Where does Oklahoma’s next opponent rank in US LBM Coaches Poll?

How high did Oklahoma’s next opponent, the Alabama Crimson Tide, climb in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll?

The Oklahoma Sooners have just two games remaining in the 2024 college football season. Their next opponent, the Alabama Crimson Tide, moved up to No. 7 in the nation in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll after week 12.

The Sooners will face the Crimson Tide next Saturday night on ABC.

Alabama has been playing good football lately, outscoring their opponents 128-20 since losing to Tennessee a month ago. That includes blowout wins over Missouri and LSU, who were considered top 25 teams at the time.

Oklahoma’s last opponent, the LSU Tigers, fell out of the top 25 after their 27-16 loss to Ole Miss.

The top of the coaches poll remained the same as Oregon maintained their unanimous spot in the coaches poll, earning all 55 first-place votes. Ohio State is No. 2, followed by Texas at No. 3. The first change comes at No. 4 after Tennessee’s loss to Georgia. Penn State is the new No. 4 team, followed by the undefeated Indiana Hoosiers at No. 5. Notre Dame, Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, and Miami fill out the top 10.

With just a couple weeks left in the regular season, the College Football Playoff favorites are starting to separate themselves from the pack. It will be a furious finish to the end of the season as teams attempt to position themselves for conference title games or at least an at-large playoff spot.

The Oklahoma Sooners are hoping to close the season on a high note and earn bowl eligibility with games against Alabama and LSU. That starts next week with a matchup against the No. 7 Alabama Crimson Tide.

SEC tiebreaker scenarios favor Texas vs. Alabama championship game

Texas Longhorns vs. Alabama Crimson Tide now most likely SEC Championship Game matchup as Tennessee, LSU losses impact tiebreaker scenarios.

Much of the week has been spent pouring over SEC tiebreaker rules and trying to apply them to the season’s remaining regular season games. Before Saturday’s slate of games, one very realistic scenario had an eight-team first place SEC tie going down. Does a five-way tie change much?

Going into today’s action, if every SEC favorite won over the next three weeks and Arkansas beats Missouri, it would be LSU is in the SEC Championship Game vs. the winner of Texas and A&M.

That won’t happen now. LSU laid another huge egg in Gainesville in a 27-16 loss to the Gators. This was LSU’s third loss in a row, third conference loss and fourth loss on the season. The Tigers are out of any consideration for the postseason beyond bowl games.

While LSU’s loss clears up some of the SEC playoff picture, Georgia’s win over Tennessee actually muddles it a little more.

A Tennessee win would have basically eliminated the Georgia Bulldogs and given the Vols a very clear path to the SEC championship game. Instead, Georgia’s 31-17 win over Tennessee leaves the ‘Dawgs alive for the SEC title game. The Vols join the group with two losses.

The SEC teams with two losses are Georgia, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Alabama. There are two teams with only one SEC loss — Texas and Texas A&M.

Obviously, the Horns and Aggies play each other so it is only possible for one team to end the season with one SEC loss. There could be zero one-loss teams since Texas and A&M each have a conference game to play before facing each other Thanksgiving weekend. (Trap game alert!)

None of the two-loss teams play each other over the next couple of weeks in conference. In fact, Georgia is actually done with its conference schedule.

Unless there’s a major upset, there would a single one-loss team and five two-loss teams. The two-loss teams will be subject to the SEC tiebreaker rules to produce a champ.

Since Texas is favored in both of its final two games, let’s assume the Longhorns win out and make it to Atlanta. (Obviously, there is much work to do)

SEC tiebreaker rules:

  1. Head-to-head competition among the tied teams
  2. Record vs. common conference opponents
  3. Record against the high-place opponent among the tied teams
  4. Cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents

SEC common opponents:

There are too many teams to apply head-to-head. For the second tiebreaker, if applied to the five two-loss teams, the records would be Ole Miss (1-0), Alabama (1-1), Tennessee (1-1), Georgia (1-2) and Texas A&M (0-0).

  • Alabama: beat Georgia but lost to Tennessee
  • Georgia: beat Tennessee but lost to Ole Miss and Alabama
  • Ole Miss: beat Georgia
  • Tennessee: beat Alabama but lost to Georgia
  • Texas A&M: hasn’t played any of the other two-loss tied teams

Future SEC Opponents:

  • Alabama: Oklahoma (Away), Auburn (Home)
  • Georgia: Done
  • Ole Miss: Florida (Away), Mississippi State (Home)
  • Tennessee: Vanderbilt (Away)
  • Texas A&M: Auburn (Away), Texas (Home)

There is no round robin or common opponent for all five teams.

