Wisconsin star guard AJ Storr enters transfer portal

A big time Big Ten player has entered the transfer portal.

In recent Big Ten news, the Wisconsin Badgers have suffered a major loss via the transfer portal. On Thursday, star Badgers guard AJ Storr entered the transfer portal.

The 6-foot-7 guard, who just finished his sophomore season with the Badgers, averaged 16.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 0.9 assists this season, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors in the process.

This will be the second time Storr has entered the transfer portal in his career. The Illinois native originally began his career at St. John’s, where he earned Big East All-Freshman team honors in 2023. He then entered the portal last spring and chose the Badgers over programs such as UConn, Gonzaga, Creighton, Virginia, and others.

As a team, the Badgers were 22-14 this past season, including 11-9 in the Big Ten, finishing in sole possession of fifth place in the conference. The Badgers would make the NCAA Tournament as a five-seed but were knocked out in the first round by James Madison with a 72-61 defeat.

In two games against the Huskers this season, Storr had 38 points and 15 rebounds, including a 28-point effort on February 1, which led to an 80-72 win for the Huskers.

Big 12 powerhouse in contact with Badgers transfer guard

The Big 12’s Kansas Jayhawks are in contact with former Wisconsin guard A.J. Storr, according to a report from 247Sports’ Michael Swain.

Storr announced he was declaring for the 2024 NBA draft while maintaining his college eligibility. He entered the portal on Thursday, ensuring he would not be back in Madison for a second season.

The star guard averaged a team-high 16.8 points per game in his one season with Greg Gard’s squad at Wisconsin. A possible transfer would mean his third collegiate team in as many seasons, and seventh team in seven years dating to high school.

Storr will have no shortage of suitors if he decides to return to college.

BREAKING: Wisconsin star guard officially enters transfer portal

A.J. Storr will not be back with the Badgers next season

Wisconsin basketball star guard A.J. Storr entered the transfer portal on March 28.

Storr recently declared for the 2024 NBA draft while maintaining his college eligibility. He then covered the rest of the bases by entering the transfer portal, practically ensuring he will not be back with the Badgers in 2024-25.

The former St. John’s guard averaged 28.8 minutes, 16.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.6 steals in 2023-24. He was the engine of Wisconsin’s offense for much of the season, especially the team’s run to the final of the Big Ten Tournament.

If Storr does not enter the NBA draft, he will end up on his third college team in as many seasons.

Wisconsin has seen Storr, Connor Essegian, Gus Yalden and others enter the transfer portal. As a result, Greg Gard has scholarships to play with as he works to reload for 2024-25.

Wisconsin star guard A.J. Storr is declaring for the 2024 NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility, according to a post on his X account.

The news comes on the heels of Storr not committing to a second season with the Badgers after the team’s NCAA Tournament loss to James Madison.

The NBA hopeful would still be able to return to college if he isn’t satisfied with his draft projection. He would then have a decision to make about whether to return to Madison for another season, or play his third collegiate season elsewhere.

Storr is the second significant member of the 2023-24 Badgers who could be out the door, joining guard Connor Essegian who recently entered the transfer portal.

BREAKING: Fan-favorite Wisconsin Badgers guard enters transfer portal

BREAKING: Fan-favorite Wisconsin Badgers guard enters transfer portal

The Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball team’s season ended Friday night versus James Madison in the first round of March Madness, and guard Connor Essegian announced on Sunday that he will enter the transfer portal.

Essegian had an impressive freshman campaign in 2022-2023, averaging 11.7 points per game while hitting a freshman-record 69 3-pointers. However, playing time was hard to find for him this year.

The 6-foot-4 guard saw his average minutes drop from 27.4 to 7.3 minutes per game in 2023-2024. He averaged just 3.2 points per game. The emergence of transfer wing AJ Storr, plus Essegian’s shortcomings defensively were the driving factors in the stark change in usage.

The news came as a shock to Badgers fans. Essegian said 10 days ago he would return to Wisconsin.

A fan favorite in Madison, Essegian will likely look for an opportunity that provides him with a more direct path to meaningful minutes during his junior season.

Former Badgers basketball recruit enters transfer portal

Former Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, standout Kobe Johnson (USC) entered the portal Friday.

