Transfer Profile: What to know about new Colorado RB Alton McCaskill

Here’s what you should know about Alton McCaskill

The Colorado Buffaloes have been on the lookout for dynamic playmakers since head coach Deion Sanders came in and they snagged a good one in Houston transfer RB Alton McCaskill.

Because of roster attrition, running back was a position of need for the Buffs and they have done a great job in remaking that room. McCaskill has a chance to grab the lead back spot through what will be a likely competition between 2022 holdover Anthony Hankerson, Kentucky transfer Kavosiey Smoke and true freshman Dylan Edwards.

Here are the five things you should know about Colorado football’s potential lead back for next season:

The quarterback position is set with all types of talent from Shedeur Sanders to Cam Rising and Heisman favorite Caleb Williams, not to mention a flurry of others.

The running back position is also loaded with talent, and the Colorado Buffaloes just got a big upgrade by adding Houston transfer Alton McCaskill.

Patrick Conn of College Sports Wire ranked the Pac-12’s starting running backs, and once again Oregon has the best one in the conference. This list can change drastically over the next few months, but here we are:

Take a look at what the #cubuffs are getting in Alton McCaskill

The Colorado Buffaloes made another splash in the transfer portal. This time, it’s Houston transfer RB Alton McCaskill. He took a visit to Boulder and left impressed and made the decision to join Deion Sanders’ Buffs.

McCaskill is a former three-star recruit who electrified in 2021, finishing with 961 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns while adding another 21 catches for 113 yards and two scores in the receiving game. He played in 14 games as a freshman but suffered a knee injury and missed the entire 2022 campaign.

McCaskill also had visits with Florida and Arizona State but is joining the Buffs’ suddenly crowded RB room that includes Kavosiey Smoke, Anthony Hankerson and Dylan Edwards, so Shedeur Sanders has a ton of options.

Here are some of McCaskill’s highlights from his time in Houston:

The #cubuffs added a playmaker to their offensive backfield

A successful visit to Boulder was all Alton McCaskill needed to give his full commitment to Colorado.

The Houston transfer running back flew in on Monday and one day later, he committed to the Buffaloes via Twitter. McCaskill, the 2021 AAC Rookie of the Year, was the highest-rated RB in the transfer portal.

Prior to missing last season due to an ACL injury, he rushed for 961 yards and had 18 total touchdowns in that stellar freshman season.

Colorado’s RB room now has some legitimate depth as McCaskill joins returners Dylan Edwards, Anthony Hankerson and Kentucky transfer Kavosiey Smoke. Plus, walk-on Charlie Offerdahl became a favorite of head coach Deion Sanders during spring ball.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Buffaloes also received a pledge from 2024 four-star athlete Aaron Butler.

Gators hosting elite transfer portal RB on official visit

Florida is hosting one of the top running backs in the transfer portal on an official visit this weekend.

One of the top running backs in the spring transfer portal is former Houston rusher [autotag]Alton McCaskill[/autotag]. The Florida Gators have shown interest in adding McCaskill recently and are hosting him on an official visit over the May 5 weekend, according to 247Sports.

McCaskill was the 2021 American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, but he missed all of 2022 with a torn ACL. With three years of college eligibility left, Florida is one of many Power Five teams looking at McCaskill.

The Gators boast one of the top running back rooms in the SEC, so McCaskill would be joining a crowded situation. Junior Montrell Johnson Jr. could be in his last year with the program before turning pro, but sophomore Trevor Etienne and true freshman Treyaun Webb present a clear line of succession for the lead spot in the backfield.

Florida also brought in Tulane transfer Cam Carroll during the winter portal period, but he’ll be out of eligibility after this year. Adding a near 1,000-yard rusher that scored 16 touchdowns as a freshman in the AAC can’t hurt the Gators, but McCaskill might look for a new home with more opportunity.

Getting McCaskill in town for a multi-day official visit is a positive sign, and plenty of players have signed with Napier’s Gators immediately after visiting the Swamp. California and Colorado are the other two programs that have shown a good amount of interest in him, according to 247Sports.

Notre Dame Offers ’21 Texas RB

The Irish go out to the Lone Star State and offer a running back in the 2021 class.

Although the Irish missed out on North Carolina star RB Will Shipley yesterday, there are still plenty of big fish out there  for Brian Kelly to reel in. You can add a new name to the pool of ‘backs the Irish are after in Texas’ Alton McCaskill.

The 6’1” and 195-pound tailback from Oak Ridge High School has recently seen his recruitment blow up. In April McCaskill added offers from Florida State, Arkansas, Penn State, Virginia, Auburn, Michigan, USC and others. It shouldn’t be seen as a coincidence that after McCaskill ran a 10.91 100-meter dash that the offers started to pour in.

Speed kills and McCaskill has plenty of it as his highlight reel shows. The burst is elite, he shows good hands out of the backfield and isn’t afraid to run between the tackles. McCaskill is ranked by the 247Sports composite as the 35th best back in the country and 515th overall prospect in the nation. His production last year is most likely why his rating is so low currently, just 845 yards on 121 carries (6.9 yards per carry) and 10 touchdowns.

I love this offer to McCaskill, getting players from talent rich states like Texas, California and Florida always seem to be ready to contribute earlier over other states players. The Irish staff need to go hard after running backs after missing out on Shipley and offering McCaskill is a step in the right direction.
