Report: SEC announces plans for 2020 CFB season

The SEC has officially announced how it plans to proceed with the 2020 college football season.

The SEC has officially announced how it plans to proceed with the 2020 college football season.

On Thursday, Ross Dellenger of broke the news via his Twitter account that SEC would be going to a 10-game, conference-only schedule that would start on Sept. 26.

The news isn’t overly shocking considering where things have been trending over the last 24 hours, but it does call into question what other conferences will do. Just yesterday, the ACC announced it would be going to a 10+1 model with 10 conference games and one out-of-conference opponent.

While that might remain part of the plan, several in-state rivalries between the ACC and SEC, particularly Florida-Florida State, South Carolina-Clemson, Kentucky-Louisville and Georgia-Georgia Tech, will no longer be taking place.

Alabama football countdown: 40 days until kickoff

We are only 40 days from Alabama football kicking off its season. With the cancelled USC game, we’re just not sure who the opponent with be.

Alabama’s opening week game against the USC Trojans at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, has been cancelled after the Pac-12 announced its teams would play a conference-only schedule in 2020.

Yes, that was unfortunate news, and, yes, that means the Crimson Tide is looking for a new opponent to open its season on Sept. 5, but, as of right now, that is still the target date to open the season. Until that changes, we’ll continue the countdown to kickoff.

With it now being July 27, we are officially 40 days away from the start!

Joshua McMillon, a sixth-year inside linebacker, currently wears the No. 40 for Alabama. Prior to the 2019 season, McMillon was a reserve and mostly played on special teams.

When he was finally able to work his way atop the depth chart, a knee injury ended his season before it could even get started. Now, McMillon will have a tougher road to a starting spot, but he should still see action for the Crimson Tide this season.

Either way, he experience in the system and the program will be important to the team.

Five-star true freshman Chris Braswell, an outside linebacker from Baltimore (Md.), will wear the No. 41 for Alabama this upcoming season.

The last notable player to wear the number, however, is another edge player: former Tide standout Courtney Upshaw. After a successful career in Tuscaloosa, Upshaw ended up being a second-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens before winning a Super Bowl and spending time with the Atlanta Falcons (2016-17) and New York Jets (2018).

While they’re different players, the Alabama coaching staff has to be hoping that Braswell can become as impactful — or maybe more impactful — as Upshaw during his time at Alabama.

Two Alabama players currently wear the No. 42. The first is walk-on wide receiver Sam Reed, a sophomore out of Mountain Brook (Ala.). The other is reserve linebacker and key special teams player Jaylen Moody.

Moody, now a junior, has seen action in every game during his career with the Tide on special teams. This past season, he finished second on the team in special teams tackles with five.

At this time, there isn’t currently anyone wearing the No. 43 for Alabama. In fact, it’s been awhile since a scholarship player wore the number. Former outside linebacker VanDarius Cowan wore it for a short period, but prior to Cowan, the most notable player to wear it was Cade Foster.

There’s also the iconic character named Forrest Gump who rocked the No. 44 for the Crimson Tide. Many consider Gump to be the best return man in cinema history, but we’ll let you be the judge.
