See what Derrick Henry had to say in response to concerns over his age.
Former Alabama Crimson Tide football running back Derrick Henry has been one of the best ball carriers in the NFL for nearly a decade. Now, he heads into the 2024 season as one of the oldest at 30 years old.
Following an eight-year career with the Tennessee Titans that consisted of enough accolades to warrant a trip to the Hall of Fame, Henry is preparing to play for a new team for the first time in his professional football journey. He joined the Baltimore Ravens over the offseason as a free agent.
While his signing was one of the most noteworthy moves of the offseason, fans have been weary as to what role he will play in the offense. Headlined by two-time MVP-winning quarterback Lamar Jackson, the Baltimore backfield is one of the most versatile in the league. However, many are still unsure as to if Henry, given his age and years of experience, will be able to be a three-down back who can play at the level he has been throughout his career.
Recently, Henry addressed these concerns by arguing that his performance will speak for itself.
“That’s always going to be said when a running back gets up in age, the stigma on the position,” Henry said. “But I just focus on me being healthy, doing my job when I’m here and then let my play speak for my age.”
These same qualms by fans loomed in 2023, but Henry still managed to amass 1,167 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. Though everyone’s career will end at some point, Henry hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down.

The former Crimson Tide RB spent eight seasons in the NFL.
Former Alabama Crimson Tide running back Kenyan Drake took to social media today to officially announce his retirement from the NFL. He began his professional career in 2016 after spending four years in Tuscaloosa.
Drake, joined the Crimson Tide as a member of the 2012 recruiting class. While in college, he won a BCS national championship in 2012 as a true freshman and finished his collegiate career in 2015 with a College Football Playoff national championship.
Drafted in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins, Drake was a member of seven franchises across the league. His most memorable moment in the league was the “Miracle in Miami,” when he ran the ball 52 yards off of a lateral to win a regular season game against the New England Patriots as time expired.
His career concludes with a total of 869 carries for 3,866 yards and 33 rushing touchdowns. He also had 1,655 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns.
Derrick Henry may be a veteran, but he’s still one of the top running backs in the NFL.
For fans of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team, it feels like just yesterday Derrick Henry was hoisting the Heisman Trophy. Sorry to burst your bubble, but that moment was nearly a decade ago. Despite being a veteran in the NFL, Henry still ranks as one of the best running backs in the league.
After spending eight years with the Tennessee Titans, where he built up a Hall of Fame-worthy career, Henry is just now moving on to the next chapter of his NFL journey. Over the 2024 offseason, Henry signed with the Baltimore Ravens, where he will join fellow Heisman Trophy recipient and MVP Award winner Lamar Jackson.
Running backs in the NFL are often overlooked and underpaid, as it is a position that’s viewed by many to be one of the most damaging on a player’s body. Well, Henry has suffered injuries in the past, but his ability to stay in great shape and at the top of his game is what has made him one of the most valuable offensive players in recent history.
Recently, ESPN heard from anonymous NFL coaches and executives (subscription required) and Henry was rated at the ninth-best running back in the league.
“He’s a warrior,” a veteran NFL coach said. “Just keeps himself in such good physical conditioning with offseason workouts. I don’t see him slowing down over the next two years. He’s a volume back with great size, breaks tackles, has deceptive speed and no one’s really catching him if he gets going. I don’t think he’s lost a step.”
Though he has to compete with younger running backs all across the NFL, Henry remains one of the strongest, most poised running backs of them all. The Ravens landing Henry was a massive move in the right direction for the franchise, as they now have one of the strongest, fastest, most elusive backfields in the game.

Former Alabama safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is one of the best in the NFL, but is no longer No. 1 in the league.
Former Alabama Crimson Tide football safety Minkah Fitzpatrick has been a star in the NFL since he was drafted in the first round of the 2018 draft by the Miami Dolphins. His talents were only put on full display for the nation to marvel at after he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019.
For a while, Fitzpatrick’s abilities led many fans and experts to praise him as the top safety, and overall defensive back, in the entire league.
The ranking, done by Jared Dubin of CBS Sports has Kyle Hamilton of the Baltimore Ravens and Antoine Winfield Jr. of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at No. 2 and No. 1, respectively. As for Fitzpatrick, Dubin points to time missed in 2023 for the reason he has fallen in the rankings.
“This next group is on a different level than most other safeties. Even with Fitzpatrick missing some time last year, he still found a way to make an impact at all three levels of the defense. After beginning his career as a corner, he still has some of the best coverage abilities of any safety, and he is a turnover-forcing machine both deep down the field and close to the line of scrimmage.”
Fitzpatrick and the Steelers are preparing for the upcoming regular season, which is set to begin in just over a month. Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow former Alabama players in the NFL, as well as all things Alabama football news as the 2024 offseason progresses.

