Texas A&M is well represented in the National Football League, with some of the most well-known and respected players and coaches descending from the ranks of the maroon and white throughout the years.

In week 8 of the NFL schedule, a number of former Texas A&M standouts once again stood out on the field, including stars

like defensive ends Myles Garrett and Von Miller, wide receivers Christian Kirk, Mike Evans and Josh Reynolds, defensive back Donovan Wilson, and more.

Take a look back at the best images from these Aggies on the NFL field in Week 8 of the pro football campaign.

NFL investigating referees asking for Mike Evan’s autograph

Oops! NFL investigating referees asking for Mike Evan’s autograph

We get it. We’re pretty big fans of Mike Evans ourselves. Heck he was a huge part of one of the best runs of A&M football this century, and now he has a Super Bowl ring and is well on his way to a hall of fame career as a wide receiver for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Apparently, a couple of the officials who worked the Bucs game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday are fans as well, and when they saw Mike in the tunnel after the game, they asked him for an autograph. Of course, being the good Aggie he is, Mike didn’t hesitate for a second and granted the officials their requests.

Unfortunately, there are NFL rules preventing this sort of thing, primarily to prevent even the perception of favor from officials towards specific players, and those officials are now under investigation from the league.

Tom Pelissero, of NFL Network tweeted out the details.

In week 5 of the NFL schedule, a number of former Texas A&M standouts once again dominated on the field, including the regular names so far with Myles Garrett, Von Miller, Christian Kirk, Mike Evans, and for the third consecutive week, Dallas Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson very well against the Los Angeles Rams in a 22-10 victory, recording 6 tackles, 4 solo tackles, while helping the Cowboy’s elite defensive pass rush bully quarterback Matt Stafford all afternoon.

Week 6 of the NFL season began on Thursday when the 1-4 Washington Commadors traveled to Chicago to face the 2-3 Chicago Bears, as the Commanders held on to win 12-7 after Bear quarterback Justin Fields failed to score the go-ahead touchdown in the final seconds after multiple attempts in the red zone.

Donovan Wilson continues to shine for the Dallas Cowboys

Donovan Wilson continues to shine for the Dallas Cowboys

Donovan Wilson was a standout player at Texas A&M, who because of injuries, fell to the 6th round of the 2019 NFL draft, where he was selected by the Dallas Cowboys. Wilson broke out in 2020 as one of the lone bright spots on a terrible Cowboys defense, but missed enough time in 2021 that his shine was lessened.

But 2022 has been a different story. The Dallas defense is off to a start not matched in big D since the glory days of the Doomsday defenses of the early 1970’s and Wilson has been one of the keys to that success.

Wilson continued to stand out in the Cowboys Week 4 win over their division rival Washington Commanders, and earned recognition from our friend K.D. Drummond at Cowboys Wire in his 10 takeaways from the game.

The Cowboys love to run three-safety looks under Dan Quinn, and Donovan Wilson continues to prove this as the correct philosophy. Filling in for Jayron Kearse as the in-the-box safety since Week 1, Wilson had another tremendous game.

He led Dallas in solo (8) and total tackles (9) and also caused Wentz to be flagged for intentional grounding to avoid a sack. His hard-hitting ways have been impressive since he’s in the league but he’s finally coming into his own as a complete player.

Von Miller and Myles Garrett the best in the NFL

Von Miller and Myles Garrett the best in the NFL

The Aggies have been red hot on the recruiting trail securing defensive line talent, including their latest commitment, David (DJ) Hicks. In addition to the new blood joining the Aggie family, there are some legacy defensive linemen who have been pretty successful in the NFL.

Myles Garrett and Von Miller, two of those former Aggies who have been terrorizing quarterbacks on Sundays for years, continue to make their mark on the league.

In fact after three weeks of the NFL season, Pro Football Focus, the group known for grading “every player on every play in every game”, listed their highest graded Edge defenders in the league.

At the top of the list? You guessed it, Von Miller, and Myles Garrett.

Myles Garrett and Christian Kirk have big days to start off the 2022 NFL Season

Myles Garrett and Christian Kirk have big days to start off the 2022 NFL Season

Happy NFL Kickoff weekend everyone! Texas A&M is always well represented throughout the league every season, and here at Aggies Wire, we will be keeping track of every former Aggie’s performances every weekend as we cheer them on after donning the maroon and white during their memorable collegiate careers.

