Tennessee vs Akron Game Preview

Why Akron Will Win

Joe Moorhead is a terrific head coach who’s doing what he can with an Akron team in need of a total rebuild.

The offense hasn’t been bad so far. The passing game is okay, the defense is forcing takeaways, and it’s taking advantage of its scoring opportunities.

Yeah, things aren’t going that great if you’re losing 52-0 – that’s what happened against Michigan State last week – and it took a push to get by Saint Francis, but the passing game should hit 200 yards on the Tennessee secondary and there should be two takeaways from the D to help the cause.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Tennessee Will Win

Akron is having a big problem on the offensive line.

There no running game whatsoever, the pass protection isn’t there – allowing nine sacks in two games – and it doesn’t help when you lose four fumbles like the team did last week against the Spartans.

Meanwhile, Tennessee is a machine.

Things aren’t perfect – the O could stand to be better on third downs, the secondary was hit hard by both Ball State and Pitt, and as always with the Josh Heupel attack, time of possession doesn’t really matter. However, Hendon Hooker and the passing game are going off, the ground game is more than good enough, and the defense is making up with its shortcomings with big plays.

Tennessee has generated five takeaways so far. Do that against Akron, and this gets really, really ugly.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

This is going to get really, really ugly.

Akron won’t be able to keep up with the Tennessee passing game and the line will struggle right away against the pass rush.

The Vols will get out to a hot start and cruise from there.

Alex Golesh provides ‘unique’ evaluation of Vols’ run game ahead of Week 3

Tennessee offensive coordinator Alex Golesh provides ‘unique’ evaluation of Vols’ run game ahead of Week 3.

No. 16 Tennessee (2-0) will host Akron (1-1) Saturday at Neyland Stadium in Week 3 (7 p.m. EDT, SEC Network+).

The Vols enter its Week 3 nonconference contest following a 34-27 overtime win at Pittsburgh.

Tennessee defeated Ball State, 59-10, in Week 1 at Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Alex Golesh met with media Tuesday and provided an evaluation of the Vols’ run game entering Week 3.

Golesh called Tennessee’s run game through two games “unique.”

“The first week against Ball State, we got something that we anticipated, but didn’t truly prepare for in terms of a total drop eight game,” Golesh said. “I thought we ran the ball pretty well. We got a bunch of guys in. I think we played five running backs in that game. We ran it pretty well minus the turnover on the fumble.

“This last week, we knew exactly what kind of game it was going to be in terms of what Pitt is defensively and how they are built. We knew it was going to be tough sledding running the ball. We also knew that the quarterback run game was going to be our best run game in terms of being able to actually have everybody up and forcibly run the ball. How Pitt is built, they are really, really sound. They are going to force you to throw the football. I think for what was presented, which is what we prepared for, I think we ran the ball okay. We put a ball on the ground in short yardage. That is two weeks in a row. That is beyond disappointing, and in a lot of ways, unacceptable. If I lose sleep about anything, it’s that. We can’t win games if we put the ball on the ground like that. We got away with one there, whether it was the football gods looking over us or maybe we are just that good of people. It turned out in our favor, but you can’t put the ball on the ground in tight games like that. I don’t know if you are asking for a letter grade, but I think it is a work in progress and is a huge point of emphasis for us. I think the offensive line is playing extremely well. We have some backs that we are confident with. We have to hang on to the football. It will just keep coming as the season goes.”

Michigan State vs Akron Game Preview

Why Akron Will Win

Break up the Zips.

New head coach Joe Moorhead knows how to get a team going in a hurry, and his team came though with a fun overtime win over St. Francis.

Don’t knock it – this is a program that won three games since the middle of 2018.

DJ Irons is a dangerous all-around quarterback, the offense is designed to spread the ball around a bit, and the defense is going to press a Michigan State secondary that was good in the opener against Western Michigan, but is still going to be tested.

There’s a strong chance the Spartans are looking ahead to Washington and Minnesota, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Michigan State Will Win

The Spartans might have fixed the glitch.

The combination of Jalen Berger and Jarek Broussard from the transfer portal looked strong against the Broncos, Payton Thorne hit several deep plays – even if he wasn’t exactly sharp – and most importantly to start the season, the pass defense wasn’t ripped to shreds.

It all started with a defensive front that didn’t give WMU QB Jack Salopek any time to work, and it showed as the secondary that had a disastrous 2021 got the job done against a dangerous offense.

Akron doesn’t have the weapons Western Michigan has and is about to have a long day trying to move the ball against this defensive front.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan State won’t have much of a problem putting this away early.

It was a bit of a slow start against Western Michigan, but the defense will keep Akron from moving the chains – expect at least five sacks – and the offensive balance will take over with even more coming from the running game this week.
