Broncos officially announce first 8 roster cuts

The Broncos officially announced their first eight roster cuts as the team approaches a 53-man roster.

The Denver Broncos took their first eight steps toward finalizing a 53-man roster on Monday.

First, the Broncos released three veterans: defensive lineman Angelo Blackson, wide receiver Phillip Dorsett and inside linebacker Andre Smith. Those players will not be subject to the NFL’s waiver wire.

Second, the team waived five young players: safety Omar Brown, cornerback Art Green, defensive back Kaleb Hayes, offensive lineman Oliver Jervis and inside linebacker Alec Mock.

Those are the first eight official cuts among 38 moves on deck in Denver. The Broncos confirmed those cuts on Monday.

It was not announced by the club, but the team also informed punter Trenton Gill that he will be waived. The fact that the Gill cut is not yet official suggests Denver might be looking to trade the punter ahead of the roster cuts deadline.

The Broncos also made decisions on wide receiver Tim Patrick and running back Samaje Perine on Monday. Denver will look to trade both Patrick and Perine. If they are unable to find trade partners, the Broncos will release those veterans before submitting a 53-man roster on Tuesday.

We are tracking all of the team’s roster moves on Broncos Wire.

Broncos make two roster moves ahead of Packers preseason game

The Broncos re-signed linebacker Alec Mock and waived pass rusher Jaylon Allen.

The Denver Broncos made a pair of roster moves on Wednesday.

First, the Broncos signed inside linebacker Alec Mock. To make room for Mock on the 90-man offseason roster, Denver waived rookie outside linebacker Jaylon Allen in a second move.

Allen (6-3, 240 pounds) was waived with an injury settlement. He joined the team this spring as an undrafted rookie out of Memphis.

Mock (6-3, 240 pounds) originally signed with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent from the Air Force Academy on May 10. He was cut on June 20 and then re-signed on Aug. 6. The Broncos cut him again on Aug. 12 and have now re-signed him again on Aug. 14 after he cleared waivers.

In four seasons with the Air Force Falcons, Mock totaled 224 tackles, five sacks, four pass breakups, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one interception returned 18 yards for a touchdown.

Denver will host the Green Bay Packers in Week 2 of NFL preseason on Sunday night. The game will be nationally televised on NFL Network.

Broncos made two roster moves after first preseason game

The Broncos claimed DB Kaleb Hayes off waivers on Monday and cut LB Alec Mock to make room.

The Denver Broncos made two roster moves following their 34-30 win over the Indianapolis Colts in their preseason opener on Sunday.

First, the Broncos claimed defensive back Kaleb Hayes off waivers from the New York Giants on Monday. Hayes was waived by the Giants on Sunday to make room for linebacker K.J. Cloyd.

Denver’s second roster move was waiving linebacker Alec Mock to make room for Hayes on their 90-man offseason roster. Mock has had a bumpy ride with the Broncos. He originally joined the team as an undrafted free agent from the Air Force Academy on May 10 but was cut on June 20. Denver then re-signed Mock on Aug. 6, only to waive him again on Aug. 12.

As for Hayes, he is a second-year player out of BYU and Oregon State who entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2023. Hayes spent last season on the New York Giants’ practice squad. He is yet to appear in a regular season game in the NFL.

Check out these highlights of new Broncos LB Alec Mock

Alec Mock totaled 93 tackles for the Air Force last fall. He’ll compete for a linebacker role at Broncos training camp.

The Denver Broncos signed an undrafted free agent out of the Air Force Academy, Alec Mock, earlier this offseason. Mock played inside linebacker at the academy and contributed for all four years. Mock will now aim to impress Denver’s coaches this summer.

Mock’s career at the Air Force was a sign of progress each year: In his first year, he recorded 13 tackles in 2020 and 53 as a sophomore in 2021, participating in 11 games. He continued progressing as a linebacker in 2022, with 65 tackles in 11 games. Lastly, in his senior season, he recorded 93 tackles in 13 games. He kept climbing and progressed each year.

Check out his highlights:

Mock will have an uphill climb to make the roster. So far, Denver has Alex Singleton and Cody Barton holding down the starting inside spots, while Drew Sanders and Jonas Griffith are the projected backups. Whether it’s on the active roster or on the practice squad spot, Mock will aim to make the squad during training camp this summer.
