‘Trying to make a play’: Cowboys come to teammate’s defense after costly blocked punt mistake

From @ToddBrock24f7: The mishandling of a blocked punt decided the outcome of Week 14’s game, but Amani Oruwariye’s teammates don’t want it to define him.

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy put it bluntly during his postgame press conference Monday night.

“This one stings.”

But the most painful part is, this particular bug has bitten Cowboys fans before.

Amani Oruwariye’s mishandling of a blocked punt gave the ball back to the Bengals with under two minutes to play in a tie game. Instead of the offense trying to better navigate for a walk-off winning field goal, the defense ended up allowing Cincinnati to score the deciding touchdown just a few snaps later.

It was a gut-wrenching turn of events for the Cowboys, now 5-8, that left the locker room “really devastated,” according to owner Jerry Jones.

“That mistake we made at the end was very impactful, is all I can say.”

Jones hinted in his traditional tunnel Q&A session that the coaching staff had a block-attempt called on the fateful fourth-down play, but McCarthy explained otherwise.

“We actually had a return called,” McCarthy told media members. “The tackle released, the guard went down. The B-gap was exposed. Nick [Vigil, linebacker] took it, and we were able to get the block.”

It was a fortuitous moment, until the deflected ball went beyond the line of scrimmage. Left alone, it would have been whistled dead. Dallas would have taken over, already within the range of kicker Brandon Aubrey.

Instead, Oruwariye, the cornerback who had just re-joined the active roster a few hours earlier, tried to reel in the bouncing ball. When he was unable to, the ball became live again, and the Bengals recovered for a fresh set of downs without having to advance it past the original line to gain.

McCarthy said Oruwariye was simply taken by surprise when the ball ended up in front of him, and the six-year veteran didn’t hear the Cowboys sideline- all the way across the field and 50 yards away- yelling the “poison” command that signals to leave the ball alone.

“He understands the rule of crossing, once the ball crosses the line,” the coach explained after the 27-20 loss. “His response when he turned, when he heard the crowd: the ball was there, and he reacted to it.”

“That’s a play that happens not very often,” McCarthy said. “Definitely a tough learning opportunity.”

Cowboys fans, however, were able to immediately recall two other occasions where the same set of circumstances cost them dearly.

The most infamous was Leon Lett’s botched recovery of a blocked field goal versus Miami on Thanksgiving 1993. After the batted kick skittered around on the snow-covered Texas Stadium turf and past the line of scrimmage, Lett tried to pounce on it and slipped. The Dolphins regained possession and kicked a game-winning field goal on the next snap.

More recently, Nahshon Wright muffed a blocked punt after it, too, crossed the line of scrimmage, in a 2021 game against Denver. Down 16-0 at the time, Wright was trying to turn the tide of the game with a return for a touchdown. Instead, the demoralized Cowboys got further manhandled and lost by a 30-16 final.

This felt like déjà vu all over again.

But while the play ultimately decided the outcome of the Week 14 game, Oruwariye’s teammates refuse to let the moment to define him.

Micah Parsons was visibly distraught in the aftermath of Oruwariye’s flub. Other Cowboys players struggled to explain what had happened. McCarthy and Jones were clearly disappointed. Special teams coordinator John Fassel will undoubtedly be grilled about it the next time he takes the podium.

Several of Oruwariye’s teammates came to his defense, though, even with the heartbreaking loss still raw and fresh.

Longtime Cowboys special teams ace C.J. Goodwin was there for Wright’s gaffe three years ago and even shielded the rookie from reporters afterward. He did the same thing for Oruwariye after Monday night’s loss.

“Y’all think it’s football … but there’s life outside of football,” Goodwin said, per the team website. “When I see my man going through something mentally, I’m not going to have [the media] bringing up the play over and over. We’re not going to do that.”

Cornerback Jourdan Lewis also tried to put the mishap- merely the latest in a series of bad breaks that have defined the Cowboys’ 2024 season- into a larger perspective.

“Big plays happen, and everybody sees it,” Lewis said. “We have to stay with [Oruwariye] and keep encouraging him. We don’t want that moment to define him. We have to stay behind him. That’s just football. Some things roll your way, and some things don’t. I can’t blame him trying to make a play.”

Cowboys work out All-Pro cornerback, former 2nd-round pick, plus make practice squad additions

The cowboys worked out All Pro cornerback Xavien Howard and also sign two cornerbacks to practice squad. | From @ArmyChiefW3

Roster churning is a year-round mission, and the Dallas Cowboys are no strangers to the need in 2024. On Wednesday, they opened the door for a possible union with an All-Pro.

Cornerback Xavien Howard, formerly of the Miami Dolphins, worked out for the Cowboys at The Star in Frisco. Clearly, Dallas has an interest in the four-time Pro Bowl player who has yet to play in 2024, but the 31-year old veteran left without coming to an agreement.

Clearly having a need for depth at the position, Dallas made three additional roster moves to lesser fanfare. First, they activated CB Amani Oruwariye’s 21-day practice window. The young veteran was placed on the Reserved/Injured list after he suffered a back injury against San Francisco.

The Cowboys also signed cornerbacks Dee Delaney and Troy Pride, Jr. to fill the vacancies on their practice squad.

Pride was a 2020 fourth-round pick with Carolina with eight career starts. Delaney is a five-year veteran appearing in 52 games mainly with in Tampa Bay. Delaney is a 2018 UDFA who has played for Jacksonville, the Jets, the Dolphins, Washington and the Buffalo Bills before this.

Miami drafted Howard in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft where he picked off eight passes in his first two seasons. In year three, he recorded 10 interceptions en route to All-Pro honors.

That led to the Dolphins signing him to a five-year $75.25 million deal in 2019 with $39 million in total guarantees. Four years later, Miami would double down and give him a five-year $90 million extension after leading the league in interceptions twice.

Howard played eight seasons in Miami before being released prior to the start of the new league year as a June 1 cut.

Cowboys CB shuffle: DaRon Bland activated, Trevon Diggs sits out practice, backup goes to IR

From @ToddBrock24f7: Bland is no lock to play this Sunday; the team had to activate him today or end his season. Amani Oruwariye moves to IR with a back injury.

DaRon Bland is back on the Cowboys’ active roster, a signal that the third-year cornerback is growing tantalizingly close to making his 2024 regular-season debut.

Just in time, too. The team also placed fellow corner Amani Ouwariye on injured reserve after a back injury sustained last Sunday night against the San Francisco 49ers.

Bland has been out since suffering a stress fracture of the foot during training camp and started the season on IR. The former fifth-round draft pick and defending league leader in interceptions had surgery just prior to the team’s Week 1 season opener in Cleveland; he was given a six-to-eight-week recovery estimate at the time.

Even though it was now been nine weeks, Bland is still no lock to play Sunday when the Cowboys travel to Atlanta to face the Falcons.

His 21-day practice window was opened on Oct. 9, meaning the team had until the end of business to move him to either the active roster or season-ending injured reserve.

Bland was slated to spend the day’s practice working with the rehab group, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

“We’re not going to put him out there until he’s ready to go,” McCarthy told reporters during his Wednesday press conference.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

The Cowboys will need someone ready to go at cornerback in very short order, though. Veteran Trevon Diggs did not practice Wednesday with what is being classified as a calf issue, and thanks to a shoulder injury, rookie Caelen Carson hasn’t played since Week 3’s loss to Baltimore.

And now Oruwariye has been shelved as well.

The onetime Detroit Lion and Jacksonville Jaguar, signed to the Cowboys just days after Bland’s foot procedure, made his first appearance for Dallas in Week 4 and logged an interception for the club in that Thursday night’s 20-15 win.

The 28-year-old Penn State product played almost every defensive snap over the Cowboys’ next two games against Detroit and Pittsburgh. Late in the third quarter of Sunday’s contest, he appeared to take a knee in the back during a block from 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk.

Oruwariye will have to miss at least four games before he may return to action. He will be lost until Thanksgiving, at the earliest.

The Cowboys currently have just four interceptions on the year. This week, they’ll go up against a Falcons offense that ranks third in the NFL in passing yards.

Cowboys elevate former Lions starting CB for Week 6 matchup

Cowboys elevate former Lions starting CB Amani Oruwariye for Week 6 matchup

The Dallas Cowboys are battling rampant injury issues across their defense. To help bolster their depth, Dallas has turned to a former Lions starter in the secondary.

In advance of Sunday afternoon’s game in Dallas, the Cowboys elevated cornerback Amani Oruwariye from their practice squad to the active lineup against the Lions. He’ll take the spot of regular starter DaRon Bland, who was not activated from the injured reserve for the game.

Oruwariye spent his first four seasons in Detroit, starting 36 games for the Lions after being a fifth-round pick out of Penn State in 2019. He picked off six passes in the 2021 season but couldn’t ever recapture that magic. Since leaving the Liona after the 2022 season, Oruwariye has bounced between the Giants, Jaguars and now Cowboys.

This will be the third time Oruwariye has been elevated, which means if the Cowboys want to use him again after Week 6, they’ll need to sign him to the active roster. He did intercept a pass in Dallas’ earlier win over the Giants.

Dallas also elevated LB Darius Harris from the practice squad.

Cowboys 55-man, Week 3 roster elevations vs Giants shows cornerback is dire issue

The Dallas Cowboys need a win in the worst way on Thursday night, and their secondary appears to be a mash unit entering the contest. Faced with taking on top rookie WR Malik Nabers, the Cowboys will more than likely be down Caelen Carson, who is a gametime decision with a bum shoulder. Carson was listed as doubtful on the final injury report for this week and on Thursday Dallas elevated a practice squad cornerback, just in case.

Amani Oruwariye will see his first game-day active status for the Dallas Cowboys as one of two elevations for Week 4’s contest against the New York Giants. DE Carl Lawson will be the other, bringing the Cowboys’ roster to 55 players temporarily. About an hour and a half before kickoff, the team will announce their seven inactives, a list likely to include both Carson and safety Markquese Bell, as well as QB Trey Lance who will be the emergency third quarterback. As for everyone else? Here’s a look at the full 55-man roster Mike McCarthy and his staff will choose from.

Cowboys elevate intriguing CB for Giants clash, hinting at Caelen Carson’s status

From @ToddBrock24f7: Amani Oruwariye was a star at Penn State and logged 9 picks in 4 seasons with Detroit. Caelen Carson is doubtful for Dallas on Thursday.

The Giants will be without multiple key defensive backs for Thursday night’s showdown with the Cowboys.

It turns out Dallas will also have to take a piecemeal approach with their own secondary.

The Cowboys have elevated cornerback Amani Oruwariye from the practice squad for the Week 4 contest. That’s a strong signal that rookie Caelen Carson, who was listed as doubtful on Wednesday’s practice report with a shoulder injury, will likely have to sit.

https://twitter.com/VoiceOfTheStar/status/1839351391598645515

Summer signee Andrew Booth is officially listed on the Cowboys depth chart as Carson’s backup, but fourth-year defensive back Israel Mukuamu is also expected to see extra reps alongside Trevon Diggs and Jourdan Lewis at corner.

This will mark Oruwariye’s first gameday elevation since joining the Cowboys less than a month ago. If he gets onto the field, though, it’ll be far from his first rodeo.

Originally a fifth-round draft pick of the Lions in 2019, Oruwariye had been a star DB at Penn State and a college teammate of linebacker Micah Parsons for one season. He played four seasons for Detroit, starting 36 games and collecting nine interceptions, two fumble recoveries, 173 total tackles, and four tackles for loss over that time.

https://twitter.com/lionsplayaday/status/1837509406365295025

The 28-year-old Florida native signed a deal- with the Giants, coincidentally- early last year but did not make it off Big Blue’s practice squad and was subsequently released in October. The Jaguars picked him up a few days later, and he made one game appearance for them in late 2023. He remained with Jacksonville on a futures contract over this past offseason; Oruwariye was cut by the Jags on Aug. 27.

Defensive end Carl Lawson was also elevated for the Week 4 clash; it’s his second of three possible promotions to the active roster.

Jaguars announce 14 players signed to reserve/future contracts

The Jaguars made the addition of 14 players official Tuesday.

A day after the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 2023 season ended, the team signed 11 players to reserve/future deals, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

More than a month later, the team has finally announced those signings along with a trio of other players. One of those three is kicker Riley Patterson, whose reunion with the Jaguars popped up on the transaction wire a week ago. The other two, tight end Josh Pederson and receiver Seth Williams, spent the 2023 season with Jacksonville.

Reserve/future deals, typically a minimum-salary contract, don’t count against the team’s salary cap or roster limit until the beginning of the next league year. Essentially that means those type of contracts are a way to keep players while roster limits haven’t yet been expanded back to a maximum of 90 players, which will happen when the new league year begins in March.

The notable omission from the list is running back Snoop Conner, who was picked by the Jaguars in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft. Here’s all 14 players who were officially added to the Jaguars’ roster Tuesday on reserve/futures contracts:

Jaguars sign CB Amani Oruwariye to practice squad, cut FB Derek Parish

The Jaguars added cornerback Amani Oruwariye, who made 36 starts in four seasons with the Lions.

The Jacksonville Jaguars added cornerback Amari Oruwariye to the practice squad Monday and parted with seventh-round rookie Derek Parish, the team announced.

Oruwariye, 27, was a fifth-round pick for the Detroit Lions in the 2019 NFL draft. In four seasons with the team, Oruwariye played in 53 games and made 36 starts, recording nine interceptions.

After his rookie contract expired, Oruwariye joined the New York Giants on a one-year deal in free agency, but was released by the team at the end of training camp. The Giants re-signed Oruwariye to the practice squad, but cut ties with the cornerback on Oct. 10.

The Jaguars have seen their depth at cornerback dwindle with Gregory Junior and Christian Braswell both landing on injured reserve. Starting cornerback Tyson Campbell suffered a hamstring injury in Week 6, but the team hasn’t yet provided an update on his status.

Parish, 24, was the last of 13 selections made by the Jaguars in the 2023 NFL draft. The collegiate pass rusher attempted to transition to fullback, but also saw preseason snaps and practice time with the Jacksonville defense before he was released Monday.

Giants restore Cole Beasley to practice squad, release two

The New York Giants have restored WR Cole Beasley to their practice squad, added a veteran OT and terminated the contracts of two others.

The New York Giants made a series of roster moves on Tuesday, beginning with wide receiver Cole Beasley being restored to the practice squad.

The Giants signed Beasley prior to the start of training camp and he appeared destined to make the 53-man roster before suffering a quad injury and being waived as a part of final cuts. He was quickly re-signed to the practice squad with an injured reserved designation.

Due to the designation, Beasley was ineligible to play for the first four weeks of the season.

In addition to Beasley, the Giants also signed veteran offensive tackle Yodny Cajuste to their practice squad.

The 27-year-old Cajuste was a third-round pick of the New England Patriots in the 2019 NFL draft. After four seasons playing under Bill Belichick, he signed with the New York Jets this past May but was waived/injured in early August. A week later, he was released with an injury settlement.

Now healthy, the 6-foot-5, 310-pound Cajuste provides the Giants with a much-needed swing tackle.

In order to clear room on their practice squad for Beasley and Cajuste, the Giants terminated the contracts of cornerback Amani Oruwariye and wide receiver Cam Sims.
