Date, time, and opponent are set for Auburn’s run in SEC Tournament

Auburn will enter this week’s tournament in Nashville as the No. 7 seed.

Now that the dust of the regular season has officially settled, it is now time for March to take full effect.

After finishing with a 10-8 record in SEC play, the Auburn Tigers officially finish as the No. 7 team in the conference and will open next week’s SEC Tournament against No. 10 Arkansas on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. CT. This year’s tournament will take place at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

Auburn and Arkansas each finished the season by facing the same three opponents: Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Arkansas was not able to earn a win in the tight three-game stretch, while Auburn went 1-2 with their lone win being a 79-70 win over the Volunteers in the regular season finale.

In their first meeting this season on Jan. 7, Auburn got revenge on the visiting Razorbacks by knocking them off, 72-59 at Neville Arena one year after Arkansas upset the then-No. 1 Tigers in Fayetteville.

[autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] led the team in points with 19, [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag] came off the bench to score 18 against his home-state team, and [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] ended the game with a 10-point, 10-rebound game. Arkansas’ Anthony Black scored 23 points in the game, but the Razorbacks’ 34% shooting was not enough to beat the Tigers.

Here’s a look at where each SEC team finished, and who their first-round opponent in the SEC Tournament will be:

Could Allen Flanigan and Jaylin Williams return to Auburn’s roster next season?

Both players went through senior day ceremonies on Saturday, but is there a chance that they could be doing the same thing next season?

Prior to Auburn’s 79-70 win over No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday afternoon, seven players took part in the annual “senior day” festivities as they prepared to play their final game at Neville Arena.

However, due to the extra season of eligibility that a majority of Auburn’s upperclassmen own, there is a possibility that two starters could grace next season’s roster.

[autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] have been mainstays in Auburn’s starting rotation all season long and were heavily influential in Auburn’s important win over Tennessee to close out the season by scoring 16 and 13 points respectively.

“Hopefully we can get both of them back,” Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl said of Flanigan and Williams after Saturday’s game.

Is there a true possibility of both players returning for next season? Neither has ruled out the possibility.

Ahead of Saturday’s game, both players were asked to share their thoughts on using their extra season of eligibility due to COVID next season.

“Right now, I’m focused on the season and finishing this thing out the right way. Once that comes to an end I will start thinking about the factors then,” Flanigan said Friday during Auburn’s scheduled media availability.

Williams responded by saying that he is focused on ending the season in a strong way.

“Yeah, I haven’t really been thinking about it much,” Williams said. “We have been struggling to win games like the last five weekends. I’m just trying to get on track with my teammates and figure out how we are going to win and play through March.”

Flanigan has played in all 31 of Auburn’s games this season, starting 16 of them. As for Williams, he has started in all 30 games that he has participated in. Other seniors that took part in senior day include [autotag]Zep Jasper[/autotag], [autotag]Chandler Leopard[/autotag], [autotag]Lior Berman[/autotag], [autotag]Babatunde Akingbola[/autotag], and [autotag]Jalen Harper[/autotag].

Tigers of the Game: Green, Williams conclude regular season with monster performances

Auburn got exactly what they needed out of Wendell Green Jr. and Jaylin Williams on Saturday.

After a poor shooting effort in their last meeting with Tennessee, the Auburn Tigers knew that a solid offensive output would be needed in order to defeat the visiting No. 14 Volunteers on Saturday.

Auburn did just that by improving their shooting to from 24% to 49% in the rematch which was instrumental in the 79-70 win.

Four Tigers contributed heavily to their team’s offensive success. [autotag]Wendell Green Jr[/autotag]., [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag], [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag], and [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] combined to score 70 of Auburn’s 79 points on Saturday and combined to make 52% of their shots.

Outside of shooting, those four were assets on the defensive side of the ball as well by pulling down 18 of the team’s 29 rebounds and blocking five shots.

With so many viable candidates, it was quite difficult selecting a Tiger of the Game.

Here’s a look at who Auburn Wire writers Taylor JonesJ.D. McCarthy, and River Wells, as well as Auburn fans, voted for as their Tiger of the Game following Auburn’s win over Alabama.

The Tigers picked up a win they had to have.

The Auburn Tigers picked up the win they had to have Saturday, taking down the No. 14 Tennessee Volunteers 79-70 in Neville Arena.

Auburn’s starters led the way with four of them finishing in double figures. The only exception was [autotag]Zep Jasper[/autotag] who played tenacious defense and did his part.

[autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] led all players with 24 points and was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line to help ice the game. [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] was just short of a double-double with 17 points and seven rebounds but added four blocks as he controlled the paint.

If it was their last game inside Neville Arena, [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag] both went out with a bang. Williams had 13 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists while Flanigan added 16 points.

Here are the top photos from Auburn’s win that fired up the Auburn fans and all but ensured the Tiger’s spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Twitter reacts to Auburn’s huge win over Tennessee

It’s safe to say that Auburn fans enjoyed beating Tennessee.

