UFC 287 ‘Embedded,’ No. 2: Pereira and Adesanya turn up the heat, plus a tour of the streets of Miami

The “Embedded” fight week video series is back to document what’s happening behind the scenes at UFC 287 in Miami.

The UFC is back with its fifth pay-per-view of the year, which means the popular “Embedded” fight-week video series is here to document what’s happening behind the scenes.

UFC 287 takes place Saturday at Miami-Dade Arena in Miami. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.

In the main event, middleweight champion [autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] (7-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) defends his title for the first time in a rematch with former champ [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] (23-2 MMA, 12-2 UFC). Pereira upset Adesanya for the title this past November and also holds two kickboxing wins over him.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Gilbert Burns[/autotag] (21-5 MMA, 14-5 UFC) takes on [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag] (35-16 MMA, 12-9 UFC) in a key welterweight fight. Plus, [autotag]Rob Font[/autotag] (19-6 MMA, 9-5 UFC) takes on [autotag]Adrian Yanez[/autotag] (16-3 MMA, 5-0 UFC) in a key bantamweight bout.

The second episode of “Embedded” follows the featured fighters while they get ready for fight week. Here is the UFC’s description of the episode from YouTube:

Sean O’Malley picks Israel Adesanya to beat Alex Pereira at UFC 287: ‘I think he’ll come out and wrestle’

If Sean O’Malley was betting $10,000, he’d put it on Israel Adesanya to beat Alex Pereira at UFC 287.

If [autotag]Sean O’Malley[/autotag] was betting $10,000, he’d put it on [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] to beat [autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] at UFC 287.

Adesanya (23-2 MMA, 12-2 UFC) will seek revenge in Saturday’s headliner when he looks to reclaim the middleweight title from Pereira (7-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) at Miami-Dade Arena in Miami. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.

Pereira rallied to finish Adesanya late in Round 5 at UFC 281, but O’Malley envisions an Adesanya finish, and thinks Pereira’s big weight cut will impact his durability. “Poatan” has teased a move to light heavyweight in the past, and his coach and mentor Glover Teixeira told MMA Junkie he even could have a future at heavyweight.

“How much weight is (Pereira) cutting? Izzy really doesn’t have to land clean too many times if he’s cutting that much weight,” O’Malley said on his Timbo Sugar Show podcast. “That motherf*cker’s cutting 20 pounds, 25 pounds. Fight week, your chin goes, your brain fluid (goes).”

O’Malley pointed to Adesanya’s control time in his first fight with Pereira as a factor and sees him leaning on his wrestling.

“I think (Adesanya will) come out and wrestle,” O’Malley added. “I feel like he’s going to come out, he’s got a couple maybe good takedowns, come out (and) wrestle, put him on his back, really get him thinking. Maybe (Pereira) won’t be able to march forward as much.”

Why Israel Adesanya is surprised he’s betting favorite vs. Alex Pereira at UFC 287

“I am surprised by that, to be honest, because I thought these bookies were not as smart as they are.”

[autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] admits he didn’t expect oddsmakers to favor him against [autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] at UFC 287.

Adesanya (23-2 MMA, 12-2 UFC) will look to reclaim the middleweight belt from Pereira (7-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) in Saturday’s main event at Miami-Dade Arena in Miami. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.

According to DraftKings, Adesanya is a -155 favorite, meaning a $155 bet would be needed on the former champion to return $100 profit. Pereira is a +135 underdog, meaning a $100 bet on the champion would win $135.

“I am surprised by that, to be honest, because I thought these bookies were not as smart as they are,” Adesanya told TMZ. “I’m surprised they actually picked me as the favorite because I am the more polished fighter, but he’s just the guy that’s got the tools, he’s got that nuke. Only a few fighters in history have that.

“Eugene said in an interview: You’re lucky to face a Mike Tyson. You’re lucky to face a guy like David Tua. You’re lucky to face a guy like Deontay Wilder, even just once in your career. You’re lucky to face a guy like Alex Pereira even once in your career. So yeah, lucky me.”

[lawrence-related id=2630552,2630437,2629197]

It may not come as a surprise that Adesanya is a slight favorite considering that he was up 3-1 on the judges’ scorecards in their first fight at UFC 281 before he was stopped late in Round 5. Adesanya almost finished Pereira at the end of Round 1, but “Poatan” likely was saved by the bell.

