Paul Craig drops down to middleweight, meets Andre Muniz at UFC London

Paul Craig has decided to give middleweight a try and will make his divisional debut at UFC London.

[autotag]Paul Craig[/autotag] has decided to give middleweight a try.

After undergoing a successful test cut to 185 pounds, former light heavyweight contender Craig (16-6-1 MMA, 8-6-1 UFC) will move down a division to face [autotag]Andre Muniz[/autotag] (23-5 MMA, 5-1 UFC) on July 22 at The O2 in London, promotion officials announced Thursday morning. The matchup was first reported by Super Lutas.

Craig’s decision comes after dropping back-to-back fights to Volkan Oezdemir and Johnny Walker. Prior to that, the 35-year-old Scottish fighter was unbeaten in six fights, including a finish of current light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill.

“We had this idea of going to middleweight, not because light heavyweight is done, but just the way light heavyweight is sitting at the moment, there’s not a lot of fights above me who I’m going to get to fight,” Craig said in a recent episode of his “Leather’d Podcast.”

Muniz saw his nine-fight winning streak snapped by Brendan Allen in his past outing, which headlined UFC Fight Night 220 in February. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace’s run included wins over Ronaldo Souza and Uriah Hall.

With the addition, here is the updated UFC London card on July 22:

  • Tom Aspinall vs. Marcin Tybura
  • Molly McCann vs. Julija Stoliarenko
  • Yanal Ashmouz vs. Chris Duncan
  • Jai Herbert vs. Fares Ziam
  • Davey Grant vs. Daniel Marcos

Albert Duraev wants Andre Muniz after UFC on ESPN 43 victory: ‘I’m going to win’

Following his UFC on ESPN 43 win, Albert Duraev revealed he has jiu-jitsu ace Andre Muniz on his mind as a next opponent.

SAN ANTONIO – [autotag]Albert Duraev[/autotag] already has his sights set on a potential next opponent.

Minutes after his UFC on ESPN 43 win over Chidi Njokuani on Saturday, Duraev (16-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC) told MMA Junkie in a post-fight news conference he hopes to get matched against Brazilian middleweight and jiu-jitsu specialist [autotag]Andre Muniz[/autotag] (23-5 MMA, 5-1 UFC).

“I want my next fight in June or July,” Duraev said. “I want to fight Brazilian guy Andre Muniz. He’s held 15 ranking. I want a top 15. I can show a good fight.”

Muniz, 33, does not currently have a fight scheduled and currently sits at No. 13 in the promotion’s official rankings. Muniz tore through the ranks of the UFC middleweight division until he was submitted by Brendan Allen on Feb. 25. He has 19 finishes in 23 victories including 15 submissions.

Some fans may look at the fight as jiu-jitsu vs. wrestling, but Duraev reminded it’s an MMA fight. He plans to bring all disciplines to the table.

“It’s striking if (I) need,” Duraev said. “I can (use) wrestling, jiu-jitsu, sambo. I’m going to win.”

Duraev, 34, returned into the win column when he Chidi Njokuani (22-9 MMA, 2-2 UFC) by split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28). Prior to that, Duraev lost by TKO to Joaquin Buckley in June 2022.

UFC Fight Night 220 results: Brendan Allen taps Andre Muniz in impromptu main event

Brendan Allen finished BJJ ace Andre Muniz on the mat in the final round of UFC Fight Night 220’s impromptu main event.

[autotag]Brendan Allen[/autotag] wasn’t originally scheduled to participate in the main event, but he left a lasting impression on fight fans to close the show.

After Nikita Krylov became ill with a foodborne illness Saturday and could not compete against Ryan Spann in the scheduled marquee fight, the middleweight bout between Allen (21-5 MMA, 9-2 UFC) and Andre Muniz became the new main event of UFC Fight Night 220 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

It became a big stage for Allen to make a statement in the three-round main event, and he did exactly that by tapping Muniz (23-5 MMA, 5-1 UFC) at 4:25 of the final round.

The fight began at a measured pace as both fighters studied the range. Soon single punches and kicks were traded, with Allen getting the better of the early offerings. A nice combination of punches from Allen got Muniz’s attention, but a moment later a spinning back kick to the body scored for the Brazilian, sparking heated exchanges throughout the remainder of the round.

Allen kept the pressure high in the second, firing combinations first as he controlled the center of the cage. Muniz looked to mix things up with grappling, but his takedown was reversed and ended up on his back. Allen landed a few strikes while maintaining top position until the horn.

At the beginning of the third, the fighters hugged in the center of the cage before getting to the final five minutes of action.

Muniz put together some sharp punches in the early half of the round. With about two minutes remaining, Allen caught a kick to the body and lifted Muniz up for a big slam to the mat. A moment later, Allen took the back slapped on a rear-naked choke. It took a couple of adjustments, but Allen was able to get his arm under the neck to force a tap for an impressive finish.

Allen, 27, has now won four straight and had no shortage of names that he wants to face next. He mentioned the likes of Sean Strickland, Chris Curtis, Jack Hermansson and Dricus Du Plessis as potential opponents.

“I’m trying to fight everybody in this witch,” Allen said during his post-fight interview.

Muniz, 33, sees his impressive nine-fight winning streak come to an end. The Dana White’s Contender Series veteran won his first five UFC bouts, including three first-round submissions.
