Final 2022 NBA All-Star votes for the Houston Rockets

Four NBA players voted reserve guard DJ Augustin as an All-Star, while John Wall — who has yet to play this season — also had a player vote. Here’s a rundown of how all Rockets fared.

Entering Friday, the Rockets (14-34) possessed the worst record in the Western Conference. Thus, in a rebuilding season, it should come as no surprise that Houston’s young squad will not have a player representative at the 2022 NBA All-Star Game.

Nonetheless, in a hybrid format weighting votes from fans, a media panel, and players, the Rockets did still have many players receiving votes. Fans accounted for 50 percent of the vote to determine the starters, which were announced Thursday, while players and media accounted for 25 percent each. Reserves will be named next week.

Though no Houston player received votes from the media panel, it’s become clear over the years of this voting process that many fans and players will go by personal favorites, rather than true basketball merit. Even John Wall, who has not played in a single game this season as part of a mutual decision, received votes from fans and even a player!

Here’s a rundown of how each Houston player fared in regards to votes from fans and players (none received any from media).

Texas TE Cade Brewer to play in Hula Bowl College Football All-Star Game

Cade Brewer has another chance to showcase his talents.

Another Longhorn has garnered an opportunity to showcase their skills one final time as a college football player.

Tight end/h-back Cade Brewer, who was a super senior this past year thanks to the COVID-19 extra year of eligibility, saw his career as a Longhorn come to a close and now has his sights set on the NFL. He joins Jacoby Jones an Darion Dunn as the most recent Texas players that will be playing in an all-star game.

He announced via Twitter that he will have a chance to partake in the Hula Bowl College Football All-Star Game, which will give him and many other players a chance to get in front of NFL scouts and display their talents.

Brewer concluded his five-year career at Texas with 59 catches for 611 yards and eight touchdowns. He was more known as a blocking tight end, and will have a great chance at the next level to fill a team’s role of being a blocking tight end or even a fullback type of player.

Arike Ogunbowale named WNBA All-Star MVP

The Irish legend just took home some serious hardware.

In only her third WNBA season, Notre Dame legend Arike Ogunbowale is well on her way to becoming one of the best ever in women’s basketball. Ogunbowale, known to Irish fans for her heroics in the 2018 Final Four, added another accolade to her already impressive career. She led all scorers in the WNBA All-Star Game with 26 points to lead Team WNBA to a 93-85 win over the U.S. National Team, which is preparing for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. For her efforts, Ogunbowale was named the game’s MVP:

Ogunbowale, who is averaging 18.9 points a game for the Dallas Wings this season, had a pair of critical moments in the fourth quarter. With Team WNBA holding a two-point lead, she converted a four-point play. That six-point lead went down to five, but Ogunbowale made another 3-pointer and flaunted the moment for the Las Vegas crowd. The national team never got the deficit closer than six the rest of the way.

Baseball ruined the All-Star Game with those ugly and confusing uniforms

These uniforms were hideous.

This is the online version of our morning newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

Rob Manfred has done a lot of embarrassing things during his reign as commissioner of Major League Baseball.

He didn’t suspend and of the Astros players who cheated their way to a World Series title.

He called the World Series trophy as just a “piece of metal.”

And recently he had the umps shake down the pitchers as they left the field in a move that could easily be done a little more discreetly in the dugout.

Now we can add another embarrassing moment to his resume – he allowed the worst uniforms ever to be worn at the All-Star Game last night. I mean, did you see those things?

Fans were instantly outraged over the uniforms. The weird blue and white ones with the logo over three letters took away the tradition of having the players wearing their regular team uniforms. There’s just something nice about seeing the different uniforms as the players line up along the basepaths during introductions.

These new uniforms didn’t look great at all and they made it confusing for many people watching to pick out who was who.

That’s not great, baseball.

But that was such a baseball move.

It’s really hard to screw up something that is so easy as uniforms at an All-Star Game but Manfred and Co. are really good at doing just that.

Big All-Star Game being the only game on national TV on a nice summer night in July? Let’s confuse and anger the fans!

I’ve long wondered how Manfred continues to have the job of being the boss of baseball. It has made no sense to me over the past year and a half and it makes even less sense to me this morning. He didn’t design the uniforms, of course, but he should have at least seen them before they were used and he should have been like “No, we are absolutely not using those!”