Cumulative conference winning percentage:

That means the deciding tiebreaker would be cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents for the five tied teams. Alabama currently leads those percentages.

  1. Alabama (27-26, .509)
  2. Georgia (23-28, .451)
  3. Texas A&M (23-29, .442)
  4. Ole Miss (22-33, .400)
  5. Tennessee (21-32, .396)

Most Likely SEC Championship Matchup:

Under those circumstances, the SEC championship game opponents would be Texas and Alabama.

But the percentages could change. If Mississippi State upsets Mizzou next week it could actually change a lot. And as we’ve seen, upsets do happen. This entire model could be thrown out by next Saturday night.

Kickoff time, TV information announced for Oklahoma-Alabama

Oklahoma will host Alabama under the lights in their final home game of the season.

The Oklahoma Sooners will play their penultimate game of the 2024 season next week, after their upcoming bye week. With OU fielding their worst team since the John Blake years in the late 1990s, one might hope that the Sooners could go quietly about their business of losing and avoid the spotlight, before the offseason.

However, that won’t be the case. OU’s home finale will come against Alabama on Owen Field, and the [autotag]SEC[/autotag] has decided to put the game in primetime.

It’ll be a 6:30 p.m. kickoff in Norman for the Sooners and the Crimson Tide on Saturday November 23rd, and the game will broadcast on ABC in front of a nationally-televised audience.

It’s another bad break in a season full of them for Oklahoma, as the entire country will be able to tune in to watch [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] against a red hot Alabama Crimson Tide.

At the very least, it’ll be one final opportunity for seniors like [autotag]Danny Stutsman[/autotag] and [autotag]Billy Bowman[/autotag] to play in their home stadium. Both players deserved better than what they got this season, but hopefully they will be celebrated one last time at home.

Oklahoma’s next opponent moves into top 10 of US LBM Coaches Poll

The Oklahoma Sooners have a tough couple of games to finish the season. Where do their opponents rank in latest US LBM Coaches Poll?

The Oklahoma Sooners have a bye week to lick their wounds from a disappointing finish in their loss to the Missouri Tigers. But that’s the only reprieve they’ll get over the final three weeks of the regular season.

Coming after the bye, the Sooners will host a red-hot Alabama Crimson Tide team that has absolutely dominated their last two opponents. In their last two games, Alabama beat Missouri and LSU, a pair of top 25 opponents, with a combined score of 76-13.

That’s not an encouraging sign for an offense that’s struggled in SEC play and a defense that’s struggled in the second half of their last two games against Ole Miss and Mizzou.

After the Tide blew out LSU, Alabama moved up to No. 9 in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll. They’re back in the hunt for a College Football Playoff berth.

LSU, who suffered their third loss of the season, and Oklahoma’s opponent in the regular season finale fell to No. 22 in the nation.

After a record-setting day for former Sooner quarterback Dillon Gabriel, the Oregon Ducks are now the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation, earning every first-place vote from the coaches. That’s adding insult to injury as Dillon Gabriel and a coach rumored to be connected to the team after the departure of Lincoln Riley, Dan Lanning, look like the best team in the country after 11 weeks.

Ohio State moved back into the No. 2 spot this week. Their only loss on the season came by one point to the Ducks in Eugene. The Texas Longhorns are at No. 3 after their rout of Florida, followed by Tennessee at No. 4, and Penn State at No. 5.

In addition to Oregon, there are three other undefeated teams in the poll. Indiana moved up to No. 6, BYU to No. 8, and Army’s incredible season continues as they moved up to No. 17 in the nation.

Where do Oklahoma’s final 3 opponents rank in latest US LBM Coaches Poll?

Where do Oklahoma Football’s final three opponents Missouri, Alabama, and LSU rank in latest US LBM Coaches Poll after week 10?

The Oklahoma Sooners sit at 5-4 on the season with three games to go. Three games to secure bowl eligibility. Three games to create some positive momentum heading into the offseason. Three games to find out what your squad is made of.

Coming off their 59-14 win over Maine, the Sooners will close the season with games at Missouri, home against Alabama following a bye, and at LSU to close this season.

It was a difficult stretch of games when the schedule was released months ago and it looks even more challenging given the Sooners issues, especially on offense.

Oklahoma will head on the road to take on Missouri this week. The Tigers are coming off a bye week and land at No. 22 in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll. They may be without starting quarterback Brady Cook, who injured his throwing hand in Mizzou’s loss to Alabama last Saturday. If Cook can’t play, Eli Drinkwitz will be forced to roll with Drew Pyne.

In five appearances this season, Pyne has completed 63.6% of his passes for 248 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. All three interceptions came last week against the Crimson Tide in relief.

