The Morning After: Bill Belichick doing what he hates most, creating distractions

Where do things stand for the Patriots a day after their Monday night meltdown?

The Morning (afternoon) after a blowout loss on national tv at home is not always fun. The New England Patriots looked frankly outmatched and outcoached against an inferior team in the Chicago Bears. But then again, that is the beauty of football.

Anyone can win.

The Patriots fell to 3-4 and have yet to have any consistency on the season in either direction. Mac Jones was benched early after a rough start returning from his four-week absence. Bailey Zappe looked good at first, but then things started to quickly unravel.

And one of the league’s worst rushing defenses beat one of the league’s best rushing offenses, allowing just 71 rushing yards, with 24 of those yards coming from Jones before he left the game.

Matt Judon had hilarious reference to Jordan Poole and Draymond Green practice fight

Matt Judon had a hilarious reference to the Golden State Warriors’ practice fight

It’s always interesting when the NFL and other sports leagues collide, particularly when big news happens.

There was an altercation between Golden State Warriors power forward Draymond Green and shooting guard Jordan Poole during an NBA practice on Wednesday. Green actually threw a punch and dropped Poole after a verbal spat on the court, as shown in a video that was obtained by TMZ.

Flip it to the football side of things, and members of the New England Patriots were play-fighting on Friday after practice. Linebackers Anfernee Jennings and Josh Uche jokingly sparred in the locker room.

That’s when fellow linebacker Matt Judon had this hilarious response to the wrestling, as noted by WEEI’s Khari Thompson.

“Anfernee Jennings and Josh Uche were just mock wrestling and Matthew Judon walks past and says, ‘Which one of y’all Jordan Pool?'”

The entire team will have the task of wrestling a victory away from the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. ET.

This linebacker could be the missing piece in New England

Should the Patriots consider making a splash at linebacker before the trade deadline? Patriots Wire’s Cam Garrity thinks so.

The New England Patriots are off to a less than ideal 1-3 start, and they have a glaring hole on the defensive side of the ball.

The team has struggled to find anyone opposite of Matthew Judon since Kyle Van Noy’s departure, and they desperately need another outside linebacker to help in blitz packages, coverage and in the run. Not to mention, Judon is an elite defender when he has his health, but due to the lack of substitutes or players to take off the pressure, he’s asked to do too much at times

And quite frankly, he isn’t at the stage of his career where he can handle heavy snap loads. Keeping Judon fresh keeps him effective.

The plan has always been for some young defender to take over opposite him. Anfernee Jennings had a great camp, and Josh Uche looked like he could be fully unlocked after showing promise early. But through four games, neither has managed to make the desired impact. If the Patriots wish to make the playoffs this year, the defense could really use a playmaker. Luckily for them, there is one disgruntled linebacker who could be available ahead of the trade deadline.

That player is none other than Roquan Smith of the Chicago Bears.

Smith has been adamant about his desire to be traded or paid what he deserves, and the Bears are in a rebuilding/retooling mode where they don’t have much to put around their young QB. Smith is the Bears’ best asset on the team, and he could demand a ransom. But as the Bears struggle through 2022 with Smith’s pending unrestricted free agency looming, they will possibly lower the price to send him to a team willing to roll the dice on him staying long-term.

Either they do this by November 1st or use a $19 million franchise tag next season on him, which would be beneficial for both sides. But Smith wouldn’t be able to be tagged again in the following season, meaning the team paid a high bill for a rental on a bottom of the barrel team and would fail to get anything in return as other teams would rather wait for his tag to expire.

The Patriots need to add some playmakers that fit the current team’s timeline. With Mac Jones on a rookie deal, it only makes sense to make these franchise-altering moves to add the next generation’s superstar to the defense with Devin McCourty and Judon both getting older.

The Patriots could wind up offering Chicago a package centering on two first-round picks (2023 and 2025) and a future second-rounder. Smith is projected to warrant a hefty contract and could be upwards of $115 million with $60 million guaranteed. It’s a lot of money for many, but for one of the league’s best tacklers and versatile weapons, it would surely be worth it, especially for a Bill Belichick-lead defense. If anyone could unlock another gear out of Smith, it would be Belichick.

