Three Longhorns on 247Sports’ Top 50 CFB players of All-Time list

Recently 247Sports released their top 50 college football players of all-time list with three Texas Longhorns legends making the cut.

When it comes to any list that involves the best college football players of all-time, it is hard to imagine that the Longhorns wouldn’t be involved. Some very big names in the football world have come through the University of Texas. Legendary NFL coach Tom Landry, Hall of Fame quarterback Bobby Layne and Colt McCoy to name a few. These players played for top coaches in Dana X. Bible, Darryl K. Royal and Mack Brown.

247Sports put together their all-time greatest college football players list. One of the first names that many think of when it comes to Texas is a particular quarterback who played in an instant classic back in 2005. He comes in at number 44.

Number 44- Quarterback Vince Young

In the 2005 season, USC running back Reggie Bush beat out Vince Young for the Heisman, but in the following January’s BCS National Championship Game at the Rose Bowl, it was Young who turned in the MVP-winning performance, and led his Longhorns to a 41-38 win the over the Trojans, a thriller that was named the best bowl game of all time by the Football Bowl Association.

Coming in at 44 seems a bit low for Young but one can’t complain when being compared with some of the other quarterbacks on this list. The fourth-down run alone is still talked about as one of the best plays in college football history. Hard to believe it has been 14 years since VY raced to the corner of the end zone to give Texas their first National Championship in 35 years. Young is definitely deserving of being named to the top 50 college football players of all-time.

Young is the highest-rated recruit in Longhorns history with a perfect score. In fact he shares that honor with four other players, but he is the only one on offense. The former Maxwell and Davey O’Brien Award winner finished as the Heisman Trophy runner-up to Reggie Bush. Young is currently seventh- in career passing at Texas, third in total offense and one of only two quarterbacks to account for 500 plus yards of offense in a single game.

Favre among 10 QBs on NFL’s all-time team

Favre played two seasons with the Vikings in 2009 and 2010

The NFL announced the 10 quarterbacks that will be on its all-time team to celebrate 100 seasons.

The only quarterback with ties to the Vikings to make the team was Brett Favre, which means Fran Tarkenton, who was a finalist, did not make the team.

But Favre played two seasons with the Vikings and gosh darnit, we will claim him!

The other quarterbacks to make the team were Sammy Baugh, Tom Brady, John Elway, Otto Graham, Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Roger Staubach and Johnny Unitas.

Favre played two seasons with the Vikings in 2009 and 2010. His 2009 season was magical as he threw for 4,202 yards and 33 touchdowns while leading the Vikings to the NFC Championship.

Favre led the NFL in passing yards twice and touchdowns four times. With that, Favre also led the NFL in interceptions three seasons and his 336 career interceptions are first in NFL history by a wide margin (69).

Favre made it over players like Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers. Personally, I think Brees probably has more of a case than Rodgers, but it really doesn’t matter, does it?

Players to spend time with the Vikings to make the all-time team include Favre, Jan Stenerud, Alan Page, John Randle, Randall McDaniel and Randy Moss.

Ex-Chargers TE Kellen Winslow named to NFL 100 All-Time Team

A former Charger great joins a handful of the best players to play in the National Football League.

Former Chargers tight end Kellen Winslow has been named to the NFL 100 All-Time Team.

Winslow joins linebacker Junior Seau on the 100-player roster, which is being revealed position by position as the series within the celebration of the league’s 100th season.

Regarded as the one that revolutionized the position, Winslow set the record for most receiving yards in a single season by a tight end with 1,290 yards in 1980. In the same year, Winslow led the NFL in receptions with 89.

Winslow’s performance against the Miami Dolphins in the 1981 playoffs is his most memorable moment in his career.

Winslow finished the game with an NFL playoff-record 13 receptions for 166 yards. But it’s his blocked field goal at the end of regulation to force the game into overtime that may have been his biggest play of the game.

After nine seasons in the league, Winslow retired in 1987 due to multiple knee injuries that hampered him throughout his stint with the Chargers.

He finished his career with 541 receptions, 6,741 yards, 45 touchdowns, five Pro Bowl selections, along with being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995.
