We are only 45 days away from ALABAMA FOOTBALL!!

The return of college football is quickly approaching, folks. After yet another national championship winning season, Nick Saban and company will be looking for a repeat performance in 2021.

Despite key losses, the Crimson Tide is well positioned to do just that.

The opening week matchup is against the Miami Hurricanes in Atlanta, Ga. set for Sept. 4. And with it now being July 21, we are now only 45 days away from the start of the season!

True freshman tight end Robbie Ouzts, a three-star prospect out of Rock Hill, S.C., is now wearing the No. 45 for Alabama.

With Jahleel Billingsley and Cameron Latu topping the depth chart, it’s unlikely that we see significant contributions from Ouzts in Year 1, but he’s an excellent development prospect at the tight end position.

The most notable player to ever wear the No. 45 during the Saban era is none other than former offensive Swiss Army knife Jalston Fowler. After coming to Tuscaloosa as a running back out of Vigor down in Mobile, Fowler played mostly fullback. But he also had the ability to take carries and even play some move tight end.

Fowler was at Alabama from 2010 to 2014.

Junior defensive lineman Byron Young is wearing the No. 47 for Alabama, and has for the last two seasons. The Laurel, Miss. native became a part of the rotation as true freshman, even getting five starts.

That success continued into 2020, as Young finished with with career-highs in tackles (26) and tackles for loss (5.5). In two seasons, he’s had 49 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks, making him a valuable part of the Tide’s deep rotation along their defensive front.

Young isn’t the only one to wear the number during the Saban era though. We’ve also seen former outside linebacker Xzavier Dickson wear it as well. We also can’t forget the original No. 47 during the Saban era, Ezekiel Knight.

Phidarian Mathis has been wearing the No. 48 for Alabama over the last four seasons. Now entering his redshirt senior year, the 6-foot-4, 312-pound defensive lineman out of Wisner, La. is one of the most experienced players up front for the Crimson Tide.

Over the last three seasons, he’s played in 32 games, racking up 76 total tackles, 5.5 of them for a loss and 1.5 sacks to go along with three pass deflections, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Alabama is deep along the defensive line, but Mathis will be relied on heavily, maybe even as a potential starter. Expect increases to those career totals as he finishes off a solid career in Tuscaloosa.

This will be the third season that now redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Braylen Ingraham has worn the No. 52 for Alabama. After spending his first couple of seasons working in a limited, rotational role, the 6-foot-4, 289-pounder is now looking to move into a more consistent role.

He’ll be facing steep competition along the Crimson Tide’s defensive front, however. As a former four-star, top-200 prospect, Ingraham has the talent to compete though.

Another player who has worn the number during the Saban era is former offensive lineman Alfred McCullough out of Athens High School in north Alabama. He wore it from 2008-12.

No one is wearing the No. 53 for Alabama this season. Last year, it was walk-on linebacker Matthew Barnhill from Woodway, Texas, but he is no longer listed on the roster.

The No. 53 hasn’t been a popular number to wear — at least not during the Saban era. Former outside linebacker/defensive end Anthony Orr wore the number from 2009-14, but he’s been the only scholarship player to wear it.

Walk-on Kyle Flood Jr., a sophomore linebacker Middlesex, N.J., is currently wearing the No. 54 for Alabama. The last scholarship player to wear the number was none other than Dalvin Tomlinson, who is one of the most underrated players during the Saban era.

No, Tomlinson didn’t have the name recognition that other defensive linemen such as Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne, A’Shawn Robinson or Quinnen Williams have had in recent years, but he was a rock solid run defender who wasn’t a liability on passing downs.

After being a second-round pick by the New York Giants back in 2017, Tomlinson went on to have a very successful four-year stretch with the franchise. That success was rewarded this offseason with him signing a two-year, $22 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings.

The No. 55 is currently being worn by redshirt junior offensive lineman Emil Ekiyor Jr. and has been for the past three seasons.

After being a highly-rated four-star prospect coming out of Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, the 6-foot-3, 324-pound guard/center waited his turn to emerge as a full-time starter. That finally happened in 2020, and Ekiyor was rock solid stepping into the starting job at right guard.

Now he’ll look to build off that success in 2021, and he’s already getting some preseason recognition heading into Year 4.

Sophomore offensive lineman Seth McLaughlin out of Buford, Ga. currently wears the No. 56 for Alabama. After being a three-star prospect coming out of high school, McLaughlin didn’t see much action during his first season in Tuscaloosa.

He will add to the depth on the interior this upcoming season, however, including at center and guard.

The most notable player to wear the No. 56 during the Saban era is former outside linebacker Tim Williams. After only 1.5 sacks over his first two seasons, he went on to have 18.5 sacks over his last two en route to being a third-round NFL draft pick back 2017.

At this time, no one is wearing the No. 57. As a true freshman in 2020, Javion Cohen wore it, but the second-year offensive lineman switched to the No. 70 after the departure of Alex Leatherwood to the NFL.

The most notable name to ever wear the number — at least during the Saban era — is none other than former defensive lineman Marcell Dareus. He’s one of the all-time best players at his position in Alabama history, and that helped him become a top-3 pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

He then proceeded to spend nine season in the NFL from 2011 to 2019. His first 6.5 seasons were with the team that drafted him, the Buffalo Bills, while his spent 2.5 seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He is currently a free agent.