The Auburn Tigers can sleep a little easier.

Auburn (20-11, 10-8 SEC) has locked up its place in the NCAA Tournament after taking down No. 14 Tennessee 79-70 Saturday in Neville Arena.

The Tigers have struggled to close out wins this entire season but that was not the case this time and clutch defense was why. Tennessee did not make a basket over the final 6:13 as Auburn kept pulling further and further away to pick up the signature win of their season.

Four different Tigers scored in double figures with [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] leading the way with 24. [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] had 17 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks. While seniors [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag] added 13 and 16 points.

The big win fired up the Auburn fan base which took to Twitter to celebrate, here are the top reactions.

Bruce Pearl shares frustrations over his team being ‘smashed’ in viral postgame videos

Auburn has been on the losing end of foul trouble multiple times this season. Bruce Pearl is sick of it. His post-game rant was awesome.

Auburn basketball has been on the losing end of foul trouble several times this season, and head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] has had enough.

Following Wednesday’s 90-85 overtime loss to No. 2 Alabama, Pearl exhibited his frustrations with officiating in his postgame interview with Andy Burcham of the Auburn Sports Network.

“Very, very disappointing. You know, obviously, (Alabama) made some plays,” Pearl said Wednesday. “We had a hard time staying in front of them, at the end of the day. I’m just sick and tired of our guys getting smashed down there! Smashed!”

The Tigers were called for a season-high 29 fouls on Wednesday with [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag], [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag], and [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] all fouling out. Alabama went to the free-throw line 31 times, where they connected on 24 of those, as opposed to Auburn, who was fouled just 20 times and had 24 chances at the free-throw stripe.

“We were incredibly outmanned at the end. Three, four guys on the bench in foul trouble…Joke!” Pearl said before slamming the headset on the scorer’s table, causing an exciting reaction from Alabama fans who were celebrating the Crimson Tide’s SEC regular season title after the game.

Auburn’s foul discrepancy is nothing new. The Tigers have committed 20 or more fouls in 12 games this season, and have sent their opposition to the free-throw line to take 20 or more free throws 15 times, while five opponents have been sent to the line 30 or more times in five games.

The Tigers have one more SEC game to play before tournament time in hopes to improve their NCAA Tournament stock. Auburn plays No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. CT.

The two videos below are going to be making the rounds for years to come and show Auburn fans just how passionate Pearl is.

How Auburn’s loss to Alabama affects their KenPom ranking

Here’s a look at where Auburn stands in KenPom with one game remaining.

Auburn basketball needed a big win on Wednesday in order to pad their resume, and solidify a place in the NCAA Tournament, and was two-and-a-half minutes away from doing so.

Auburn led for 36:53 of game time on Wednesday at Alabama before Alabama’s Jahvon Quinerly connected to two free throws with 1:37 remaining to break a 73-73 tie. Auburn’s [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag] made a layup with 0:55 remaining to tie the game again and force overtime.

In the extra stanza, Alabama outscored Auburn, 15-10, to earn the 90-85 win.

“We needed that (win) to get into the NCAA (Tournament), and we didn’t get it,” Auburn head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] said in an emotional postgame interview with Andy Burcham of the Auburn Sports Network.

How will the NCAA Tournament committee see Auburn’s close loss on the road to Alabama? It is too early to tell. But the Tigers have one more shot to earn a trip to the big dance when they welcome No. 14 Tennessee to Neville Arena on Saturday afternoon.

As Auburn continues to claw towards a tournament berth, here’s a look at where Auburn stands in the major categories that are recognized by KenPom following the tough loss to Alabama on Wednesday.

Tiger of the Game: K.D. Johnson sweeps votes after recording season-high numbers

Out of all the great performances in a grueling game, it was K.D. Johnson that stood out the most.

After suffering a 32-point loss at Kentucky last Saturday, the Auburn Tigers needed a win over archrival Alabama in order to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive, or at least give the No. 2 Crimson Tide a run for their money.

Auburn was able to do the latter, as they forced the game into overtime before falling, 90-85 in overtime on Wednesday in Tuscaloosa.

Auburn led the game for 36:53, but Alabama’s endurance caught up with the Tigers in overtime and allowed the Crimson Tide to pull away. There were many contributors to Auburn’s win, some even competing until they were told they could no longer do so.

Four Tigers reached double figures, with [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] on the cusp of being the fifth with nine points. Three of those four fouled out during the game: [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag], [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag], and [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag].

However, out of all the great performances in a grueling game, it was [autotag]K.D. Johnson[/autotag] that stood out the most, thus sweeping Tiger of the Game votes.

Here’s a look at why Auburn Wire writers Taylor JonesJ.D. McCarthy, and River Wells, as well as Auburn fans, voted for Johnson as their Tiger of the Game following Auburn’s loss to Alabama.

The Tigers got big performances from [autotag]K.D. Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag] in the game. Johnson led the Tigers with 21 points off the bench while Flanigan had 17 points and eight rebounds before fouling out.