Today, defensive end Myles Garrett and wide receiver Christian Kirk,  two of the best players in Texas A&M Football history made their 2022 debuts on Sunday afternoon. Garrett, who is perhaps the best and most well-known player on the Cleveland Browns faced the Carolina Panthers while going against his former Quarterback Baker Mayfield. In what was purely a dominant performance, Garrett finished fourth in tackles, while posting a stat line of 4 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 tackles for loss, and 2 QB hits, while just straight bullying rookie tackle Ikem Ekwonu for 1 of his two sacks of the day. Garrett’s big day defensively helped secure a 26-24 victory for the Browns.

Christian Kirk, who is now a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars after spending four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, and signed a 4 year, $72-million-dollar contract with the Jaguars in free agency this offseason. Making his debut with Jacksonville while facing the Washington Commanders in Washington, Kirk led the Jaguars in receiving, posting a stat line of 6 receptions for 117 yards with a 19.5 average in a losing effort, falling to the Commanders 28-22. As the number one wideout for Jacksonville this season,    Kirk is in for what could be his best statistical season yet, continuing what he started during his highly successful three seasons with Texas A&M. Here’s one of Kirk’s best catches of the day!

Former Aggies QB, Kellen Mond, claimed by Browns after Vikings release

Former Aggies QB, Kellen Mond, claimed by Browns after Vikings release

Former Texas A&M quarterback, and former 66th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Kellen Mond, was waived earlier today by the Minnesota Vikings. This move comes after a bit of an up-and-down 2022 preseason for Mond (57% completion percentage, 2 TD and 2 INT over three games), as well as the new coaching staff, under first year head coach, Kevin O’Connell, leaning towards the likes of recently acquired quarterback, Nick Mullens.

During his four years in College Station, Mond started 46 games, passed for nearly 9,700 yards (a school record), threw 71 touchdowns and 27 interceptions, and had a 59% completion percentage. Mond also rushed for 1,609 yards and totaled 22 rushing touchdowns.

However, on Tuesday morning, teams had the opportunity to make claims for players placed on waivers, and Mond was claimed by the Cleveland Browns. Where he will join fellow Aggie Myles Garrett, and likely serve as Jacoby Brissett’s backup.

Christian Kirk gives alma mater high praise from Jacksonville

Christian Kirk gives alma mater high praise from Jacksonville

New member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and former Texas A&M Aggie, Christian Kirk, gave his alma mater a shout-out following today’s practice. The former No. 47 overall draft pick in 2018 (Arizona Cardinals) signed a 4-year, $72 million contract ($37 million guaranteed) this offseason when he hit free agency.

Kirk praised Texas A&M, saying his time in College Station was “the most incredible experience” and “best three years of [his] life.” He didn’t wait long to give appreciation towards the many people who “helped facilitate [his] experience and [his] success there.” In three seasons in an Aggies’ uniform, Kirk recorded 234 receptions for 2,856 yards and 26 receiving touchdowns.

Kirk had his most productive NFL season in 2021, hauling in 77 receptions for 982 yards and five receiving touchdowns. Kirk will look to add an element of explosion (over 12 yards/catch over four NFL seasons) to Jacksonville’s offense with second-year quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, looking to build upon year one in, now, Doug Pederson’s offensive system. Kirk will join Marvin Jones Jr. and newly signed wide receiver, Zay Jones, as key offensive contributors.

Check-out the video below of Christian Kirk showing Aggie Nation much love:

Myles Garrett lands at No. 11 in NFL top-100

Myles Garrett lands at No. 11 in NFL top-100

Every year near through out the pre-season, likely as a way to drum up interest in the upcoming season, the NFL network airs a countdown show. They call it the “Top-100” and the premise is that it’s a ranking of the top-100 players in the NFL, as voted by the players in the NFL. It started as a way to fill broadcast windows during the 2011 NFL lockout, and due to the interest it receives has continued to air.

The list always has some questionable rankings, and analysts are quick to point out that not every player in the league gets a vote, and the players who do vote, only get to list 20 names, and many don’t even take the process that seriously. That being said, it’s still an interesting process to watch play out every year, and the b-roll videos the network puts together with highlights and the commentary from players are stellar.

This year, the highest ranked former Aggie great on the list is Myles Garrett, currently of the Cleveland Browns.
