Reacting to ESPN’s rankings of the Top 75 quarterbacks in CFB since 2000

Reacting to ESPN’s Top 75 QBs of the 2000s, where five Crimson Tide QBs made the list.

Sports debates are a very tricky game due to how highly subjective they are, especially when you get into debating players and their careers. As fans, it is very difficult to deliver an opinion without bias as we tend to let emotion be the driving force of our decisions. For example, how many Sooners fans do you know who advocate for Vince Young to be considered the greatest quarterback ever? I would imagine the answer is none, and if it’s not, I’d love to meet that person.

What also makes the debates so fascinating is there are so many tiny details that make up the argument. We each value different criteria in our quarterbacks. Did they win a Heisman Trophy? Did they win a national title? What conference did they play in? What kind of skill position players did he have around him? Who was on the coaching staff? How many years did he start? How many times did he beat his biggest rival?

ESPN ranked their top 75 quarterbacks since 2000, and five former Alabama signal-callers made the list.

5 Alabama QBs named in the top 75 QBs of the 2000s

See which five Alabama football QBs from this century make the top 75!

Alabama football enters the 2023 season with a rather unfamiliar issue: no one is sure who the quarterback will be. This hasn’t been a problem for the Crimson Tide in years, as the program had a streak going back to 2016 of high-quality starting quarterbacks.

ESPN’s Bill Connelly recently listed his top 75 quarterbacks of this century. Dating all the way back to the year 2000, he named quarterbacks from programs all over the country that had amazing collegiate careers.

Mind you, this is his opinion. The rankings of certain quarterbacks may be seen as questionable. For example, Baker Mayfield tops the list as the best quarterback of this century.

Five of the 75 spots on the list were taken up by former members of the Crimson Tide, all of whom were on national championship-winning rosters during their time in Tuscaloosa.

Jeremy Pruitt shares hilarious story of AJ McCarron recruiting mishap

During Pruitt’s interview, he shared a hilarious story of a recruiting mishap while at Alabama.

On Thursday, Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt joined Nick Saban, Gus Malzahn, Kirby Smart and many others to speak at the L’Arche Mobile Football Preview which was held online this year.

During Pruitt’s interview, he shared a hilarious story of a recruiting mishap while at Alabama.

Saban sent Pruitt down to Mobile, Alabama ahead of then-offensive coordinator Jim McElwain and then-offensive line coach Joe Pendry. At the time, the Crimson Tide was really interested in several players in and around that area, all which eventuslly signed with the Tide: AJ McCarron, Nico Johnson, Trent Richardson, and D.J. Fluker.

“Coach Saban told me, ‘Listen Jeremy, we’re in a good spot with these guys. I want you to go down there, recruit them for this week. At the end of the week, I’m going to send coach Pendry and coach McElwain for a home visit with a couple of these guys. I just want you to report to me every night what’s going on.

“I’m feeling like I’m doing a great job. I’m calling coach Saban every night. He’s asking me all these questions about AJ McCarron. He goes, ‘There’s a lot of talk about Tennessee coming down and if Lane Kiffin ( Tennessee head coach at the time) is visiting AJ McCarron. Is there any truth to that?

I said, ‘No, coach. I sat outside his house every night. I watched who was coming in.

So, on Thursday, coach McElwain and coach Pendry fly into Mobile and I pick them up. We’re going straight to AJ’s house. We pull up and I have the right address. The make of the vehicles were all the same. I knock on the door, knocked several times and this little old lady came to the door. Kind of shocks me there. I’m thinking this must be AJ’s grandmother.

I said, ‘Is AJ here?’ She said, ‘Who?’ I said, ‘AJ McCarron.’ She said, ‘No, baby. He lives four houses down that way.’

So, right then, I had a lot of anxiety thinking I’ve been watching the wrong house for a week.

Coach McElwain looked at me and said, ‘Great job, Pruitt.’”

Clearly, Pruitt’s mistake didn’t cost the Tide because McCarron went on to play for Alabama and lead the Tide to two back to back national titles in 2011 and 2012.
