Did Texas A&M basketball move up in the AP Top 25 Poll after Week 3?

Texas A&M basketball stays in the top 25 after comeback win over Southern in Week 3

Texas A&M moves to 4-1 after beating the Southern Jaguars at Reed Arena 71-54 on Wednesday night. With only one game this week A&M will not see a big jump but a slow climb.

In their only game last week, the Aggies came out of the gate sluggish against the Southern Jaguars. They went into halftime down by 14, shooting horribly, and missing free throws. A refocused A&M team would outscore the Jaguars 46-15 in the second half to win comfortably and have a short break before the Players Era Festival Tournament.

The top five spots stayed put with all teams remaining undefeated, but three teams did see big drops. Purdue, Creighton, and Arizona all fell seven spots while Texas A&M moved up three to No. 20 on Monday morning.

Below is the most recent AP Top 25 Poll after Week 3:

  1. Kansas 5-0

Texas A&M basketball will need to lean on Andersson Garcia and Zhuric Phelps

Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams talks about the qualities that Andersson Garcia and Zhuric Phelps bring to the Aggies

On Monday, Head Coach Buzz Williams gave his thoughts about the big win over Lamar in their bounce-back victory in their home opener. Buzz’s big advantage this season is the returning experience led by senior guard Wade Taylor IV.

Senior forward Andersson Garcia and senior guard Zhuric Phelps have very important roles this year, and Wade Taylor will need to lean on these two to help relieve some of the stress on the offense side. Former SMU guard Phelps has made an immediate impact, averaging 17 points and 63.6% from the field. He also had six steals in his first two games in the Maroon & White.

Garcia, better known as “The Dominican Dennis Rodman,” is somewhat of a cult hero in Aggieland. When he is not grabbing rebounds, he is playing in the band or knocking down game-tying three-pointers in the postseason. He is the top offensive rebounder in the SEC and has been working on this jump shot, turning himself into a double-double machine.

Below are a few comments from Buzz Williams about how Garcia and Phelps have already significantly impacted the last two games.

“Andersson Garcia is really bright. How he processes rebounding is savant-ish. He is a much more confident shooter than he has ever been because of the work he’s put in. He can shoot.”

“Not only does Zhuric impact our team, but he’s going to make the game easier for the other four guys on the floor. I think he has a very high ceiling. He’s a great on-ball defender and that changes our team. I don’t think he’s close to his ceiling yet.”

No. 23 Texas A&M will host No. 21 Ohio State on Friday, Nov. 15. The game will air on SEC Network at 8:00 p.m. CT.

Where did Texas A&M basketball land in the initial US LBM Coaches poll after Week 1?

Where did Texas A&M basketball lands in the initial US LBM Coaches poll after Week 1?

Texas A&M (1-1) started the season ranked No. 13 overall and a team with a ton of experience that was a few shots short of making it to the Sweet 16 last year. However, even though they won their last game the season-opening road loss to an unranked UCF team drops the Aggies to No. 23 in the newest coaches poll.

We saw some of the same issues pop up as last year’s team in the loss against UCF with missed free throws, perimeter defense, and scoring outside of Wade Taylor. Adding Zhuric Phelps, who missed the game against UCF, showed that he can be a spark in the scoring to avoid Wade Taylor having to play hero ball.

Ranking Team Record Points
1 Kansas 2-0 759 (21)
2 Alabama 2-0 724 (4)

2026 RHP Cayden King has committed to Texas A&M

Texas A&M baseball earns commitment from a talented 2026 RHP out of Murfreesboro, TN

Texas A&M baseball coaches Michael Earley and John Kelly landed a commitment from another pitcher to add to the future rotation. On Monday morning, pitcher Cayden King, out of Murfreesboro, TN, announced via social media that he will join the Aggies in Bryan, College Station.

King is a 6’5″ 215 junior already flirting with a 90-mph fastball and has a ridiculous curveball with a frame where size can still be added. He ended his sophomore campaign with a 6-1 record 69 Ks and a 1.4 ERA while being named to the All-District team.

