UFC Fight Night 216 video: Alex Caceres lands beautiful head kick, pounds out Julian Erosa

Check out this brutal head kick finish from “Bruce Leeroy” Alex Caceres.

[autotag]Alex Caceres[/autotag] added one to the highlight reel Saturday at the UFC Apex.

In a featherweight main card bout at UFC Fight Night 216, Caceres (20-13 MMA, 15-11 UFC) high-kicked his way to victory when he finished [autotag]Julian Erosa[/autotag] (28-10 MMA, 6-6 UFC) at the 3:04 mark of Round 1.

After nearly three minutes of technical striking, Caceres ended the bout when he hid a kick behind his punch on the same side. When the punch missed, the kick was right there – and Erosa didn’t see it.

The kick floored Erosa, who tried to recover. As Erosa’s brain tried to unscramble, he was met with some follow-up punches from Caceres that finished the job with punches.

With the win, Caceres bounced back from a March loss to Sodiq Yusuff and moved to 6-1 in his most recent seven. A three-fight winning streak for Erosa came to an end.

Up-to-the-minute UFC Fight Night 216 results include:

  • Alex Caceres def. Julian Erosa via knockout (head kick) – Round 1, 3:04
  • Drew Dober def. Bobby Green via knockout (punches) – Round 2, 2:45
  • Michal Oleksiejczuk def. Cody Brundage via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 3:16
  • Cory McKenna def. Cheyanne Vlismas via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Matthew Semelsberger def. Jake Matthews via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Said Nurmagomedov def. Saidyokub Kakhramonov via submission (guillotine choke) – Round 2, 3:50
  • Rafael Garcia def. Maheshate via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
  • Rinat Fakhretdinov def. Bryan Battle via unanimous decision (30-25, 30-25, 30-27)

The UFC stays in its home base this week, and middleweights are atop the promotion’s final card of the year.

UFC Fight Night 216 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, recent title challenger [autotag]Jared Cannonier[/autotag] (15-6 MMA, 8-6 UFC) takes on [autotag]Sean Strickland[/autotag] (25-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC). The fight nearly is a pick’em at Tipico Sportsbook. Cannonier is the slight favorite at -115; the comeback on Strickland is -105. Our 10 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have Cannonier with a narrow 6-4 picks lead.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Damir Ismagulov[/autotag] (24-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) meets [autotag]Arman Tsarukyan[/autotag] (18-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) at lightweight. Tsarukyan is a -190 betting favorite and a near-unanimous pick at 9-1.

Also on the main card, our lone unanimous pick is [autotag]Amir Albazi[/autotag] (15-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) in his flyweight bout against [autotag]Alessandro Costa[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC). Albazi is the biggest favorite on the entire card at -450.

[autotag]Alex Caceres[/autotag] (19-13 MMA, 14-11 UFC) takes on [autotag]Julian Erosa[/autotag] (28-9 MMA, 6-5 UFC) in a featherweight fight. Erosa is a mild favorite at -170 and has a 7-3 lead in the picks.

[autotag]Drew Dober[/autotag] (25-11 MMA, 11-7 UFC) and [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] (29-13-1 MMA, 10-8-1 UFC) clash in a fight between longtime UFC lightweights. Dober is a -150 favorite, but he has just a slim 6-4 lead in the picks.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Cody Brundage[/autotag] (8-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) takes on [autotag]Michal Oleksiejczuk[/autotag] (17-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC) at middleweight. Oleksiejczuk is a big -280 favorite, but three of our pickers are taking Brundage in an upset.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Cannonier (62 percent), Tsarukyan (66 percent), Albazi (85 percent), Erosa (55 percent), Dober (66 percent) and Oleksiejczuk (71 percent) are the choices.

UFC’s Julian Erosa says there will be ‘no stagnant time’ in Alex Caceres fight, expects ‘all action’

Julian Erosa doesn’t see how his UFC Fight Night 216 bout with Alex Caceres won’t deliver.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Julian Erosa[/autotag] doesn’t see how his fight with [autotag]Alex Caceres[/autotag] won’t deliver.

Erosa (28-9 MMA, 6-5 UFC) meets Caceres (19-13 MMA, 14-11 UFC) on Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 216 main card at the UFC Apex. The card streams on ESPN+. It’s a bout Erosa has wanted for a while and stylistically he likes how he matches up with Caceres.

“I’ve been asking for this fight for a while mainly just because I think it’s a fun one,” Erosa told MMA Junkie and other reporters at UFC Fight Night 216 media day on Wednesday. “He likes to stand and trade, and he’s very creative on the feet, and I feel like I’m pretty unorthodox on the feet, as well. We’re both decent grapplers, as well. So I feel like anywhere this fight takes place, there will be no stagnant time. It’s gonna be all action for 15 minutes or just someone gets finished.”

[lawrence-related id=2605343]

Erosa is enjoying his best octagon run having won three straight, most recently upsetting Hakeem Dawodu at UFC 279. With Caceres winning five of his past six, Erosa thinks the winner could end up in the UFC’s featherweight rankings.

“I just figured it would be a good matchup after my last win, and he lost his last fight, so I feel like we’re kind of hovering around that same area,” Erosa explained. “It’ll be kind of the guy who wins this kind of hits that 15 spot maybe.”

UFC’s Alex Caceres has considered move to Power Slap, dismisses concerns over brain health

Slap fighting isn’t good for brain health, according to health professionals, but Alex Caceres says “neither is eating bad food.”

LAS VEGAS – If UFC president Dana White approaches [autotag]Alex Caceres[/autotag] about participating in his slap fighting league, he just might do it.

Caceres, who meets Julian Erosa in a featherweight bout Saturday at UFC Fight Night 216 at the UFC Apex, told reporters Wednesday that he’d be open to a move to Power Slap.

“I have considered it,” Caceres said during UFC Fight Night 216 media day. “I think it’s hilarious, it’s cool. I don’t know, it’s funny. It’s pain tolerance. I’m pretty sure that’s what it’s mostly about. I figure I have pretty big hands. I know I’m like one of the only 145ers who wears large gloves in the UFC. I think I could be pretty decent at slapping somebody.”

Caceres apparently hadn’t considered criticisms of slap fighting raised by doctors and health professionals.

“What are the criticisms?” he asked.

Chief among them is the nature of the competition, which calls for repeated full-forced, open-hand slaps to the face between two opponents. This led one doctor, Brian Sutterer, to deem slap fighting “as risky of a sport as possible” for brain injuries. He takes issue with participants not being able to defend themselves, unlike in MMA, and can’t understand why any athletic commission would sanction slap fighting as the Nevada Athletic Commission did to accommodate Power Slap events at the UFC Apex.

When it was mentioned that slap fighting isn’t good for brain health, Caceres responded, “Neither is smoking cigarettes, neither is working in factory plants, neither is eating bad food or getting punched in the head for a living like I do. I mean, a lot of things are dangerous. Sitting still is dangerous. Being too sedentary can mess up your brain. So, yeah, take your chances. It’s your life.”

[lawrence-related id=2599662,2591403,2589420]

Caceres (19-13 MMA, 14-11 UFC) hopes to get back on track vs. Erosa (28-9 MMA, 6-5 UFC) after losing a unanimous decision to Sodiq Yusuff in his most recent bout, which snapped a five-fight winning streak.