“One more shot – one more shot is all it took,” Adesanya said. “I did the same thing when I fought my guy Rob (Whittaker) at UFC 243 – the last second, I dropped him. I’m dangerous every second of every fight.”

Alex Pereira reveals Israel Adesanya interview that motivated him to join the UFC: ‘I felt challenged’

“I felt challenged. And whenever there’s a challenge, no one can hold me back.”

[autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] didn’t like how [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] disregarded his legacy, so he followed him to the UFC.

Less than a year after he suffered his second loss to Pereira (7-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) in kickboxing, Adesanya (23-2 MMA, 12-2 UFC) signed with the UFC and went on to become a middleweight great. He captured the belt and defended it five times.

Pereira dethroned him. He needed just three octagon wins to earn his shot at UFC 281, where he rallied to knock “The Stylebender” out. The pair will rematch in Saturday’s UFC 287 headliner in Miami, and Pereira revealed Adesanya’s rise in the UFC fueled him.

“When Israel Adesanya joined the UFC, I started taking a close look because I had interest in fighting in MMA,” Pereira said during the UFC 287 Countdown. “There is a video of an interview with Israel Adesanya that motivated me so much.”

Pereira was referring to an interview Adesanya did with Sporting News Australia in 2020, in which he was dismissive of him.

“He watches all my fights, and every time I fight, like clockwork, he’d try to put something out like, ‘I beat this guy,'” Adesanya said. “At the end of the day, no one knows who the f*ck he is, and he’s going to be that guy when I’m world champion, when I’m a legend, he’s going to be at some pub talking sh*t about, ‘I beat that guy one time.'”

Pereira didn’t take too well to Adesanya’s words, and their storyline led to his quick rise in the UFC.

“I felt challenged,” Pereira said. “And whenever there’s a challenge, no one can hold me back. I wanted new challenges, and the UFC was it.”

Spinning Back Clique: UFC 287, Pereira-Adesanya 2, PFL opener, Gamebred Boxing, more (noon ET)

Check out this week’s “Spinning Back Clique” live stream covering the biggest topics in MMA, including a look ahead to UFC 287.

Check out this week’s “Spinning Back Clique,” MMA Junkie’s weekly live show that takes a spin through the biggest topics in mixed martial arts. This week’s panel of Brian “Goze” Garcia, Mike Bohn and Dan Tom will join host Farah Hannoun live at noon ET (9 a.m. PT) to discuss and debate:

  • One of the most talked about rematches in UFC history is set for Saturday in Miami when middleweight champion [autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] puts his title on the line in a rematch with former champ [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag]. Adesanya was up 3-1 in the fifth round of their first fight this past November when Pereira caught him and knocked him out. The Brazilian also has two wins over him in kickboxing. Recently Adesanya said his fight with Pereira could be his “last shot.” Is he blowing things out of proportion, or is there some truth to that?
  • In the co-main event at UFC 287, Miami’s own [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag] is back to take on [autotag]Gilbert Burns[/autotag]. Masvidal, a regular lightning rod for controversy who is awaiting trial for an alleged attack of [autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag], is a heavy underdog in the fight. He’s lost three straight. Yet he maintains if he wins impressively, he’ll leapfrog Covington into a title shot with welterweight champ Leon Edwards – another of his big rivals. Is that likely to happen? Or can Burns make that same case, himself?
  • [autotag]Brendan Loughnane[/autotag] won $1 million in the 2022 PFL featherweight season. Saturday, he started off his quest for a repeat with 5 points and a finish of Marlon Moraes. Afterward, he talked about putting some respect on his name – and that he needs to be considered among the world’s best at 145 pounds. Is he?
  • Masvidal’s Gamebred Boxing took its show on the road to Milwaukee on Saturday with home city hero Anthony Pettis in the main event for his boxing debut against all-time legend Roy Jones Jr. But Pettis wasn’t alone for MMA standouts on the card, which included Jose Aldo vs. Jeremy Stephens, Vitor Belfort vs. Ronaldo Souza, Pearl Gonzalez vs. Gina Mazany and more. How do we rate some of the MMA performances in their crossovers – and do we want to see more of it?
  • The top two fights are UFC 287 are big ones, to be certain. But the rest of the card features some big names, too. Outside of the 1-2 punch in Miami, who is going to steal the show? Adrian Yanez? Kevin Holland? Or maybe someone farther down the card? We take a deep dive.

“Spinning Back Clique” is released each Monday LIVE on MMA Junkie’s YouTube channel. You can watch this week’s episode in the video above.
