Report Card: Grading Alabama’s dominating win over ULM

Alabama handled business on Saturday with a 63-7 win over ULM. Let’s take a look at the Crimson Tide’s report card for Week 3.

Alabama did precisely what they were supposed to do on Saturday completely dominating the ULM Warhawks 63-7. While the performance was not perfect, the Crimson Tide would score in various ways, including one on defense and two from the special teams unit.

Head coach [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] has to be pleased with the effort the team came out with jumping out to a 28-0 lead after the first quarter. But in the second quarter, the Tide would lose a little bit of its intensity.

Any time you can hang a 60 burger you have to be pleased but there is still plenty of areas the Crimson Tide will need to improve on.

Let’s take a look at this week’s report card.

Alabama vs ULM Game Preview

Why ULM Will Win

The Warhawks are able to get enough consistency out of Chandler Rogers and the passing game to make a difference.

There are just enough plays down the field for the suddenly-concerning Bama secondary to worry – seriously, were there any pass plays against Texas without grabbing and holding from the Tide DBs? – and there’s a decent enough rotation of backs to have options.

The Warhawks aren’t screwing up. They’ve only been hit with 11 penalties so far and one turnover.

11 penalties? Alabama got flagged 15 times – and it really should’ve been closer to 25 if the officials were consistent – in the win over Texas.

Why Alabama Will Win

Alabama might not have been pretty against the Longhorns, but it got the win.

Whether it’s by one or 42, any victory you can come up with is a good one.

Texas beat ULM by 42.

For all of the problems and all of the issues and all of the concerns that came out of the trip to Austin, the running game was terrific – the Tide are averaging close to eight yards per pop – and Bryce Young didn’t screw up. He didn’t get any help from his wide receivers, but he still made it all work.

He’ll get help out of his receivers in this.

ULM’s secondary hasn’t been anything special so far, there won’t be any pass rush, and the run defense will get pounded on for the first time this season.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s the perfect time for ULM to roll into Tuscaloosa.

There’s this, then a home game against Vanderbilt, and then the schedule gets nasty. The team needs tuning, it has to get the wide receivers more involved, and the secondary has to be a whole lot sharper without so much grabbing.

Of course Nick Saban is worrying about the win – the 21-14 loss to the Warhawks in his first year with the Tide is still discussed – but this will be used more like a scrimmage to fix the problems exposed by the Longhorns.

At least that’s the hope.

Along the way, the only drama will over how long Bryce Young plays.

Roll Tide Wire staff predictions for Alabama vs. ULM

The staff at Roll Tide Wire dishes out their predictions for Alabama’s Week 3 matchup with Louisiana Monroe.

It sounds weird to say it but this week’s matchup with ULM is an opportunity for Alabama to make a statement. The criticism that the Tide has received this week following their nail-biting victory last Saturday has been loud and clear.

Many people believe that Alabama has lost its edge over the competition. While Saturday’s performance most likely will not prove anything, it is Alabama’s next opportunity to flex its muscles.

Alabama should come out and dominate the Warhawks from start to finish. I think most Tide fans are just looking for some consistency from this group. Let’s see if they can accomplish that or not.

Staff predicts the game

Alabama (-48.5) Record ATS Winner Record Overall
AJ Spurr Alabama 1-1 Alabama 2-0
Stacey Blackwood Alabama 1-1 Alabama 2-0
Sam Murphy Texas 0-2 Alabama 2-0
Brody Smoot Alabama 1-1 Alabama 2-0

AJ Spurr

Coming off of an ugly road win, Alabama had plenty of things to work on this week in preparation for Louisiana Monroe. One of the nation’s most dominant edge rushers, Will Anderson, did not play well last week. He’s out to prove he’s still worthy of being in the Heisman conversation. This one has all the makings for a rough day for the Warhawks.

Stacey Blackwood

It’s no secret that Alabama did not play to the Alabama standard last weekend. Coach Saban has preached all week long about practicing and playing with the right mentality. I believe last Saturday was a wake-up call for the Tide. Unfortunately for the Warhawks, they are next in line. Alabama will control this game from start to finish.

Alabama 55, ULM 3

Sam Murphy

After a very sloppy week 2 performance, Coach Saban will be driving home discipline the entire week. Expect a focused Alabama side after 15 penalties in Texas. It will be interesting to see if Alabama figures out a way to get the receivers more involved this week, but the Tide are far more talented and shouldn’t struggle much.

Alabama 56, ULM 6

Brody Smoot

Alabama is coming off of a nail-biter against Texas. That won’t be the case in Week 3 against the Warhawks. I believe that Alabama will get back to its standard of football. They will clean up the penalties and play well on both sides of the ball. I expect this game to be over early. Alabama has too many assets on offense for the Warhawks to keep. I like Alabama big in this one.

Alabama 63, ULM 7