The first two days of March Madness are over and the Badgers men’s basketball team lost to James Madison in the round of 64, so their focus shifts to the 2024-2025 season.

The team’s attention will partially go toward the transfer portal. Former Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, standout Kobe Johnson (USC) entered the portal Friday.

Wisconsin never offered Johnson coming out of Nicolet High School in 2021 as a three-star athlete, but they hosted the 6-foot-6, 200-pound athlete for a visit.

Johnson averaged 10.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists in his third season with USC. With the future of AJ Storr in question for the Badgers, Johnson could be an intriguing player to take a look at in the portal for Greg Gard and his staff.

Report: Wisconsin G A.J. Storr doesn’t commit to second season with Badgers

Report: Wisconsin G A.J. Storr doesn’t commit to second season with Badgers

Wisconsin basketball’s 2023-24 season came to an end with a demoralizing 72-61 NCAA Tournament loss to James Madison Friday night.

The story was the Badgers’ struggles from the opening tip. James Madison showed up ready to play, Wisconsin did not.

One big piece of that was the struggles of  A.J. Storr. The dynamic guard finished with just 13 points on 5 of 14 from the field and 0 of 3 from 3-point range. His night embodied Wisconsin’s performance: inconsistent and lacking rhythm.

Storr’s future is now one of the team’s big questions entering 2024-25. Greg Gard is set to return the entire team aside from departing senior Tyler Wahl. But there is some thought out there that Storr could look to play elsewhere next season.

The Badgers guard was non-committal when speaking to reporters after the game, instead focusing on the team’s loss and the departure of Wahl.

Badger247’s Evan Flood writes that Storr said “I don’t really know right now” when asked about his options of returning to Wisconsin, entering the NBA draft or entering the transfer portal.

The former St. John’s transfer averaged 16.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 0.9 assists for the Badgers this season. His presence was badly needed after the team lacked a dynamic wing scorer during the 2022-23 season.

Gard is set to return Chucky Hepburn, John Blackwell and Max Klesmit while welcoming in top point guard Daniel Freitag this offseason. Storr would be welcomed back to compliment that rotation, but it sounds as if he may have a decision to make regarding his future.

Big Ten Notebook: Big Ten semifinals set after busy Friday

The Big Ten Tournament is rolling along.

For the Big Ten, Friday night was full of action as the Big Ten Tournament continued. Sixteen teams were fighting for the opportunity to play in the semifinals. However, the only four teams moving on will be IllinoisWisconsinPurdue, and Nebraska.

The closest game of the night was between Illinois and Ohio State. In this hard-fought battle, Illinois emerged with a 77-74 win, as Terrence Shannon Jr. had a big game with 28 points. The Fighting Illini also performed well in the paint and outrebounded Ohio State 44-40. They will face Wisconsin on Saturday.

In the matchup between Michigan State and Purdue, the Spartans nearly shocked the college basketball world in a 67-62 loss. Purdue outscored Michigan State 34-27 in the first half but was outscored 35-33 in the final 20 minutes. The Boilermakers were led by Zach Edey, who scored 29 points for the third-ranked team in the country. They will face Wisconsin who beat Northwestern on Friday.

Against the Wildcats, Wisconsin was on fire from beyond the arc. The Badgers shot 45.5 percent from three-point range, which allowed them to build an early lead. They were led by AJ Storr, who had a team-high 30 points. They also dominated close to the basket, outscoring Northwestern 28-16 in the paint.

The final game of the night ended with a 93-66 Nebraska win over Indiana. Nebraska thrived from beyond the arc, shooting 50 percent from three-point range. They were led offensively by Brice Williams who had 23 points, while only missing five shots.

Takeaways from Wisconsin’s stellar Big Ten Tournament win over Northwestern

What are your takeaways from Wisconsin’s big win over Northwestern?

Wisconsin basketball advanced to the Big Ten Tournament semifinal Friday afternoon with a decisive 70-61 win over the Northwestern Wildcats.

The Badgers continued the flash the form that led them to a blowout win over Maryland in the previous round, a form which the team has lacked since February began.

