12 Broncos free agents are still unsigned

Now that the NFL draft is over, should the Broncos look for any bargain free agents?

Now that the NFL draft has passed, teams will begin looking to round out their rosters with bargain free agents.

There are 12 Denver Broncos free agents who are still unsigned, and some of them might make sense to return to the team. Here’s the list:

16 Broncos free agents are still unsigned

There are 16 Broncos free agents who are still available, including RB Melvin Gordon and LB Kenny Young.

The Denver Broncos have made 20 roster moves this offseason and there are still some notable players available, including a few of their own in-house free agents. Here’s a quick look at the 16 Broncos players who are still unsigned at the time of this writing.

Broncos want to re-sign pending free agent LB Josey Jewell

The Broncos appear to be prioritizing Josey Jewell over fellow pending free agents Kenny Young and Alexander Johnson.

The Denver Broncos will meet with inside linebacker Josey Jewell’s agent, Jack Bechta, at the NFL combine in Indianapolis this week, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Jewell (6-2, 236 pounds) is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 16, and the Broncos would like to re-sign him before then, according to Klis.

The 27-year-old defender entered the league as a fourth-round pick out of Iowa in 2018. After playing primarily on special teams through his first two seasons, Jewell won a starting job in 2020 and totaled 113 tackles and two sacks.

Following his breakout season, Jewell suffered a season-ending pectoral injury two games into Denver’s 2021 campaign. That injury might hurt Jewell’s market value, which could potentially make him a cheaper option than teammate Kenny Young (another pending free agent).

Alexander Johnson is also scheduled to become a free agent, but he’s three years older than Jewell. The Broncos might hold talks with Young and Johnson, but it seems clear that Jewell is the team’s priority at linebacker.

While Young and Johnson will presumably be allowed to test free agency, Denver’s hoping to give Jewell an extension before free agency begins.

Broncos players on injured reserve total almost $40 million in salary cap hits

Broncos players on injured reserve total almost $40 million in salary cap hits.

The Denver Broncos haven’t been hit quite as hard by injuries this year as they were last season, but the team has had some significant injuries.

Denver’s list of players on injured reserve accounts for $39,656,992 worth of salary cap space, according to OverTheCap.com. Here’s a quick look at the six IR players with the biggest cap hits this season.

Alexander Johnson placed on injured reserve

Former Vol Alexander Johnson placed on injured reserve by Broncos.

The Denver Broncos have placed linebacker Alexander Johnson on injured reserve, ending his 2021 season.

Johnson, a linebacker and former standout player for Tennessee, was placed on injured reserve after suffering a torn pectoral muscle in the Broncos’ 34-24 loss to Las Vegas on Oct. 17.

He is Denver’s second leading tackler (32, 20 solo) and 4.5 sacks.

The Broncos (3-4) have lost four consecutive games and Johnson is Denver’s third defensive starter to land on injured reserve, joining Josey Jewell and Bradley Chubb.

Jewell also has a torn pectoral muscle, while Chubb went on injured reserve to have a bone spur removed.

Johnson had four tackles before leaving the game against the Raiders.

Broncos made 5 moves at linebacker ahead of ‘Thursday Night Football’

After losing Alexander Johnson to a season-ending injury, the Broncos made some roster adjustments at linebacker.

After losing starting inside linebacker Alexander Johnson to a season-ending pectoral injury, the Denver Broncos made five roster moves ahead of a “Thursday Night Football” showdown with the Cleveland Browns.

Here’s a quick recap of the team’s five transactions.

Broncos LB Alexander Johnson has a season-ending pec injury

The Broncos have lost both of their starting ILBs (Josey Jewell and Alexander Johnson) to season-ending pec injuries this year.

Denver Broncos inside linebacker tore a pectoral muscle during Sunday’s loss to the Las Vegas Raiders and he will now miss the rest of the 2021 NFL season, coach Vic Fangio confirmed during his Monday press conference.

The Broncos had previously lost their other starting inside linebacker, Josey Jewell, earlier this year (also to a season-ending pec injury). Denver is now extremely thin at the position, with only Justin Strnad, rookie Baron Browning (who suffered a concussion Sunday) and Micah Kiser remaining on the 53-man roster.

Strnad has been starting in the place of Jewell and Kiser started nine games for the Los Angeles Rams last year, so the Broncos do have some experience at the position, but a drop off in performance at ILB should be expected.

Before tearing his pec, Johnson totaled 32 tackles, three pass breakups and two sacks in six games this season. He led the team with 124 tackles in 2020.

Denver has two inside linebackers — Curtis Robinson and Barrington Wade — available on the practice squad. It wouldn’t be surprising to see one (or both) of them added to the active roster before Thursday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

Broncos LB Alexander Johnson injured vs. Raiders

#Broncos ILB Alexander Johnson (chest), ILB Baron Browning (concussion) and OLB Andre Mintze (hamstring) have been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the #Raiders.

Denver Broncos inside linebacker Alexander Johnson suffered a chest injury against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday and was ruled out in the third quarter.

The Broncos were already thin at linebacker with Josey Jewell on injured reserve and Baron Browning suffering a concussion in Week 6. Browning has also been ruled out, leaving Justin Strnad and Micah Kiser as the only healthy inside linebackers still available against Las Vegas.

Johnson totaled four tackles before leaving the game. Kiser is filling Johnson’s former spot in Denver’s base defense.

In addition to Johnson and Browning, Broncos outside linebacker Andre Mintze (hamstring) has also been ruled out of the game with an injury.

At the time of this writing in the third quarter, Denver is currently trailing the Raiders 24-7 at home.