Former Alabama WR Jameson Williams is in a great position to dominate the league with the Detroit Lions.
Former Alabama Crimson Tide football wide receiver Jameson Williams began his NFL career on the sidelines. He was selected No. 12 overall in the 2022 draft by the Detroit Lions, but was still recovering from a torn ACL that he suffered in the national championship game just a few months prior.
Though he returned to action late in 2022, he would be sidelined again due to a suspension handed down by the league before the start of the 2023 season.
In his two seasons with the Lions, he’s appeared in 18 games, caught a total of 25 passes for 395 yards and three receiving touchdowns. He’s also had a handful of rushing attempts, one of which was for a touchdown.
Williams has the talent and ability to be a star in the NFL. Detroit is now one of the top teams in the league with a roster that features a combination of veterans and young players. If Williams can stay on the field, he’ll be in one of the best positions to be a breakout star in 2024, as Jeff Risdon of the Lions Wire details.
“The stage is set for “Jamo” to emerge as one of the NFL’s most explosive receivers in 2024. After an injury-delayed rookie season and a gambling suspension that inhibited Year 2, Williams enters his third season in Detroit free of distractions and ready to fly. He’s the No. 2 wideout now with the departure of vet Josh Reynolds, and his game-breaking speed makes Williams a great weapon. During spring sessions, Williams showed a much better grasp of route running and overall attention to detail. Williams might not be a high-volume receiver and the drop issue isn’t likely to abate, but he could still approach 1,000 receiving yards and threaten double-digit touchdowns.”
Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Jameson Williams and other former Alabama stars in the NFL as the 2024 offseason progresses.

Former Alabama stars continue to shine in the NFL, and 3 former Tide DBs are among the best in the league.
The Alabama Crimson Tide football program is well-represented in the NFL, with many players being household names and fan favorites due to their high level of play. As the 2024 season approaches, positional rankings continue to prove that Alabama produces some of the best players in the league.
Jared Dubin of CBS Sports recently revealed the top 20 cornerbacks in the NFL ahead of the 2024 regular season. While the list is full of talented players from colleges all across the nation, the Crimson Tide landed three former standouts in the top 20.
Former Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs has been stellar in his time with the Dallas Cowboys. He was selected in the second round of the 2020 draft and has made the most of his time in the league. He led the NFL in interceptions in 2021 and is already a two-time Pro Bowl CB.
“Diggs of course is coming off a torn ACL, and might not be at the peak of his powers in 2024,” writes Dubin When last we saw him, though, he had rebounding from being a Bland-esque boom-bust corner into someone who was much more solid in coverage, with his interception total declining but his seeming burnability also going by the wayside. He’s always going to take chances to try to get his hands on the ball, but he had found the proper balance prior to his injury, and should be able to recapture it once back on the field.”
No. 10 – Marlon Humphrey
Marlon Humphrey is a veteran in the league and has been a key contributor for the Baltimore Ravens since the team drafted him in the first round in 2017.
“Injuries have kept Humphrey from being at the top of his game in several recent seasons, and yet he has still allowed a passer rating over 80 in just two of his seven NFL seasons, and he’s been below 72 in each of the last two years, with only one touchdown allowed against four interceptions. His role in Baltimore changes often, and he can just do absolutely whatever the defensive coordinator asks of him. A truly marvelous player.”
No. 2 – Patrick Surtain II
Former Alabama standout cornerback Patrick Surtain II was drafted ninth overall by the Denver Broncos in 2021 and has been a star in the league since his rookie season. Though the Broncos have not been among he league’s best, Surtain is nonetheless one of the biggest overall stars in the NFL due to his consistent high level of play.
“Surtain was disappointed with his own play in 2024, and while it was indeed a down year by his standards, the by his standards part of that sentence is key. He remains a prototype modern corner with the size, speed, length, and agility to cover anyone, anywhere, at any time. He has a chance to challenge for the top spot in any given season.”