The Patriots would add a 26-year-old linebacker opposite of Judon, who would take the pressure off of others in the run game and would feast on the opposite edge. As we get closer to the November 1st deadline, the price will certainly go down for picks, and the Patriots could strike a deadline deal for the superstar and start building their defense around Smith, Christian Barmore, Kyle Dugger and Jack Jones for the future.

Patriots release inactives, 3 players set to make regular season debuts

Patriots release list of inactives with multiple players set to make their regular season debut against the Steelers.

Many of the same names popped up for a second straight week on the New England Patriots’ inactive list, ahead of Sunday’s road meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After falling completely flat in the opener against the Miami Dolphins, the Patriots are hoping to bounce back by playing spoiler to the Steelers’ first home game of the season.

They’ll have to do so without defensive lineman Sam Roberts, offensive lineman Chasen Hines, backup quarterback Bailey Zappe and defensive back Marcus Jones—all of whom are listed as inactives heading into Week 2. Keep in mind, defensive back Joshuah Bledsoe was already ruled out ahead of the team’s road trip to Pittsburgh on Saturday.

That means Patriots safety Adrian Phillips (ribs) will play with the team after suffering an injury against the Dolphins in Week 1.

Rookie running back Pierre Strong Jr. is also set to make his official NFL debut as a third option behind Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson. Second-year cornerback Shaun Wade will be on the field for the first time this season as well.

The team will also have outside linebacker Anfernee Jennings, who was surprisingly a healthy scratch in the opener.

Instant analysis of Patriots’ 23-21 preseason home loss to Giants

The Patriots fall short in the preseason opener against the Giants.

The New England Patriots might not have a true offensive coordinator, but they certainly have a true gunslinger in Bailey Zappe, who nearly engineered a comeback victory in Thursday’s preseason loss to the New York Giants.

With less than five minutes left in the game and the Patriots down by six, the rookie quarterback stood in the line of fire from incoming blitzers and heaved up a soft touchdown pass to receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey.

It was one of many throws Zappe put in the air with full faith in his receivers to go up and get it. There wasn’t an iota of hesitance shown by the fourth-round pick out of Western Kentucky.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, the defense wilted in the end by giving up a 69-yard drive that ended with a 24-yard field goal kick by Graham Gano that iced the game.

There were definitely some positives to take away for the Patriots, including the linebacker speed they were able to show off on defense. Mack Wilson, who came to the team in a trade with the Cleveland Browns for Chase Winovich, was constantly flying around the field and putting himself in position to make plays.

Josh Uche and Anfernee Jennings found their way into the offensive backfield often as well. Granted, it would be nice to see the team actually finish with more sacks, even though they were able to generate a lot of pressure early. Uche came away with the lone sack on the night.

The Patriots’ young receivers also stepped up in the game. Rookie wideout Tyquan Thornton flashed some of that ridiculous speed we’ve seen in training camp, and Tre Nixon had a strong second half after dropping a wide open pass in the first half that would have led to a third-down conversion.

But this was Kristian Wilkerson’s game.

The third-year receiver was arguably the team’s best offensive performer on a night where he hauled in eight receptions for 99 yards.

The good news is the Patriots won’t have long to reflect on the loss. It’s on to the Carolina Panthers next week for a couple of planned joint practices and the second preseason game on August 19.

5 takeaways from Patriots’ annual in-stadium practice

5 takeaways from the Patriots’ in-stadium practice.

The New England Patriots were back on the practice field on Friday night for their annual in-stadium practice at Gillette Stadium.

There was a great fan turnout on a night where the team put on the pads and went through the entire pregame process. This practice typically serves as somewhat of a dress rehearsal, but things initially looked to be a bit more amped up in the early-going.

Players split up for a Team Blue vs. Team White matchup. Matt Patricia was calling the offensive plays for Team Blue with Mac Jones at quarterback, while Team White was left to Joe Judge and rookie Bailey Zappe.