The Sooners will welcome the Crimson Tide to Norman on Nov. 23. Alabama is still fighting for a playoff spot despite losses to Vanderbilt and Tennessee. They come in at No. 11 in the nation, moving up three spots in the latest coaches poll.

The LSU Tigers also moved up three spots in the poll to No. 13. They were on a bye this week and will take on Alabama in Baton Rouge this week in a key SEC battle.

Elsewhere in the poll, the Oregon Ducks remained No. 1 in the nation, securing 53 of a possible 54 first-place votes. Georgia was No. 2, followed by Ohio State, Miami, and Texas to round out the top five.

Where do Oklahoma’s remaining opponents rank in US LBM Coaches Poll after Week 9?

After week 9, where do Oklahoma’s remaining opponents rank in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll?

The road to bowl eligibility for the Oklahoma Sooners won’t be a smooth ride. Oklahoma will play FCS program Maine this week. Then they go on the road again to begin a four-week stretch against three top 25 programs in the US LBM Coaches Poll after Week 9.

Those teams aren’t all in the top 10 like they were several weeks ago, but the Sooners will face challenges over the final month of the season when they take on the Missouri Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, and LSU Tigers.

If the Sooners want to reach a bowl game, they’ll have to take care of business against a tough Maine team and then upset one of the three SEC teams remaining on the schedule.

That doesn’t look as daunting as it did a couple of weeks ago. Missouri lost 34-0 to Alabama on Saturday. It’s the second time they’ve been blown out by a ranked SEC team after suffering a huge loss to Texas A&M a few weeks ago. But at home, the Tigers will pose a challenge, especially if Brady Cook is available. Cook left in the first half yesterday after suffering a hand injury. After Missouri’s loss to Alabama, the Tigers fell to No. 23 in the nation.

Alabama hasn’t been the Alabama of old in 2024, but they were much better against Missouri. The Sooners will have an upset on their mind when they welcome the Crimson Tide to town after their second bye week.  Alabama moved up one spot to No. 14 after beating Missouri.

LSU has a very good offense, but the defense is still a work in progress. They were outscored 31-6 in the second half by Texas A&M, ending the Tigers six-game winning streak. LSU fell to No. 16 in the nation after the loss.

Elsewhere in the US LBM Coaches Poll, the Oregon Ducks took home 53 of the possible 54 first-place votes in the poll. The Ducks earned an emphatic 38-9  win over Illinois. [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] threw for 291 yards and had four total touchdowns in the win. Georgia is still the No. 2 after their bye week, followed by Penn State, Ohio State, and the Miami Hurricanes to round out the top five.

Oklahoma fallout from Sooners loss in weekly US LBM Coaches Poll

How far did the Oklahoma Sooners fall in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll following their loss to Texas?

The Oklahoma Sooners have fallen out of the US LBM Coaches Poll after their 34-3 loss to the Texas Longhorns on Saturday. Last week, the Sooners were considered the No. 16 team in the nation by the coaches. Oklahoma is the leading vote-getter, sitting just outside the top 25.

It’s a stark fall from grace for a Sooners program that has struggled to find an offensive identity six games into the season. After recording a first quarter field goal, the Sooners were held scoreless over the final three quarters and had just one trip to the red zone. That came in the final minute of the game when the Longhorns were in prevent mode and the Sooners still couldn’t find the end zone for the second time in three contests against the Longhorns in the Brent Venables era.

The lackluster offensive performance came against the No. 1 team in the nation, and the Longhorns strengthened their hold on the top spot, picking up 53 out of the possible 55 first-place votes after Ohio State’s loss to Oregon.

Saturday’s results set up a showdown of top four teams next weekend when the No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs travel to Austin to take on the No. 1 Texas Longhorns.

Just like last week, three of the top five spots are held by the Big Ten with Oregon moving up to No. 2 and receiving a pair of first-place votes. They’re followed by Penn State, who moved up after their win on the road over USC. Ohio State fell from No. 2 to No. 5 following their loss to Oregon.

The Oklahoma Sooners have a tough road ahead, with four teams ranked inside the top 16 remaining on the schedule.

After the Sooners play South Carolina this weekend in Norman, OU will go on the road to face No. 15 Ole Miss on Oct. 26. The Sooners then follow that with a trip to Columbia to face No. 16 Missouri on Nov. 9. Following their second bye week on Nov. 16, Oklahoma closes the season with No. 7 Alabama and No. 8 LSU.

With the limited offensive success Oklahoma has had this season, the Sooners are going to struggle to get to bowl eligibility in 2024.

Here’s a look at the full US LBM Coaches Poll.
