Demario Davis is the only Saints player on CBS Sports’ preseason All-NFL Team

Demario Davis was the only New Orleans Saints player on CBS Sports’ preseason All-NFL Team, though a few teammates received votes:

Just one New Orleans Saints player was recognized on the preseason All-NFL Team from CBS Sports, as voted on by a panel of staff writers and senior columnist Pete Prisco. And that would be the team’s lone first-team Pro Bowler from the 2022 season: veteran linebacker Demario Davis.

No Saints players on offense even received votes. While Davis did earn the second-most votes at linebacker (eight of the ten voters gave him the nod), a couple of his teammates were included as honorable mentions.

Two voters selected Tyrann Mathieu at safety, who led the team in takeaways last season with 3 interceptions, a forced fumble, and a recovery. Just one voter shouted out star cornerback Marshon Lattimore, whose reputation took a hit to recency bias when he was sidelined for much of the 2022 campaign with an injury. He’s as impactful as ever, but analysts and fans have short memories, and it’s easy to overlook him when other players are active while he is not.

So the Saints clearly have some work to do to in the months ahead. Winning games and playing good football will do a lot to reshape their reputation. But falling back into bad habits and losing matchups against lesser opponents, as was too often the case last year, will just result in even more football fans overlooking them.

Two former Ohio State defenders named to PFWA’s All-NFL team

Ohio State is just one of four programs with former players making the PFWA’s All-NFL team for 2021-2022.

On Monday, two former Ohio State defensive linemen were named to the Pro Football Writers Associations All-NFL team. Both the San Francisco 49ers Nick Bosa and Cameron Heyward of the Pittsburgh Steelers were among 36 players that received the honor.

For Bosa, he should be on the shortlist for Comeback Player of the Year after tearing his ACL last season and coming back arguably as strong as ever. He has totaled 58 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and 18 sacks on the way to leading the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship Game. He’ll get a chance to appear in his second Super Bowl in three years if the ‘Niners can beat the Los Angeles Rams this weekend.

Heyward has been one of the most productive defensive tackles over the last decade in the NFL, carving out quite the career. He finished the season with a whopping 93 total tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, and an interception.

It’s the first time Bosa has been selected to the All-NFL team, and the second for Cameron Heyward. Ohio State was just one of four college programs with two players named to the team joining Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin.

Another week. More postseason honors.

A post shared by Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) on

The Pittsburgh Steelers defense continues to be recognized in postseason honors. The Steelers trio of defensive stars are all All-Pros and now have been voted by the Pro Football Writers Association of America to their All-NFL team.

Linebacker T.J. Watt, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and defensive tackle Cam Heyward all made the team. These three perfectly represent each level of a Steelers’ defense that kept them in the playoff hunt all season despite a litany of injuries.

Everyone expected big things from Heyward and Watt but the addition of Fitzpatrick during a rare in-season trade is the move that really put the Steelers defense over the top. It is easy to imagine just how good this team would have been if Ben Roethlisberger hadn’t been hurt and this defense didn’t feel like they had to win every game.
