Colts place TE Andrew Ogletree on IR

The Colts placed TE Andrew Ogletree on IR.

The Indianapolis Colts placed tight end Andrew Ogletree on the injured reserve list, the team announced Thursday.

This move comes as no surprise after it was revealed Ogletree tore his ACL during Wednesday’s joint training camp practice with the Detroit Lions.

We knew Ogletree would miss the rest of the season because of the severity of the injury, but it’s official now that he was placed on the injured reserve list before the final cuts are made Aug. 30.

The sixth-round pick from the 2022 NFL draft will now focus on recovery while the Colts turn their attention to cutting the roster down to 53 players.

Colts’ Andrew Ogletree speaks after torn ACL

Andrew Ogletree posted to Twitter following his season-ending injury.

Indianapolis Colts rookie tight end Andrew Ogletree appeared to be on his way toward carving out a role on the depth chart but will miss the entirety of the season after tearing his ACL during joint training camp practice Wednesday.

Ogletree, who went down in a non-contact fashion, got the news Wednesday night that he suffered a torn ACL. He took to Twitter to give a small statement following the news.

Ogletree was one of the stars of training camp through the first three weeks and had a touchdown reception called back due to a penalty in the preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills.

Ogletree was on his way to solidifying a role in the tight end room, but now they may carry just three tight ends with Mo Alie-Cox, Kylen Granson and fellow draft pick Jelani Woods.

Ogletree will have a long road ahead of him, but he’ll be gearing up to make another strong impression this time next year.

Colts’ Andrew Ogletree tears ACL, out for season

Andrew Ogletree has a torn ACL.

Indianapolis Colts tight end Andrew Ogletree suffered a torn ACL during Wednesday’s joint training camp practice with the Detroit Lions.

Ogletree’s injury happened in a non-contact fashion, and head coach Frank Reich told the media following practice that “it didn’t look good,” and that the injury was likely significant.

It’s official, now. Ogletree, a sixth-round pick, will miss the remainder of his rookie season with a torn ACL.

Ogletree had been one of the stars of training camp and was climbing the depth chart in the tight end room. He was on the way to securing a roster spot, but this injury will end his season.

With Ogletree out of the picture for his rookie season, the Colts are likely to lean more on Mo Alie-Cox, Kylen Granson and third-round pick Jelani Woods.

Colts’ Andrew Ogletree may have significant knee injury

Colts’ rookie TE Andrew Ogletree may have a significant knee injury.

Indianapolis Colts rookie tight end Andrew Ogletree may have suffered a signficant knee injury during joint training camp practice Wednesday with the Detroit Lions.

The sixth-round pick, who has been one of the biggest stars of camp, went down early in practice with a non-contact knee injury. He had to get helped off the field, and it was clear he couldn’t put a lot of weight on his right leg.

Head coach Frank Reich said after practice that the injury didn’t look good and while they will get an MRI, it appears to be a significant injury.

We shouldn’t jump to conclusions when it comes to the injury until more information is given following the MRI results, but the Colts may be down a tight end if the injury is significant.

9 Colts to watch vs. Bills in preseason opener

Here are nine players to watch in the Colts’ preseason opener.

The Indianapolis Colts kick off the preseason with a matchup against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday afternoon at Highmark Stadium.

As the Colts prepare to get their starting units ready for Week 1 of the regular season, they will be doing so against a Bills team that isn’t expected to play starting quarterback Josh Allen.

That doesn’t mean much to the Colts, who have several players looking to come hot out of the gates during the preseason opener.

Here are nine Colts players to watch in the preseason opener against the Bills:

Colts’ Andrew Ogletree moving up the depth chart?

Andrew Ogletree saw reps with the first-team offense Thursday.

Through the first two weeks of training camp, Indianapolis Colts tight end Andrew Ogletree has made a strong impression on his coaches and teammates.

Selected in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft, Ogletree appeared to be more of an intriguing project behind Mo Alie-Cox, Kylen Granson and third-round pick Jelani Woods.

While Ogletree didn’t receive the same amount of buzz as Woods following the draft, he has quickly made an impression on the coaching staff. So much so that Ogletree saw reps with the first-team offense during Thursday’s training camp practice.

Offensive coordiantor Marcus Brady told the media Thursday that Ogletree has earned that right, along with monitoring Alie-Cox’s reps.

