Anthony Hill Jr. and Colton Vasek are worth monitoring closely after recent events.

The Texas Longhorns had a great Saturday, and a great Saturday could spill over into a great week. Continue reading “Texas Football: Could Anthony Hill and Colton Vasek be on flip watch?”

Arch Manning helping Texas Longhorns recruit two 5-star defenders

Manning has been helping in that department, as well

The Texas Longhorns are deadly serious about putting together a strong recruiting class of 2023. Texas has already secured commitments from several of the nation’s top high school football players. That list includes consensus No. 1 quarterback Arch Manning, the centerpiece of Steve Sarkisian’s efforts. Manning committed to playing for Texas back in June – following a recruiting splurge that cost the school $280,000 in one weekend alone.

That investment has paid off in several ways, including helping to draw other top athletes from around the country. Manning has been helping in that department as well.

According to Andrew Miller at Hookem Headlines, Manning is actively trying to recruit two five-star defenders for Texas:

Venice (Fla.) EDGE Damon Wilson

Wilson (6-foot-4, 230 pounds) is an explosive and well-coordinated pass rusher. He’s currently ranked No. 5 among edge defenders in his class and No. 8 in the state of Florida. Last year as a Junior, he posted 15 sacks, 25 hurries and 23 tackles for a loss. He has not made a commitment yet but has 29 offers and serious interest from several major programs, including Georgia and Miami. His most recent visit was to Ohio State on September 3.

Ryan (Texas) LB Anthony Hill

Hill (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) is an athletic and physical sideline-to-sideline defender with enough potential to eventually play in the NFL. He’s ranked as the top linebacker in his class and No. 17 overall. Last season he totaled 131 tackles, including 93 solo tackles and 18 for a loss. Hill committed to playing for Texas A&M only a few days ago. However, Texas is hoping to pry him away. He also has offers from 31 other schools, including Alabama.

Speaking of the Crimson Tide, they’re the only team ranked higher in the 2023 recruiting class over Texas.

Johntay Cook still recruiting five-star LB Anthony Hill to Texas

Johntay Cook is still working to get Anthony Hill to Texas.

Five-star linebacker Anthony Hill is among the best defensive players in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

The Texas A&M commit is listed as the No. 1 linebacker in the nation and the No. 3 player in the state of Texas according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Even though Hill is verbally locked in with A&M, Texas wide receiver commit Johntay Cook is not giving up his pursuit. Cook went to Twitter to remind Hill a flip to Texas is still an option on the table.

Texas A&M is coming off an embarrassing home loss to Appaclan State over the weekend while Texas put up a strong performance against No. 1 Alabama.

Hill is too talented of a player to give up on in the recruiting trail. Expect Texas to continue its push for the superstar linebacker up until national signing day.

Texas currently sits at No. 2 in the overall team recruiting rankings for the 2023 cycle. The Longhorns have three five-stars committed to its class led by Arch Manning, Derek Williams and Johntay Cook.

2023 5-Star Texas A&M commit Anthony Hill named to Butkus Preseason High School Watch List

2023 5-Star Texas A&M commit Anthony Hill named to Butkus Preseason High School Watch List

The Texas A&M 2023 recruiting class is still a work in progress, although that doesn’t mean that haven’t already secured some of the top-ranked players in the class, with the No.1 ranked linebacker prospect Anthony Hill leading the way on that front. Last month, the Butkus Preseason College Watch List nominations came out, featuring a long list of the most talented and accomplished linebackers in the college ranks, leading to this month’s release of the Butkus Preseason High School Watch List, which included the stellar linebacker and Denton, Texas native, Anthony Hill.

The Butkus Award, founded in 1985, recognizes linebackers at the High School, College, and NFL levels, while supporting causes important to the Butkus family. The Butkus Foundation has presented high school and professional awards since 2008. The selection committee is composed of a 51-member expert panel of coaches, scouts, and journalists who are in charge of the award selection process.

Hill is one of the 51 nominees for the prestigious award, competing against a wealth of talent and production, with a bulk of the listed players nominated receiving multiple scholarships to division 1 programs. Hill committed to the Aggies on July 30th, which ultimately led to top 2023 safety prospect Dalton Brooks committing that same night.

Anthony Hill is coming off of an extraordinary junior season at Denton Ryan, recording 131 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 8 sacks, 3 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, 2 interceptions, and 1 interception returned for a touchdown.

How recent recruiting losses impact Steve Sarkisian’s two-year strategy

Recent losses on the recruiting trail may open up the recruiting strategy to changes.

Texas has had a very strong run on the recruiting trail for the 2023 class, but had significant losses in recent weeks.

Anthony Hill and Colton Vasek were among what I would call my eight biggest potential recruiting whiffs last week. It appears the two elite prospects are taking their talents to College Station and Norman, respectively.

The losses are significant because of Texas’ struggle to get competent linebacker play and consistent pressure from its pass rush. The Longhorns will continue their 13-year search for an elite pass rush.

Steve Sarkisian gave a glimpse into a potential shift in recruiting philosophy, letting offensive lineman TJ Shanahan and safety Mikal Harrison-Pilot know they are among the Longhorns’ top priorities. Though the class is nearly full on the offensive line and at receiver, Texas may be pushing edge rush recruiting to next season’s top priority.

Derion Gullette is a must-get for this class after Vasek and Braylan Shelby head in different directions. However, the odds are not great for bringing in other edge rushers this year.

In the meantime, Bo Davis and company will need to develop their strong defensive line haul from last season, in addition to talented South Oak Cliff edge prospect Billy Walton.

Top 2023 Linebacker Anthony Hill commits to Texas A&M!

Pool Party Magic? LET’S RIDE

Texas A&M has just received the news that priority 2023 defensive prospect, 5-Star Linebacker Anthony Hill has committed to Texas A&M! In late June, Hill released his Final Two school list, which included Texas A&M and Texas, as the in-state rivals knew that battling for the ultra-talented prospect would not be easy, as both have been in close contention within the last month. With Hill attending the annual recruiting pool party today, it didn’t take too long for the future superstar to ultimately make his final decision, choosing the Aggies early this afternoon.

Anthony Hill is heading into his senior season at Ryan High School in Denton, Texas, and is coming off of a 2021 season where he accumulated 131 tackles, 8 sacks, 18 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, and 3 pass breakups, Hill isn’t slowing down one bit. Now commited, Hill can narrow his focus on having his best season yet, and solidifying himself as not only the most dominant linebacker in the 2023 class, but perhaps the best overall player in the country.

In a scouting summary provided by On3, Hill’s unique skill set displayed during his high school playing career is described in detail:

Downhill linebacker with good size and straight-line speed. Has starred for one of the top defenses in Texas high school football since his sophomore season. Combines his speed with a high effort level, resulting in a highly productive player at the high school level. At his best when he can use his closing speed as a blitzer or in pursuit sideline-to-sideline. Shows some physicality as a striker. Has one of the longer wing-spans of top linebackers in the 2023 cycle. Provides added value as a pass rusher and may eventually grow into an EDGE prospect down the line. Has a penchant for forcing turnovers and looks to strip the football often. Will need to continue improving his skills playing in space and in coverage.

Texas A&M has begun to finally heat up on the recruiting trail, and the commitment of Anthony Hill could just be the start of one of the most monumental recruiting weekends we’ve witnessed in Texas A&M history.

Five-star LB Anthony Hill commits to Texas A&M

A huge loss for the Longhorns on the recruiting trail.

Massive news on the college football recruiting front: Five-star linebacker Anthony Hill committed to Texas A&M over in-state rival Texas.

The Denton Ryan star is listed as the No. 1 linebacker in the nation and the No. 2 overall prospect in the Lone Star State for the 2023 cycle according to the updated 247Sports composite.

Jimbo Fisher and his staff got Hill to campus over the weekend and close the deal on the all-state linebacker. This is a huge head-to-head recruiting victory over the Longhorns, who will have to look elsewhere at the linebacker spot.

Do not expect the Texas staff to give on Hill. He is the type of talent you keep recruiting all the way until signing day. The Longhorns were able to flip a few high profile targets in last year’s class.