That would have been too easy, though. And that would have been too good of a thing to do to the fans who enjoy watching the All-Star Game.

And that’s just now how baseball works!

It’s a shame, really. But it wasn’t surprising.

– Trae Young seemed to take a shot at former Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce over Team USA’s struggles in some exhibition games.

– Our Henry McKenna spoke with Michael Waldron, the head writer of Loki, before today’s finale. There’s lots of good stuff in here.

Watch: ESPN Cover Story covers Trey Mancini’s colon cancer battle

The Notre Dame alumnus has had quite the journey recently.

Before covering Trey Mancini’s near-win in the Home Run Derby, ESPN debuted a new piece about the Notre Dame product. Mancini, who is back with the Baltimore Orioles after missing all of the 2020 season, is one of baseball’s feel-good stories this year. Watching him play over the past few months, one never would have guessed that he isn’t far removed from stage 3 colon cancer. However, that’s exactly the case, and ESPN’s Kevin Van Valkenburg set out to tell Mancini’s story ahead of MLB’s All-Star festivities:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlVUNoOonf4

It doesn’t matter how long someone goes through chemotherapy or if the cancer even goes away. The whole thing is an experience no one should ever have to go through. While we don’t know if a cure for cancer will be developed during our lifetime, simply telling stories like Mancini’s gives us the motivation to keep that journey going. Every little bit will help us achieve that ultimate goal.

Notre Dame’s Mancini falls in Home Run Derby Final

Even the best comeback stories are rarely this good.

If it were a Hollywood script Trey Mancini would have upset defending Home Run Derby champion Pete Alonso and taken Monday’s derby crown.

Instead, it was Alonso winning the derby for a second year in a row and Mancini falling just short in what was one heck of an effort.

Mancini started Monday night’s home run derby by upsetting Matt Olson of the Oakland A’s in the first round, 24-23 before then knocking out Trevor Story of the host Colorado Rockies in the semi-finals.

This sent the sixth-seeded Mancini to the finals to take on Alonso where he fell 23-22, as Alonso’s walk-off winner came during the bonus time he had earned.

Even without the trophy it was an incredible coming out party for Mancini, who missed all of the 2020 season while battling colon cancer.

It may not have been the Hollywood ending all of us non-Mets fans wanted, but it was still an ovation worthy showing by Mancini.

Watch: Notre Dame pitching coach Chuck Ristano talks Trey Mancini

Hear some valuable insights from one half of the Notre Dame contingent for this year’s Home Run Derby.

The Home Run Derby, to be held one day before the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Denver, will have a Notre Dame flavor. That’s because Irish product and Baltimore Orioles slugger Trey Mancini is competing. What’s more, he’s inviting Irish pitching Chuck Ristano to be his personal pitcher for the event, fulfilling a promise Mancini made when the two teamed up for Mancini’s win in the 2012 Big East Home Run Derby. It’s an anecdote mention in an interview Ristano gave to MASN, which broadcasts Orioles games:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-R795yg8rO0

Ristano gives plenty of insight as it pertains to Mancini’s connection with Notre Dame. Among them are Mancini completing his degree requirements at the university while he played in the minor leagues and the impact of former Irish catcher Ricky Palmer, who lost his battle with cancer whereas Mancini survived his. Most importantly, Mancini’s connection with his alma mater has not wavered in the least, and that should make all Irish fans proud.

Watch: Trey Mancini video released to promote Home Run Derby

Get hyped for the former Irish star’s big moment coming soon.

It’s been quite a year for Baltimore Orioles slugger and former Notre Dame player Trey Mancini. His reward for coming back after being diagnosed with colon cancer, at least for the moment, is the opportunity to compete in this year’s Home Run Derby. To get fans excited about him being at the appetizer to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Denver, the following video has come out:

Mancini is one of the few bright spots for the struggling Orioles, achieving an OPS of .789, hitting 14 home runs and driving in 52 runs. He hopes to display some of his power when Irish pitching coach Chuck Ristano serves as his personal pitcher during the derby. He also might secretly be hoping that it will serve as a showcase for any team interested in him at the trade deadline. Whatever his motives are, he will want to take advantage of a moment during which the entire baseball universe squarely will be watching him.
