Angela Hill goes off on ‘bullsh*t’ UFC rankings: They ‘have always disrespected me’

Angela Hill goes off on ‘bullsh*t’ UFC rankings ahead of her return against Mackenzie Dern at UFC Fight Night 224.

LAS VEGAS – Despite fighting someone in the top 10, [autotag]Angela Hill[/autotag] won’t bank on entering the UFC official rankings if victorious in her return.

The UFC strawweight veteran and former Invicta FC champion has lost faith in the UFC’s official system to rank the top 15 fighters in each respective weight class. Hill (15-12 MMA, 10-12 UFC), who fights Mackenzie Dern in Saturday’s main event of UFC Fight Night 224 at the UFC Apex, is keeping her expectations low when it comes to potentially getting ranked in the promotion.

“The rankings are bullsh*t,” Hill told reporters at Wednesday’s media day. “The rankings have always disrespected me. Every time one of you guys say, ‘Oh, you’re going to be in the rankings. Oh, you’re going to be in the top 10. Oh, you’re going to be in the top 15 after this fight.’ It doesn’t happen.

“If anything, if I fight someone who has a number by their name, they don’t have a number by their name after I beat them. So I’m not expecting much from the rankings.”

Hill enters Saturday’s UFC event on a two-fight winning streak, having beaten Lupita Godinez and Emily Ducote in unanimous decisions in 2022. She now faces easily the most decorated female grappler on the UFC roster with Dern (12-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) and she’s very much looking foward to the challenge.

“There’s a lot I can do with the way she comes forward, with the way she doesn’t care about her chin being thrown in the air,” Hill explained. “There’s a lot of areas I feel I can capitalize on, and I don’t feel she has as many opportunities to capitalize on my mistakes.

I’ve just been working really hard at fixing them, and I don’t feel like she’s been fixing hers. She’s just been trying to do more jiu-jitsu. So if anything, fight IQ wise and my experience in there and being put up against tough grapplers my entire career has prepared me for this.”

UFC free fight: Angela Hill puts on striking clinic against Emily Ducote to win dominant decision

Watch Angela Hill’s most recent performance ahead of her return this Saturday against Mackenzie Dern.

[autotag]Angela Hill[/autotag] reminded everyone in her last outing why she’s a forced to be reckoned with.

The former Invicta FC champion put on a striking clinic against Emily Ducote at UFC on ESPN 42 in December. It was a clean and dominant win for Hill, who won 30–27 across all three judges’ scorecard. Hill is known for her striking, but she showed new wrinkles and renewed fire in the performance.

You can watch Hill’s impressive win over Ducote in the video above.

Hill is set to return to the cage on Saturday in the main event of UFC Fight Night 224. She takes on Mackenzie Dern in a strawweight matchup. The card goes down at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streams on ESPN+.

Hill (15-12 MMA, 10-12 UFC) is coming off back-to-back wins over Ducote and Loopy Godinez. This two-fight winning streak snapped a 1-5 rut for Hill from 2020-2022.

Dern (12-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC), meanwhile, looks to bounce back from a majority decision loss to Yan Xiaonan from in October. She’s currently 1-2 in her past three fights, a stretch that put a halt to a four-fight winning streak.

Mackenzie Dern plans to revisit jiu-jitsu roots for Angela Hill: ‘I need to finish it’

Mackenzie Dern wants to go back to her bread and butter in her upcoming UFC women’s strawweight fight against Angela Hill.

COSTA MESA, Calif. – [autotag]Mackenzie Dern[/autotag] wants to go back to her bread and butter against [autotag]Angela Hill[/autotag].

Dern (12-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) will look to rebound when she faces Hill (15-12 MMA, 10-12 UFC) at a UFC Fight Night event May 13.

An ADCC and no-gi world champion in jiu-jitsu, Dern has earned seven-career wins by submission. Although she had success getting her opponents down in her two recent losses, she failed to finish them, and that bothers her.

“As Mackenzie the jiu-jitsu world champion, if I’m on the ground, I should be submitting any of the girls,” Dern told MMA Junkie. “So in that way, I’m always going to push myself. That’s why I’m training so much jiu-jitsu just to keep – jiu-jitsu is always my last priority, a little bit, because I was trying to get my striking up to where it needs to be, my takedowns, all these things.

“But now, I’m just like, ‘OK, I’m getting it to the ground now, but I need to finish it.’ I only have five minutes to get to the ground, to submit, and we still have punches and all these things. So I need to be on point with my jiu-jitsu.”

[lawrence-related id=2586191,413983]

Stylistically, Hill is a favorable matchup for Dern on paper. But Dern acknowledged Hill has grown exponentially as a fighter and has a lot more experience than her.

“I felt like that about all the girls I fought, so I learned not to underestimate any of them – because really all they need is decent defense, maybe use the cage,” Dern said. “Angela has a lot of cage experience. So that’s definitely something that gets me like, ‘Man, I can’t make a mistake with her.’ I’ve got to make sure that if I hit, I hit hard. If I’m moving, I’m moving good on my feet. If it’s on the ground, she doesn’t get up. And that’s it.”

Angela Hill wants March return vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz: ‘I’d love that fight’

Angela Hill calls out former UFC title challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz for March in London following her win at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 42.

[autotag]Angela Hill[/autotag] is fresh off a victory, and she already has a return in mind.

The former Invicta FC champion is coming off a dominant decision win over Emily Ducote (12-7 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 42 in Orlando, Fla. Hill (15-12 MMA, 10-12 UFC), who’s now on a two-fight winning streak, is looking to keep the momentum going and book a return against fellow veteran Karolina Kowalkiewicz.

“Yes, Karolina: Come at me, bro,” Hill told reporters at the UFC on ESPN 42 post-fight press conference (via MMA Fighting). “Let’s go. I’d love to fight Karolina. I seem to be getting all of my girl Jessica Penne’s opponents, so I’d be happy to take that one, too.”

[lawrence-related id=2602324,2602334]

As far as a date for the return, Hill said she would like to compete at a UFC event in March in London. The UFC has not yet made a London 2023 event official, but if that’s in the cards, that would be ideal for Hill.

“London card … London card in March,” Hill said. “I know she’s coming off a win. Yeah, I’d love that fight.”

Hill now has back-to-back wins over Lupita Godinez and Ducote. Prior to the two-fight wining streak, Hill was on a three-fight skid.

Kowalkiewicz, a former UFC title challenger, also is coming off two straight wins. She defeated Felice Herrig and Ducote in decisions in her most recent outings.
