A.J. Storr did it again last night

This is starting to become commonplace for Wisconsin guard A.J. Storr.

The Badgers high-flying guard threw down yet another poster dunk on Thursday night, this time in a 78-66 win over Rutgers.

Storr finished the contest with 19 points on 8/15 shooting and 3/6 from three, while also adding seven rebounds two assists and a steal.

The future NBA draft pick was largely overshadowed by the surprising second-half explosion by Kamari McGee in his return to the lineup. But his solid night marked a 25th consecutive game of scoring in double figures, the longest streak for a Wisconsin Badger since Ethan Happ’s 42-game streak during the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

Wisconsin is back on the court Sunday afternoon in West Lafayette, Indiana against No. 3 Purdue. Greg Gard’s team will try to generate any momentum it can entering the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments.

Rutgers men’s basketball looking for second straight win over Wisconsin

Rutgers men’s basketball faces a big test this week at Wisconsin.

For the second time this season, Rutgers men’s basketball will face Wisconsin on Thursday night. Rutgers won the first meeting between these two teams in February 78-56. They will be looking to continue that success on the road.

Entering this matchup, Rutgers has just one win in their last five games. Their only win in that span came against Michigan on February 29. As they look to improve their record in conference play, Rutgers will need to limit AJ Storr.

Through 29 games, Storr has been Wisconsin’s best player offensively. The Rockford, Illinois native is averaging a team-high 16.1 points per game this season. In his last four games, Storr has scored 57 points and added 15 rebounds to his resume.

 

While Rutgers will have their hands full trying to stop the talented guard, they will be looking for Clifford Omoruyi to have a big game. In Rutgers’ last win, Omoruyi put together one of his best performances of the season. He scored 19 points and added 15 rebounds to his resume as Rutgers snapped a three-game losing streak.

This game also represents an opportunity for Rutgers to improve their road record. They are 3-8 away from Jersey Mike’s Arena. However, Wisconsin has been hard to beat at home, with a 13-3 record at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers won the game 74-70, improving to 18-9 on the season and 10-6 in Big Ten play. While the 1-5 skid to start February mostly dropped the team out of Big Ten contention, there is still a sliver of hope entering the final stretch.

It’s a good thing Wisconsin held on to beat Maryland, because otherwise Storr’s acrobatic dunk might’ve been forgotten. The win makes it easier to celebrate the play — one which made it as the No. 2 play on SportsCenter’s Top 10:

After a period of struggles in the gauntlet that is the Big Ten conference, Wisconsin basketball got back to winning ways on Tuesday. The Badgers took down Maryland 74-70 in a game that saw AJ Storr throw down one of the dunks of the season.

The Badgers used balanced scoring to defeat the Terrapins, with four of the five Wisconsin starters finishing in double figures. The Terps put together a late run, but in the end the Badgers held them off with clutch buckets from Max Klesmit. Tyler Wahl finished with a game-high 18 points in the conference win that lifted Wisconsin to 10-6 in the Big Ten and 18-9 overall.

Wisconsin basketball just dropped another gut-wrenching game, this one on the road at Iowa.

The loss drops the Badgers to 17-9 on the season and 9-6 in Big Ten play. Not only is the Big Ten title out of the equation, but the team’s NCAA Tournament seed is slipping by the day.

The loss is crushing for several reasons. First, it seemed as if the Badgers had turned a corner with the win over Ohio State. Second, it came on a last-second basket in overtime. Wisconsin had numerous chances to escape Iowa City with a win, and the team couldn’t get it done.

Rutgers men’s basketball looking to extend winning streak to three games

Rutgers basketball faces a tough opponent in Wisconsin.

On Saturday afternoon, Rutgers men’s basketball will be putting their winning streak on the line against Wisconsin. So far this month, Rutgers has gone 2-0 after a disappointing January. Against the No. 11 Badgers, they will have the chance to stun the college basketball world.

As Rutgers looks to pull off their biggest win of the season, they will have their hands full with AJ Storr and Steven Crowl. Through 23 games, Starr has set the tone offensively for the Badgers, averaging 16.5 points. Crowl has been a menace on the boards, averaging 7.5 rebounds a game.

Rutgers is 12-10 (4-7 Big Ten). Wisconsin stands at 16-7 (8-4 Big Ten).

 

For Wisconsin, stopping Mawot Mag and Jeremiah Williams will be crucial to victory. In his last two games, Mag has added 30 points to his resume and hauled in five rebounds. Williams has provided a spark since joining the team at mid-season. This talented duo has helped make Rutgers hard to stop.

While Rutgers will be playing the role of underdogs, they have looked like a different team this month. In their last two wins, they have been able to close out games against conference teams. That is something they struggled with prior.

Additionally, Rutgers will have home court advantage. They are 9-3 at Jersey Mike’s Arena this season and hungry for another Big Ten win.

Wisconsin fell just short of a signature win Sunday afternoon: No. 2 Purdue entered the Kohl Center and escaped with a 75-69 victory.

The Badgers were in it throughout, though always lacked the defining moment or run to take control.

The loss is the team’s second of the week against a Quad 1 opponent (Thursday at Nebraska). It’s a massive missed opportunity, too. Purdue holds a 1 1/2-game lead atop the Big Ten standings.

There’s a lot to say about the contest and what it means for the Badgers. First, here are our takeaways:

The No. 6 Wisconsin Badgers choked away a 19-point lead in a 80-72 loss to Nebraska in Lincoln last night. The loss drops Wisconsin to 16-5 on the season and 8-2 in Big Ten play, now 0.5 games behind Purdue for first place in the Big Ten standings.

Nebraska had been nearly perfect at home entering the contest, entering with a 13-1 overall home record and 5-0 in Big Ten play — even Purdue lost by 16 on the road in Lincoln. That context takes a bit of the sting off of the loss, but doesn’t explain the massive blown lead and horrid second half.

Regardless, the Badgers remain one of the top contenders in the conference and one of the best teams in the nation. This group is still on pace to be Greg Gard’s best offensive team since taking over as head coach in 2015-2016, arguably his deepest and maybe his best overall.

So, believe it or not, Wisconsin remains one of KenPom’s top teams in the Big Ten despite the loss. Here are those full power rankings, exactly halfway through the conference schedule:

What led to Wisconsin’s first season sweep of Michigan State since 2003-04? St. John’s transfer AJ Storr was the best player on the floor in each of the wins against the Spartans, and was at his best last night.

Storr has been a three-level scorer for the Badgers and has enough ways to create offense for himself and others where you can’t just key in on one aspect of his arsenal. Last night, the Badger wing knocked down a trio of triples, got to the rim with ease, and monitored in the midrange. He finished with a game-high 28 points on 9-17 from the field while also finding easy ones at the free-throw line.

Wisconsin basketball has one of the best offenses in the country

Wisconsin basketball continued its terrific stretch of play earlier this week with a 71-60 road win over Ohio State. The Badgers are alone atop the Big Ten at 4-0, and are now trending towards a spot in the top 10 of the AP Poll.

KenPom has ranked the Badgers higher than other services all season, it was early on this being one of the best teams in the country. But some of the KenPom numbers remain hard to believe after this 12-3 start.

Wisconsin is No. 11 overall in the metric with the No. 6 offensive efficiency, No. 28 defensive efficiency and the seventh-toughest strength of schedule. Now, the tempo numbers remain predictably slow. But this Badgers team is ranked as the sixth-best offense in the country, something we rarely can rarely say.

CBSSports’ Jon Rothstein thinks its the best offense of the Greg Gard era. It’s hard to disagree.