It was the final practice of the week with the team slated to be off for the weekend before returning to prepare for Thursday night’s preseason opener against the New York Giants.

Here are five takeaways from the team’s in-stadium practice.

Jonnu Smith, Josh Uche and Nick Folk among Patriots back at practice

The Patriots have key players back at practice on Monday, including much-needed depth in special teams.

The New England Patriots had good news on Monday morning with the return of six essential players.

Jonnu Smith, Josh Uche, Nick Folk, Joe Cardona, Anfernee Jennings and Lawrence Guy all made their returns to the field. Smith sustained an ankle injury at practice that wasn’t expected to be major. Uche left the Patriots’ second preseason game early with an injury, but the extent of it wasn’t disclosed.

Following Quinn Nordin’s shaky performance against the Philadelphia Eagles, the return of Folk becomes much more significant. The Patriots need consistency, as Bill Belichick constantly says, and Folk hit 40 of his last 45 field goal attempts.

Cam Newton wasn’t at practice because of a misunderstanding about COVID-19 protocols.

Newton, along with a laundry list of other players weren’t present at practice.

Gilmore is the biggest name on this list and Belichick discussed the cornerback’s status — while focusing on his injury and not the contract situation. The Patriots have less than a month to figure out Gilmore’s contract situation and get the injured players ready for the season opener.

Patriots’ 53-man roster projection: Predicting two trades and the impact of preseason

Here’s a look at the New England Patriots’ roster projection ahead of the start of preseason.

You thought Bill Belichick’s aggressive offseason was over? Well, what if he has one more kick of life in him? What if he decides to spin some trades on the final day of roster cuts, when he’ll pare down to 53?

The Patriots’ weaknesses are starting to show themselves. Really, they just have one weakness if Stephon Gilmore doesn’t return from injury: it’s cornerback. The departure of Jason McCourty appears to have really hurt the depth in the secondary.

And then there’s the issue of N’Keal Harry’s trade request.

So let’s address those two items of interest while taking a swing at how the preseason will influence a few players on the roster bubble.

Patriots Week 17 inactives: C David Andrews, RG Shaq Mason, LB Terez Hall out

The Patriots are losing some much-needed depth on the offensive line.

The New England Patriots will be without two starting offensive linemen in their Week 17 matchup against the New York Jets.

New England is 6-9 and looking for a win to cap off the season. That task will be much more difficult with center David Andrews (calf) and right guard Shaq Mason (foot) out of the mix. Anfernee Jennings, Terez Hall, Brian Hoyer, D’Angelo Ross and Dee Virgin will also miss the contest.

Running back Damien Harris was placed on the injured reserve list with an ankle injury and he’ll miss the remainder of his second season in the league. The Patriots are extremely slim at running back, with Sony Michel and and James White as the primary options.

Jerod Mayo gives insight into inconsistent playing time for rookie LBs

Jerod Mayo has an explanation for a lack of rookie linebacker playing time,

In what is a year of rebuilding for the New England Patriots, there have been some questions surrounding the lack of playing time for the Patriots rookie linebackers. Earlier this week, Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo  offered some explanation as to why the rookies have not seen more playing time.

Ja’Whaun Bentley was inactive for Monday’s contest with the New York Jets. That left only Josh Uche, Anfernee Jennings, and Cassh Maluia on the 53-man roster for the game. The rookies played a little bit more in certain roles on Monday , and that could serve as a springboard. Mayo indicated that linebackers could see more playing time sooner rather than later.

“This past week, Josh had more of a third-down role for us,” ex-Patriots linebacker and current inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo said Friday. “He has great quickness to rush the passer and things like that. And then Anfernee had more of an early-down role. So, kind of splitting up those roles and really concentrating on a role instead of having those guys out there down after down after down after down, especially at this point in the season.

“So, we’re midway through the season now and hopefully those guys can take on a little bit more. But we’ll have to see.”

With the Patriots set to face a tough Baltimore Ravens team on Sunday, these rookies could figure into the equation quite a bit. With the running talents of quarterback Lamar Jackson, they could have their work cut out for them.
