Notre Dame vs North Carolina: 3 Confidences & 3 Concerns

Through three weeks what do we know about Notre Dame? And what do they know about themselves?

Nothing comes easy. That’s the lesson rookie Notre Dame head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] is learning the hard way this September. From a competitive loss versus Ohio State, to the starting quarterback going down in a no show effort at home against Marshall, to a less than inspiring but at-least-it’s-a-win versus Cal, Notre Dame has had to fight for every inch of progress made early on in the Freeman era.

What Notre Dame team shows up to face North Carolina? Nobody knows, including Notre Dame.

While this may be unnerving to the Irish faithful, the truth is this team is struggling to find itself, its identity. Both now, and what they want it to be in the future. While ND nation sits in “wait and see” mode Saturday in Chapel Hill, I do think there is now enough body of work from Notre Dame that we can identify some key confidences and concerns to ponder leading into the game.

Watch: Notre Dame offensive skill player outlook for 2022

What position unit do you feel best about and worst about entering 2022? @alwaysirishinc & @nickshepkowski discuss Notre Dame’s offense at length. Check it out!

Notre Dame has the best tight end in college football entering 2022 with [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag].  The offense has several things to like certain things but in terms of overall units what are actual known commodities?

Quarterback brings excitement as the [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag] era is upon us but we’ve seen so little actual game action that what is to come is certainly an unknown.

The overall talent in the running back room continues to improve but replacing [autotag]Kyren Williams[/autotag] is easier said than done and an injury to [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag] in the spring game certainly isn’t a positive.  Is this the year [autotag]Chris Tyree[/autotag] breaks out?

The offensive line has some building blocks in [autotag]Joe Alt[/autotag] and [autotag]Blake Fisher[/autotag] it would appear but how much of a leap will the unit take versus a group that struggled mightily a season ago?

Wide receivers have very high potential but again, the lack of known commodities mixed with injuries to veterans doesn’t leave a good taste as we enter June.

I had an extended conversation with the Always Irish podcast last week and discussed over 90 minutes of Notre Dame football that will be shared over the coming days and next couple weeks.

The first section is all about the offensive outlook for 2022 and building into the recruiting outlook at each position as well.  Take a watch below, be sure to follow John of Always Irish on Twitter, and I’ll share more of our conversations as they’re released.

Notre Dame football: most optimism since when?

When is the last time you felt this good about Notre Dame’s longterm outlook? @AlwaysIrishINC welcomed @NickShepkowski on to discuss exactly that.

There is a different feel around the Notre Dame football program over the last few months, something that is undeniable to those who pay close attention.  That’s not to say things were by any means bad or poor before, but its certainly different right now and the buzz is palpable.

As good as things got under Brian Kelly compared to what they were under Bob Davie, Tyrone Willingham, and Charlie Weis, life as a Notre Dame football fan was pretty stinking good.  However, it has a real chance to get even better in the coming years under the Marcus Freeman regime.

I hopped on the Always Irish podcast to discuss the excitement surrounding the program and along with host John Kennedy, what was going to be a half hour or so discussion went on and on because there was just so much to cover and the optimism kept us talking.

Take a watch to the episode through the YouTube video below as everything from the new Notre Dame energy, Brian Kelly and the Notre Dame-LSU Cold War, Tyler Buchner’s expectations, 2022 thoughts and recruiting and Dante Moore were discussed.
