Alabama vs Ole Miss Game Preview

Why Alabama Will Win

How does Alabama want to move the ball?

The passing game didn’t click against LSU and wasn’t razor-sharp against Mississippi State, but Bryce Young is still Bryce Young – he keeps things moving even if he doesn’t have elite receivers to work with.

The Ole Miss defense is scuffling.

All of a sudden, Texas A&M freshman Conner Weigman became Joe Burrow throwing for 338 yards and four touchdowns with no picks in the 31-28 loss to the Rebels, and that was an off day against this secondary.

Passing games were able to connect on 70% of their passes in three of the last five games, the Rebel run defense is leaky, and it all means the Tide offense should click.

However …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Ole Miss Will Win

Just how down is Alabama?

There’s no national title to play for, it lost two of its last three games, and it’s been a big dud on the road so far.

It should’ve lost at Texas, struggled for three quarters against Arkansas, and lost to Tennessee and LSU. When it comes to momentum and things to play for, Ole Miss should have the energy.

It needs to win out and LSU has to lose to either Arkansas or Texas A&M, but it’s right there in the mix for the SEC championship and the College Football Playoff.

How did LSU beat Bama? It didn’t make a slew of mistakes, kept things moving with the passing attack, and it ran for well over five yards per carry. The Ole Miss ground game leads the SEC and is the third best in the nation with a great rotation cranking up yards in chunks.

Run well, beat Bama. Struggle on the ground, and there’s a problem.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Rebels have been under five yards per carry only twice. Once was in the blowout loss to LSU, and other was in the close call fight to Kentucky.

On the flip side, the Alabama run defense has allowed over three yards per pop just three times. Arkansas averaged 3.7 yards per carry and made it a fight, Tennessee averaged over four yards, and LSU averaged over five.

Ole Miss will average over five to keep this close, but Young and the Alabama offense will come through with two late drives to keep the season from sliding into the abyss.

Alabama vs Ole Miss Game Preview

Why Ole Miss Will Win

The offense can keep up.

Alabama’s got the talent on defense to turn the lights out on just about anyone, but Miami – yes, Miami – Mercer, and Southern Miss don’t have high-powered attacks. Florida was able to bruise and batter its way to making the Bama game interesting in the second half, but it doesn’t have a high-powered passing attack.

Here comes Ole Miss with Matt Corral and company with a dominant 3-0 start with everything clicking. The attack came up with 647 yards in last year’s 63-48 loss to Bama – no one else in 2020 got to 470 – and this time around there’s a D to go along with that O.

At least, there’s a slightly improved D.

This Rebel defense isn’t going to be a brick wall at any point, but it’s athletic, experience, and far less cringe-worthy than the one that give up yards and points by the bucketload in 2020.

There’s more of a pass rush so far this season, the run D is getting gouged just a little bit instead of in monster chunks, and there might be just enough to hold serve so Corral and the offense can push a pass defense that’s been okay, but hasn’t been tested.

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Alabama Will Win

Louisville, Austin Peay, Tulane.

Let’s do a little bit of roll slowing here, America.

Ole Miss has a great team with an outstanding offense and a big-time playmaker of a quarterback. It also has a head coach who should and would be the new head man at USC, but won’t be because … well, because.

Yeah, the team has looked and played great, and yeah, there hasn’t been a problem so far, but the team has also taken target practice against a few middleweights and an FCSer.

Ole Miss has been able to get the O going partly because the running game has been unstoppable – that’s not going to work this week. Bama still has to prove that the glitch from the Florida game has been fixed, but just assume that the defensive side isn’t going to meltdown in the second half like it did in Gainesville.

Bama hasn’t been razor sharp so far – there’s a reason Nick Saban has been ranting and raving about a team that’s seemingly the best in college football – but Ole Miss has a bad habit of getting flagged and flagged some more, the O line is a wee bit leaky in pass protection, and for all the good things the attack does, it hasn’t been sharp on third downs.

Ole Miss has to be perfect, and it won’t be.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

There are two ways this can go.

Alabama decides enough is enough and comes out roaring with a dominant effort to show that it really and truly is the No. 1 team in the country, or this is a firefight of epic proportions that comes down to who has the ball last.

Can Corral pull a Johnny Manziel and take the Heisman with a historic performance with the sports world watching?

Or will this be the moment that Bryce Young sets the tone for the rest of the season for both the Heisman and Alabama?

Both quarterbacks will be great, both offenses will be great, but one defense will come through when it needs to.

Why Alabama Will Win

He’s not in any sort of Heisman discussion quite yet, and he’s certainly not getting the attention of Mississippi State’s KJ Costello or Florida’s Kyle Trask in the SEC, but Mac Jones has been brilliant.

He’s only leading the nation in passing efficiency.

It helps to have a ridiculous receiving corps to work with, he’s been the one who’s making the whole O go by hitting 75% of his passes for 684 yards and six touchdowns with just the one pick last week against Texas A&M.

Ole Miss is dead last in the SEC in total defense, giving up 446 yards through the air to Florida and 408 rushing yards to Kentucky. Bama can move the ball however it wants to. However …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Ole Miss Will Win

The Crimson Tide secondary has been shaky. To be fair, the yards and numbers have come after the outcomes were well in hand, but this is Alabama – you play a full four quarters, or The Process isn’t working.

Missouri was done and almost buried, but it threw enough late to at least make the final score a cosmetically-better 38-19. It was the same thing with Texas A&M’s Kellen Mond, who threw for 335 yards and three touchdowns, but Bama had it won.

Welcome to Matt Corral, who’s third in the nation in passing efficiency.

He might have to keep throwing because of a defense that’s letting offenses roll at will, but he’s hitting 77% of his passes for 715 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 12 yards per throw.

The line is giving him time, the O is working at a good pace, and the big plays down the field are coming. He’ll keep pressing for 60 minutes.

What’s Going To Happen

And here we go. It’s Lane Kiffin vs. Nick Saban, but the big dog has the talent on his side of the field.

It’s not like both coaching staffs don’t go full out every week, but this one is a wee bit different. Both offenses will work, both passing games will be great, and there will be a moment when it looks like the Rebels might be able to do something special, and then the talent will take over.