“It’s just kind of the rotation but he is moving up. I mean you can see he’s making play after play,” Brady said. “Part of it is monitoring Mo Alie-Cox’s reps a little bit as you saw he got banged up on that first day. He’s fine. So, just kind of rotating the guys, seeing what they can do.”

The Colts raved about Ogletree ever since they selected him in the sixth round. In fact, they said they had their eyes on him for two years before finally drafting him in 2022.

An extremely athletic tight end, Ogletree has the physical profile to thrive as a Y tight end in the Colts offense. While Alie-Cox and Woods share the same position and unique athleticism, it has been Ogletree making headlines.

Even though Alie-Cox is going into his first year as a starter, he has taken on the role of a mentor for the younger players in the room. Ogletree has taken advantage of that opportunity every step of the way.

And though he’s competing for snaps with a fellow rookie in Woods, it’s all about making each other better.

“Staying in the film room, learning from the vets, especially from Mo (Alie-Cox). He’s going on his fifth or sixth year now,” Ogletree said. “I am grateful I have a veteran like that and also to have a fellow rookie that was drafted with me,  so nice competition. We’re roommates. I consider him my best friend on the team. Every time we go get lunch or every time we come back to the hotel, we’re always just chilling and talking it up.”

The Colts tight end room has the potential to be a lethal unit if it all comes together. The sheer size and athleticism oozing from the room are quite frankly insane. Every player in that room is a mismatch athletically.

For Ogletree, who comes in needing to make an impression, he’s just focusing on taking it one day at a time.

“Yeah, it definitely boosts my confidence. Just coming in day in and day out, doing my job. If you make a play, you make a play, but just trying to work on your fundamentals and technique throughout everything,” Ogletree said. “That’s what it’s all about here. Everybody is the best of the best, and it comes down to footwork – all your fundamentals and everything like that. So, just really trying to hone in on those skills.”

6 takeaways from Day 6 of Colts training camp

Here are 6 takeaways from Day 6 of Colts camp.

The Indianapolis Colts held their sixth practice of training camp on Thursday at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield.

Wearing full pads for the second time since training camp opened, the Colts have been taking their next steps toward preparing for the preseason opener, which is a week from Saturday.

We also put together a quick roundup of the practice Thursday before getting into the takeaways.

Here are six takeaways from Day 6 of Colts training camp:

Colts’ 2022 training camp preview: Tight Ends

The TE room is now being led by Mo Alie-Cox. Here’s our training camp preview of the position.

The Indianapolis Colts are just a few weeks away from returning to Westfield where fans will get to watch a tight end group compete for roles during training camp and the preseason.

This offseason featured the retirement of veteran Jack Doyle, who was one of the longest-tenured players on the roster in 2021. Despite still having one more year left on his contract, Doyle decided it was time to ride off into the sunset.

This expedited the process of the Colts needing to find his replacement. They re-signed Mo Alie-Cox to a three-year deal and picked up two more intriguing options during the 2022 NFL draft.

Be sure to check out the other position previews ahead of training camp:

With training camp set to begin July 26, here’s a look at our preview of the position:

6 toughest cuts from our latest Colts’ roster projection

Here were the toughest cuts from our latest Colts’ roster projection.

Though the Indianapolis Colts don’t report to Westfield for training camp for another month, it’s still not a bad idea to take a look at the roster and how things might shake out when cuts come along.

There are plenty of questions that still have yet to be answered, and most of them won’t be answered until training camp and the preseason games are concluded at the end of August.

But as we projected the 53-man roster following the conclusion of minicamp, we have an idea about how the roster might break down. We did so at each position in our latest projection.

Here, we are going to take a look at the toughest cuts from that roster projection and why those players didn’t make the cut:

Colts’ 2022 draft picks get their jersey numbers

The 2022 draft class has its jersey numbers.

The Indianapolis Colts have assigned jersey numbers to all eight members of the 2022 NFL draft class.

While these numbers aren’t guaranteed to be the same by the time the regular season rolls around, we at least get a starting point for these rookies as rookie minicamp begins Friday.

Here’s a look at the jersey numbers for the Colts’ draft picks:

  • WR Alec Pierce — No. 14
  • TE Jelani Woods — No. 80
  • OT Bernhard Raimann — No. 79
  • S Nick Cross — No. 20
  • DT Eric Johnson II — No. 93
  • TE Andrew Ogletree — No. 85
  • DT Curtis Brooks — No. 97
  • DB Rodney Thomas II — No. 25

We will see what the future holds for these numbers, but they all seem pretty strong to begin their careers with.