Related: Wisconsin social media all-in after Badgers big win over Northwestern

A.J. Storr led the Badgers with a dominant 30-point output, while center Steven Crowl seems to be finding his stroke at the right time — as he scored 19 points on 8/12 from the field and 3/5 from three-point range.

Wisconsin’s sudden excellence is terrific news as the Badgers enter the NCAA Tournament in search of their first Sweet 16 trip since 2016-17.

The news is obviously all positive after the clean win over Northwestern. Here are specific takeaways from the performance as the Badgers go on to face Purdue on Saturday afternoon:

Wisconsin basketball was ranked No. 6 in the country entering February for a reason. The team boasted one of the nation’s best offenses, a dynamic attack with versatile athletes and a solid complementary defense.

That team vanished in February and the first half of March. It’s safe to say it is now back after the last two performances.

Keep in mind: Wisconsin took care of Northwestern without Chucky Hepburn playing a minute. That’s an all-around performance, led by Storr’s dominance, without one of the team’s most important players touching the court.

Again, look out if the Badgers are truly back to their January ways.

A.J. Storr’s night ended with 30 points on 10/16 shooting, 3/5 from three-point range and six rebounds. He was the Badgers’ engine all afternoon, and provided a glimpse of shotmaking and offensive dominance that could propel a run in March.

Most Final Four teams have a go-to option when they need a bucket. Storr looks to be that player, it’s a question of the rest of the team rising to the occasion.

I don’t have stats on this, but it feels like Wisconsin wins every game that Steven Crowl shoots well from deep.

The team dominated Maryland Thursday when Crowl shot well, and it got the job done against Northwestern with the big man going 3/5 from deep.

Crowl’s versatility brings a needed dimension to the offense, especially as the team gets set to face opponents with good big men. His red-hot shooting is terrific news entering Saturday, and entering next week.

Adversity comes in the form of a 3-8 skid through six weeks of basketball, which the Badgers seem to now be out of. It also comes in the form of Chucky Hepburn being a late scratch, and the team not missing a beat once the game begins.

Hepburn was ‘ready to play if needed.’ But he wasn’t needed, because the rest of the team all rose to the occasion. This is the adversity that teams must battle through if a Final Four run is possible.

More terrific news: the loud Greg Gard detractors on social media are all quiet after a second straight terrific performance.

Those detractors should stay quiet indefinitely if the Badgers make an Elite Eight or Final Four run, which is even more of a reason to root for it.

After a breakout performance against Maryland, Blackwell shot only 1/8 this afternoon for three points. But he still played terrific defense on Northwestern star Boo Buie, plus added three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

That, and he still had the confidence to pull this deep three despite his struggles on the day:

Look out for Blackwell turning into a star as March Madness begins.

Who knew Kamari McGee was one of the more important players on this Badgers team. It feels like the team has turned a corner since he returned from injury against Rutgers.

McGee finished this contest with four points in 23 minutes, but also three rebounds, an assist and a huge block. He’s the perfect backup point guard to have, and will be a valuable depth piece for whatever run the Badgers can put together.

I’m usually hesitant to buy into teams in the postseason, but these last two games have been direct flashbacks of the dominance we saw in December and January. For that reason, I’m back in on the Badgers being a dark horse Elite Eight or Final Four contender.

Greg Gard has big-game tournament experience, Storr is the go-to scorer the team needs, Hepburn is the perfect floor general and (hopefully) Crowl and Tyler Wahl are both on point for the big matchups.

There have been numerous Wisconsin teams to let fans down in the last decade, lets hope this isn’t also one of them.

A.J. Storr did it again last night

This is starting to become commonplace for Wisconsin guard A.J. Storr.

The Badgers high-flying guard threw down yet another poster dunk on Thursday night, this time in a 78-66 win over Rutgers.

Storr finished the contest with 19 points on 8/15 shooting and 3/6 from three, while also adding seven rebounds two assists and a steal.

The future NBA draft pick was largely overshadowed by the surprising second-half explosion by Kamari McGee in his return to the lineup. But his solid night marked a 25th consecutive game of scoring in double figures, the longest streak for a Wisconsin Badger since Ethan Happ’s 42-game streak during the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

Storr’s highlight dunk still led the headlines. Thankfully we got numerous angles and viewpoints:
