Watch: Former Aggie Myles Garrett shows off his skills in Cavs Summer League

Myles Garrett throws down some powerful dunks during the Cavs Summer League pre-game warm-ups

Watching Myles Garrett dunk a basketball is nothing new. The 6-4 270-pound All-Pro DE has been playing in celebrity basketball and pickup games for the past few years and has multiple clips of him launching his massive frame off the ground for a thunderous dunk.

Friday night was no different as he threw down a two-handed windmill during the warm-ups of a Cleveland Cavalier Summer League game. Watching Garrett suit up for a few summer games would be fun to see how a team would match up with this strength.

Garrett is a top-tier elite athlete, and while having some fun in the summer logging highlight reel dunks, he is moving into the Hall of Fame era of his career. His focus will be on getting to the QB and putting the Browns in the best position to make a playoff run this upcoming season.

Former Aggie Jace Sternberger becomes USFL Champion

Former Aggie Jace Sternberger becomes USFL Champion

On July 2nd, the USFL held its championship game at the Tim Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, OH. The Birmingham Stallions entered the night looking for back-to-back championships, but the top offense in the league was up against the best defense in the league. I know they say defense wins championships, but that was not the case in this game.

The Stallions did what they have been doing all season… put up points. This time, your guy Jace did not reach the endzone, but he was still a big factor adding three catches for 65 and a staggering 21.7 average per reception.

That helped lead the Stallions to a 28-12 victory for their second consecutive title. Congrats to Jace on a wonderful season where he led the league in receiving touchdowns en route to becoming a champion. He talked about how his resurgence in the USFL would hopefully open the door for another NFL opportunity. After such a dynamic year, there is bound to be at least one or two teams looking to bring him in for a look before it’s all said and done.

We wish Jace the best of luck and are proud to see him succeeding at the next level!

Future Hall of Fame Lane Johnson put Myles Garrett in his top five pass rushers

Myles Garrett tops future hall of famers top five list

There isn’t much controversy putting Myles Garrett at the top of any defensive line list. However, a level of respect is earned when the best of the best name you as one of the elite defenders they have witnessed play in their career. Lane Johnson has been one of the more dominant Offensive linemen over the past decade, and recently, while on the Richard Sherman Podcast, he revealed his Top 5 Pass rushers.

Rounding out the top of the list is Former Texas A&M Unanimous Consensus All-American Myles Garrett, who took the league by storm after being drafted 1st overall in the 2017 draft. He was no one-hit wonder as he went on to be voted to the pro bowl four times and be named an All-Pro four times.

Below is what he said about his top 5:

“I would say Myles [Garrett]. I’ll tell you, Maxx Crosby is a really good player. T.J. Watt. Those guys, man… Obviously, they’re skilled, but those players, they’re so smart, So, those three. Micah [Parsons]. I had some really battles with Demarcus [Lawrence],” Johnson said. “I’ll tell you one guy who people don’t know. You could ask Trent [Williams], you could ask Tyron [Smith], Olivier Vernon might have been the hardest player for a lot of guys to block.”

When it’s all said and done, Garrett is headed for Canton if he can stay healthy and keep his production at a high level. He was a great ambassador for Texas A&M, and I hope to watch him play for years to come.

Texas A&M sent Five athletes to the SEC Joint SAAC, Leadership Council Meeting

Texas A&M sent Five athletes to the SEC Joint SAAC, Leadership Council Meeting

It’s that time of the year again when the SEC schools send their student leadership representatives to Birmingham, Alabama, for a two-day meeting. The leadership council was put together in 2016 to bridge the gap between student-athletes and league officials.

The Aggies were represented well at the meeting, sending Henry Coleman III (men’s basketball), Lauren Hogan (volleyball), Jada Malone (women’s basketball), LT Overton (football), and Rylee Shufelt (equestrian). Coleman has been a mainstay in leadership positions on various student council boards.

While at the meeting, the students interacted with top medical professionals regarding mental health, including a talk with SEC Chief medical advisor Dr. Katie O’Neal. They also heard presentations from Blair Bloomston of the Game On Nation and Will Baggett of Emergent Executives.

This was an excellent opportunity for everyone involved in this joint meeting to bounce ideas and share experiences with each other while getting to engage with significant players in the SEC league office; below is the announcement of the five Aggies selected to attend.

Coaches, friends, and former players pay tribute after Terry Price’s passing

Coaches, friends, and former players pay tribute after Terry Price’s passing

The passing of Texas A&M defensive line coach, Terry Price, caught a lot of college football followers by surprise. Coach Price was not only a talented recruiter, but he was also a really good football coach. During his decade spent coaching at Texas A&M, multiple defensive linemen have been drafted with the most notable being Myles Garrett.

He was also legendary with the recruits and his BBQ was one of the main staples of the annual pool party recruitment trip. While he might have held the title of DL Coach, he was beloved by the entire team and staff.

People came from all corners of the college football landscape to share their condolences and fond memories of Price. This is a devastating loss for the Aggie community, and we are keeping Coach Price’s family in our thoughts and prayers.

Former Texas A&M All-American TE Jace Sternberger is finding his way in the USFL

Jace Sternberger reflects on his time at Texas A&M and his current resurgence in the USFL

Professional sports are for the elite of the elite, but it’s not always about the physical challenges; there are mental and opportunity hurdles that must be overcome as well. We hear a lot about athletes no longer being in love with the game, simply questioning if the grind is worth it in the long run, or just needing an honest shot at getting on the field to play. For Jace Sternberger, it came down to opportunity, and after a brief stint in the NFL, he is now making a name for himself in the USFL with the hopes of getting another crack at the National Football League.

He currently leads the league in receiving touchdowns (7), second in receiving average (15.7), and fourth in receiving yards (517). Sternberger has also proven throughout the season that he is the best tight end in the league, being named to the All-USFL Team offense. As a side note, former Aggie Avery Gennesy is also seeing a resurgence as he made the team.

In a recent interview with David Nuno at TexAgs, Sternberger gave fans an update on his journey where he is now and his hopes for the future. Below are a few of the highlights of that interview:

It has been a refreshing year. The USFL kind of reminds me of being in JUCO right before I went to A&M, especially with the way the season is going. I hadn’t played football for 18 or 19 months. I didn’t realize what I had until it was gone. This is a great training opportunity to get back into the NFL.

I remember all the things people said during the 18 months I wasn’t playing. I always appreciate the love and support, but some of the people reaching out now weren’t there in those months. Those months were rough times for me. It has never been a talent issue for me. It is all about the scheme and fit

For a deeper insight, visit TexAgs to listen to the entire interview. Also below are highlights from Jace’s record-setting year in the USFL.

Top Aggie target Jaylan Hornsby wants to team up with another top recruit

Four-star Aggie target Jaylan Hornsby knows talent and want to play with another top recruit

Birds of a feather flock together as the old saying goes. That still holds true until this day as the best usually want to play with the best. Recruiting grows by leaps and bounds with the Texas A&M production team being one of the best in the nation when it comes to putting out social media content for prospective recruits. Even with NIL putting its hand on the scale relationships are still King when all things are equal.

The relationships do not have to be between the school’s staff and the athlete. The recruits can also develop a link with each other, and social media makes it so easy to stay in touch these days that they might have a tighter bond with someone they met at camp over a recruiter. In a majority of these cases, they will at least mention playing together once along their recruitments and when they put it on social media, we are going to let you know.

Four-star wide receiver Jaylan Hornsby posted a photo of him an on a visit at Texas A&M with five-star receiver Cameron Coleman noting how dynamic they could be if on the same team.

While isn’t breaking news is does give a little more insight to where Hornsby might be leaning in the decision between Texas A&M & Penn State. This could just be his way of getting some personal recruiting in while on campus.

Early reports indicate that Texas A&M will host Texas in 2024 at Kyle Field

Based on early reports, the Lone Star Showdown will be headed to College Station in 2024

The time is near… kind of. With the new additions to the SEC, Texas and Oklahoma fans have been eagerly anticipating how scheduling will shake out. Well, the world will know at 6 pm Central time; however, like almost everything, information tends to leak out a little early.

In this case, multiple sources have said that after a 12-year hiatus, Texas A&M and Texas will finally meet on the gridiron again. There is still a sour taste from the last gameplay, where Texas defeated the Aggies with a walk-off field goal by Justin Tucker in College Station. But that’s the past, and we look forward to the 2024 match-up. Chip Brown from Horns 247 was the first to bless us with this news via Twitter, tossing Aggie fans into a frenzy trying to confirm if the information was legit.

Below is what Chip learned from a few league sources on the decision.

“Some league sources have said A&M getting to host the first SEC meeting between the Aggies and Longhorns was an olive branch to A&M for the SEC admitting Texas into the league after the Aggies had expressed their desire to be the only SEC school from the Lone Star State.”

Whether that’s the actual reason doesn’t matter because Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork has been additament when the rivalry is renewed that A&M would be hosting, and he’s not backed off that stance over the past few years.

I get that we still have to get through the 2023 season, but I believe we are going to be in for a treat with how both teams have been recruiting the past few years. I’m confident that the 2024 Lone Star Showdown will be an instant classic and one of the most-watched football games that year.

Former Aggie running back Trayveon Williams and former student Alex Sinatra teach NIL

Former Aggies Alex Sinatra and Trayveon Williams discuss their class at Texas A&M on NIL and athlete advocacy.

When sports attorney and sports business consultant Alex Sinatra reached out to former Texas A&M running back Trayveon Williams via Twitter direct message, she didn’t know if he would respond. They weren’t even connected on Twitter. However, two days later he responded and agreed to co-teach a law school class with Sinatra about Name, Image, & Likeness and Athlete Advocacy at Texas A&M University School of Law. They ended up being connected through something stronger than Twitter, they were part of the Aggie Network.

The duo set out to create a class that kept athletes at the focus and pushed Sinatra’s mantra that Athletes are Humans First and Williams’ mantra that athlete are More Than Athletes. While Williams is not an attorney, Sinatra knew that his experience as a college and professional athlete was extremely valuable for future attorneys and athlete advocates to understand.

The class is open to current Texas A&M University School of Law students and the first cohort is currently going through the class.

“Participating in the NIL & Athlete Advocacy course has been one of the most enlightening experiences of my time in law school,” Texas A&M University School of Law student Kate Rosenberg said of the class. “Our professors teach us from two vastly different perspectives, and my fellow students continue to amaze me with their creativity and ingenuity when it comes to navigating the NIL educational space.”

Another student in the class, Hayden Campbell had this to say, “Athlete advocacy is easily my favorite class I’ve taken in law school! Professors Sinatra and Williams approach the class in a very unique way. They go beyond just teaching us rules and regulations. Instead, they encourage us to be responsible for our own learning and understanding while offering guidance and ideas as we need it. They also place an emphasis on developing soft skills and reinforcing the idea that we’re working with athletes, and that Athletes are Humans First. I love the course, and anyone who ever has the opportunity to take the course, or any course taught by professors Sinatra and Williams should jump at the opportunity!”

The Dean of the law school Robert Ahdieh, also wanted to allow others interested in this emerging field of law to benefit from the duo’s unique one-of-a-kind class. Therefore they set out to create workshops for law students and attorneys on the topic. These workshops are open to laws students and attorneys around the world.

“I attended the first of three CLE workshops presented by our professors as both a student and in my position as Director of NIL for the University of Texas at Arlington,” Rosenberg shared”. Although I hold a position specifically focused on this area, I find that I am constantly learning new perspectives, concerns, and ideas about NIL. Attending these workshops, and hearing not only how to succeed in navigating NIL, but how to do it while being the best advocate I can be for the student athletes I work with, are invaluable opportunities and I can’t wait to attend the next one.”

They are also creating workshops for the community at large and dates for those are forthcoming.

Bengals Running Back Trayveon Williams To Co-Teach NIL Course At Texas A&M School Of Law

“It was important for me to teach everyone who will be involved and is currently involved in the sports ecosystem that Athletes are Humans First,” Sinatra said.

