]Keandre Lambert-Smith[/autotag], who is coming off a terrific performance in the Rose Bowl.

McClain will also help to give the offense an experienced target, along with Cephas, as [autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag] steps in to lead the offense at quarterback in 2023. Allar is already having some Heisman hype surrounding him entering the new season. Having a receiver like McClain should help that cause.

This news also comes a day after Penn State added its second commitment in the Class of 2024 with the addition of four-star linebacker [autotag]Anthony Specca[/autotag]. So it’s been a pretty decent week for head coach James Franklin.

Of course, the transfer portal has a way of breaking even sometimes. Also on Wednesday, Penn State wide receiver [autotag]Jaden Dottin[/autotag] announced he was entering the transfer portal.

Linebacker-U! Penn State gets four-star commitment in Class of 2024

Penn State’s newest commitment for the Class of 2024 is in

Just days after a major recruiting weekend for Penn State, the Nittany Lions have successfully landed a four-star linebacker right from within the state of Pennsylvania. [autotag]Anthony Specca[/autotag], of Pittsburgh, gave his verbal commitment to Penn State on Tuesday to become the newest member of Penn State’s next recruiting class for 2024.

Specca announced his commitment on Twitter with words of thanks to his high school coaches and family.

Specca is rated as a four-star recruit by ESPN and Rivals but just three stars by 247Sports and On3. However, On3 and 247Sports both have consensus recruiting rankings that calculate Specca to be a four-star recruit using their respective metrics. The bottom line is Penn State knew they wanted to keep Specca from leaving the state and, at this point at least, they have managed to do so.

Specca is coming off a junior season for Central Catholic in Pittsburgh in which he recorded 122 tackles with 19 TFL and six sacks with three forced fumbles, and an interception.

Specca had been considered a Penn State lean for a while leading up to this past weekend’s junior day event. Coming out of the junior day at Penn State, predictions began flowing in suggesting Specca had decided on Penn State once and for all. Specca committed to Penn State over offers from Tennessee, Florida State, Texas A&M, and more. Specca had made many unofficial visits to Penn State during his recruiting process though, and the Nittany Lions were always considered a favorite in the process.

According to the 247Sports player rankings, Specca is the ninth-ranked player in the state of Pennsylvania. He joins offensive lineman [autotag]Cooper Cousins[/autotag] as now of two top-10 players in the state to commit to Penn State, and [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] is hoping for a few more along the way. Specca is the top linebacker in the state