He has the arm talent to sit in the 90s as he gets older and stronger, which no doubt will have the Aggie staff keeping a strong relationship with him to fend off any future recruiters looking for a powerful RHP.

Fans react to an exciting Aggie win over 11th ranked Tennessee

Social Reacts to Buzz Williams Leading the Aggies to its 10 straight home win at Reed

There is no doubt the Aggies are playing some of their best basketball in years right now. They have won 15 of their last 17 and are 14-1 when they’ve played in front of the home crowd. Aggie fans packed Reed Arena filling 12,989 seats and had it rocking from start to finish. It was so loud at points in the game that it was hard to even hear here the official’s whistles.

The Aggies took the win over the Vols in a nail-biter that ended in a 68-63 victory, led by Wade Taylor and Julius Marble who up a combined 46 points. Wade’s 26 points will put him in line to take home another SEC player of the week award.

The No.25 ranked Aggies are making it really hard this year to keep them out of the NCAA Tournament next month and they seem to be peaking at the right time.

Check out the social media fire storm from the game.

Coach Blair named as a finalist for the 2023 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame class

Former Texas A&M Womens Basketball coach named as finalists for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame

Coach Blair could probably have his own statue on the Texas A&M campus for what he’s done for the Women’s basketball team over the years. After four almost 4 decades and over 850 wins, and an NCAA Championship he decided to hang it up after the 2022 season.

What makes Gary Blair’s journey into women’s basketball a great story was how it began. After graduating from Texas Tech, he was looking to coach high school baseball in the area but came up empty. He eventually took a PE job at the newly integrated South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas Texas. Soon after he arrived Title IX was passed opening the door for girls’ athletics and Blair was approached to coach the girls Basketball team.

He accepted that opportunity and it became the launching point for how Coach Blair developed into one of the best Women’s basketball coaches in history.  Here is a brief statement on how he viewed his time at South Oak Cliff:

“I loved every minute of it,” Blair said. “It just helped me grow as a man, grow as a coach. I was ready to coach anything, any sport, any time.”

Gary Blair’s teams were known for rebounding and playing tough defense. Those two attributes would serve him and his teams well throughout the years resulting in multiple titles and 20 plus win seasons.  At one point his career consisted of 14 straight NNCA tournament appearances which could have been extended to 16 if not for the COVID year cancellation.

It was a little bittersweet to hear about Coach Blair’s retirement, but Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork perfectly describes how I feel about his impact at Texas A&M and the sport of college basketball:

“Coach Blair is a legend in women’s basketball and college sports,” Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork said. “He has made a transformational impact on Texas A&M University, our athletics program and all of college basketball. His decades long championship-caliber coaching acumen and recruiting ability has transcended many generations of women’s basketball players and his impact will be felt long after he hangs up the whistle.”

I really enjoyed watching Coach Blair over the years and still have the 2011 banner hanging in my office from when he led the Aggies to their 1st NCAA Basketball Title. He is currently, possibly, in every Hall of Fame he’s been eligible for until now and making it into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame would be icing on the cake to an outstanding career.

Dockery is the first commitment for the Aggies’ class of 2024.

Texas A&M got a special gift on Christmas when Jackson-Reed (DC) four-star small forward Rob Dockery announced his commitment to the Aggies.

An athletic wing who can play multiple positions, Dockery (6-foot-7, 195 pounds) is ranked No. 19 among small forwards in the class of 2024 and No. 2 overall in D.C.

In eight games this season he has averaged 15.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game. He’s shooting 62% from the floor but just 22% from three-point range and 65% from the foul line.

Seven other schools have extended offers, including Howard, LSU, Maryland, St. Bonaventure, Towson, UMBC and Georgia Tech. Dockery told On3 that he picked Texas A&M because of his relationship with Buzz Williams’ staff.

“I built a solid relationship with the coaches, I can tell they really want me to be there. It’s a great school and a great environment. After taking the visit there, it just felt like home. SEC is great basketball.”