Former No. 1 overall pick QB Bryce Young is expected to be more urgent, comfortable and confident in his second NFL season.
Former Alabama Crimson Tide Bryce Young had a difficult time transitioning to the NFL in his rookie season. The 2023 NFL draft’s first overall selection went from being a Heisman Trophy winner and leader of an elite team, to fighting for wins in the relatively weak NFC East division.
The Carolina Panthers chose Young No. 1 overall instead of Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback C.J. Stroud. Last season, Stroud put together a string of impressive performances for the Houston Texans and he is now being praised as one of the best passers in the league. Young will look to establish himself alongside Stroud as one of the NFL’s best young quarterbacks in 2024.
Recently, veteran wide receiver, Adam Thielen, joined the Rich Eisen Show and discussed the changes he’s seen in Young as he prepares for his second season in the NFL.
Three words Thielen used to describe the difference in Young: urgent, confident, comfortable.
In the interview, Thielen describes what he remembers from his rookie season in the league, and relates it to Young’s experience. Having found his footing and a full season under his belt, it’s up to Young to perform at a high level without the excuse of being an inexperienced starting quarterback at the highest level of football.
Last season, Young completed 59.8% of his passes for 2,877 yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He will look to significantly improve in his sophomore season.
Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Young and other former Alabama players in the NFL, as well as Alabama football news as the 2024 offseason progresses.

No other college football program produces running backs like the Alabama Crimson Tide. This is a fact.
Every year, the annual NFL draft allows for players from programs all across the nation to have their names called, and their professional football journey begin. There is one program, however, that seems to produce more NFL talent than the rest: the Alabama Crimson Tide.
While Alabama has been able to send a player at every position to the NFL under former head coach Nick Saban, the program has done an exceptional job at producing high-caliber running backs who succeed at the professional level.
By constantly sending running backs, among other positions, to the league, the Crimson Tide has made the argument that it is ‘RBU’ for being the program that consistently developing running backs that have successful and impactful careers in the NFL.
A recent ranking of the top-20 running backs in the NFL for the 2024 season by Garrett Podell of CBS Sports features three former Alabama running backs inside the top 10, the most of any single collegiate program.
No. 9 – Josh Jacobs
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports
On this list, Josh Jacobs ranks No. 9 in the league. After being drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders and spending his entire young career with the franchise, Jacobs is about to begin a new chapter. In the 2024 offseason, Jacobs signed with the Green Bay Packers and will be the team’s lead ball carrier.
No. 8 – Jahmyr Gibbs
Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports
Former Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs had a phenomenal rookie season with the Detroit Lions and he is expected to step it up in his sophomore NFL season.
“He became just the eighth rookie in the 21st century to total more than 900 rushing yards (945) and at least 10 rushing touchdowns (10) while averaging at least five yards a carry (5.2, third most in the NFL among running backs in 2023, on 182 carries),” writes Podell. “The company Gibbs keeps with his rookie year production is among some of the NFL’s best when it comes to Pro Bowl running backs.”
No. 2 – Derrick Henry
Syndication: The Tennessean
Former Alabama Heisman-winning running back Derrick Henry had a Hall of Fame-worthy career with the Tennessee Titans, but he will now be the featured running back for the Baltimore Ravens after making the move as a free agent during the 2024 offseason.
“Alongside reigning NFL MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson in the Baltimore Ravens backfield, Henry should have much wider running lanes to work with since the Ravens’ registered a Pro Football Focus run-blocking grade of 67.9, the eighth best in the league,” writes Podell. “That’s a considerable upgrade from the Titans’ 60.2 PFF run-blocking grade, which ranked 17th in the NFL. King Henry is set up to rule once again in 2024.”
There’s no telling if these stars will remain in the top 10 as the 2024 NFL regular season goes on, but there’s also a chance other former Alabama football standout running backs will enter the list, as well.

Former Alabama Crimson Tide football star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is currently negotiating with the Miami Dolphins. Both parties are looking to find the sweet spot for a massive multi-year deal with the southpaw from Hawaii before the start of the 2024 season.
Tagovailoa led the NFL in passing yards last season and has worked to reshape his body this offseason to improve his mobility. While maintaining the strength and physicality needed to withstand a long and grueling 17-game regular season.
Tagovailoa was recently named as a “dark horse” for the 2024 NFL MVP by Judy Battista, senior national correspondent for NFL.com.
Battista would speak to the necessary steps Tua would need to take to be in the MVP conversation at the end of the season.
If Tagovailoa can manage the delicate balancing act between being mobile and being healthy while still delivering the ball to two of the best receivers in the game, the numbers should get him back in the mix for the highest playing honor. For him to stay in the conversation, though, the Dolphins will have to avoid the late-season scoring difficulties that ultimately doomed them in ’23.
Injuries plagued Tagovailoa early on in his NFL career but he has now proven that when healthy, he is one of the premier QBs in the league. As Battista pointed out, finding that physical balance so that he can put on display all of his abilities will be the key for the young star.
Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Tua and the other former Alabama football stars now in the NFL.