“They are more than a number, record, or their statistics. They have families, friends, and lives outside of their sport. To often athletes are seen as commodities to be traded or sold or as the reason someone lost money in fantasy, but at the end of the day this is only the athlete’s job and there is so much more to them as humans. That’s why educating the future sports attorneys and athletes advocates is so important. We need everyone in the space to have more empathy toward the athletes and each other.”

“It was an opportunity of an lifetime that I absolutely couldn’t pass up,” Williams said. “When you look back on it I ended up choosing to play at Texas A&M because of the Aggie network and the benefit that it could bring me as a college athlete and as an alum. This class is an example of that in full effect. Obviously I was not able to monetize my NIL in college, however, I looked at my NIL as my reputation and made sure to leave a good impression when I declared for the NFL draft.

“Now, that paid off and I am able to capitalize on that reputation and this opportunity to teach wouldn’t have come up if my reputation was bad. But most importantly, a former Aggie, Alex Sinatra, used the Aggie network and reached out to me via Twitter direct message. I absolutely couldn’t say no when she offered for me to co-teach the course. Words can’t explain the amount of fun we’re having with our students exploring and navigating this new world of NIL as it meets law.”

“We are also getting the opportunity to engage through workshops with other law students and faculty. I’m the prime example of what the Aggie network can do for you. During my recruitment to play at A&M, the Aggie network was the biggest sell and the pitch is literally coming to life now.”

Professor Sinatra and Williams’ plans are to teach the class every spring and hopefully bring this class and others like it to other undergraduate and graduate programs.

ODDS: Utah State -27.5

And just like that, we’re back. Last time we saw Blake Anderson’s Utah State Aggies, Deven Thompkins was dancing all over SoFi Stadium hauling in 60-yard bombs from third-string QB Cooper Legas and polishing a shiny new Mountain West crown.

We probably didn’t talk enough then about how many all-time performances USU fans witnessed that year. Most of the 2021 season was spent worrying about a potential Covid-19 reprise, or whether or not the team was more lucky than good. The definitive answer by last December—who the hell cares?—allowed a rare off-season of peace and prosperity among the Aggie faithful.

Expectations are high for this 2022 Aggie team loaded with strong offensive and defensive lines, an all-conference caliber QB and plenty of good vibes leftover from last year’s breakout campaign. Let’s see what they’re up against in this weekend’s CFB opener.

Normally, Key No. 1 for this matchup would go here. But…it’s UConn.

Look, no offense to the Huskies, but…come on. Last year’s squad went 0-6 in road games and 1-11 overall (although they did scare Wyoming in a narrow 24-22 loss, which is pretty funny). They return 12 starters and will presumably be led by Penn State transfer QB Ta’Quan Roberson, a 6’0 sophomore with 11 career completions to his credit. True, this year’s team isn’t last year’s team, but last year’s team finished the season with an average scoring margin of like -23 so let’s not overthink this.

Key No. 2: See Key No. 1

Starting QB and gilded Aggie hero Logan Bonner is back. Calvin Tyler Jr. is back. Justin McGriff’s towering 6’6 frame is back. While it’s possible the offense won’t boast the same firepower that elevated the program to the 15th-best passing attack in the nation last year, they’ll still look like superstars Saturday afternoon.

Key No. 3: Only One of These Teams Has a Defensive Coordinator

Defense often gets short-shrift in these previews, but here we are trying to highlight anyone or anything UConn has going for it defensively and it turns out the only real story of the past week is Defensive Coordinator Lou Spanos taking an indefinite leave of absence from the team. Do the Huskies have anyone on staff with defensive coordinator experience? Or will they let a lucky fan call their plays? With Bonner dropping bombs overhead will it really matter?

Prediction

Even in a tune-up game like this one, Utah State should consider it a derogatory mark on its record if UConn manages to so much as sniff the end zone. Bonner will cook, the lines will be strong, and it should be an all-in-all celebratory opening to the season at Maverik.

Score: Utah State 45, UConn 3
