#Michigan didn’t fall far.

It was on the verge of being an impressive win on Saturday, but things fell apart late for Michigan football.

The Wolverines had a 16-point lead in a game that didn’t even feel that close, but they let the Spartans hang around, and ultimately MSU pulled off the home win. So, what do the coaches around college football think about the maize and blue in the aftermath?

Previously, Michigan was No. 6, but lost to the No. 7 team in the last USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. After the road loss, the Wolverines fell to No. 10 while MSU rose to No. 6.

Future opponents still loom. Ohio State is ranked No. 5 while Penn State ranked 23rd.

Michigan football handled business against Northwestern in Week 8, taking down the Wildcats, 33-7, on Saturday. Ranked No. 6 in the most recent USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll, the Wolverines might have looked mortal in the first half before dominating the second.

Though no one ranked ahead of the maize and blue lost, but Cincinnati struggled with Navy and Oklahoma squeaked by Kansas. Would that be enough to move the Wolverines up?

No, Michigan football stayed ranked at No. 6, setting up the six-versus-seven matchup with Michigan State on Saturday. Ohio State remained at No. 5, but Penn State, of course, dropped after the loss to Illinois in nine overtimes.

Michigan State football stays put in AFCA Coaches Poll heading into Michigan game

Michigan State football stays put in AFCA Coaches Poll heading into Michigan game

The week is finally here. Michigan State football will host Michigan at home in an undefeated rivalry match-up. This is the first time these teams will ever have met where they are both 7-0 on the season. They will also be touching each other in the AFCA Coaches Poll heading into the game.

The Spartans are at No. 7 coming out of their bye week while the Wolverines will also stay at No. 6 after dismantling Northwestern.

Ohio State remains ahead of both teams at No. 5 after they handled business against Indiana. You would have to think that whoever wins the Michigan vs. Michigan State game will have a strong case to move ahead of Ohio State and probably even Alabama at No. 3.

Michigan football was idle in Week 7, but that didn’t change the fact that the Wolverines moved up in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

With No. 2 Iowa losing to unranked Purdue, the maize and blue moved up one spot, from No. 7 to 6, with rival Michigan State right behind at No. 7. The two face off on Oct. 30 — Michigan plays Northwestern in Week 8 while MSU has a bye.

Fellow future opponents, Ohio State and Penn State, are No. 5 and 8, respectively.

Michigan State football jumps two spots in latest AFCA Coaches Poll following road win over Indiana

Michigan State football jumps two spots in latest AFCA Coaches Poll following road win over Indiana

They had to earn it, but Michigan State football was able to go to 7-0 on the season following a tough road win over Indiana. While the game was a little too close for comfort for many fans, a win is a win and it was enough to move the Spartans up two spots to No. 7 in the latest USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll.

The Spartans leapfrogged Penn State and now sit one spot behind No. 6 Michigan and two spots behind No. 5 Ohio State. Alabama is No. 4. That might frustrate some fans given that Ohio State and Alabama both have one loss, but that’s the kind of mercy you get in the polls when you are a top program. Michigan was also able to stay in front of MSU despite having one less win on the season.

On the flip side, Iowa dropped all the way from No. 2 to No. 11 following an embarrassing loss at home against Purdue.

The Spartans will get a much needed bye week before they face Michigan on Oct. 30.

Michigan State football cracks top ten in latest AFCA Coaches Poll

Another week, another win, and another advancement in the polls for Michigan State football. The Spartans were able to control Rutgers on the road behind the heroics and big play ability of Kenneth Walker III and Jalen Nailor. The win was able to finally put them in the top ten of the AFCA Coaches Poll and they now sit at No. 9.

This is the first time the Spartans have been in the top ten since Sept. 18, 2016.

The Big Ten is well represented in the top ten. Penn State is No. 8, Michigan is No. 7, Ohio State is No. 6 and Iowa is No. 2. MSU fans might be frustrated to note that Penn State, Ohio State and Alabama all sit ahead of them in the top ten despite all having one loss on the season but the Spartans will have every chance to go ahead of them in the coming weeks.

Now 6-0, Michigan football moves up again in AFCA Coaches Poll

Michigan football wasn’t going to move way, way up in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY Sports, given that many in front of the Wolverines didn’t lose. But two did: No. 1 Alabama no No. 4 Penn State. The Nittany Lions lost to the No. 3 team, however, while the Crimson Tide lost to unranked Texas A&M.

Still, the maize and blue are unblemished, even if they came really, really close to ending up with a one in the loss column. However, Nebraska had taken both last week’s No. 5 Oklahoma and No. 11 Michigan State to the wire in their games, so there’s no shame in playing a close game to the Huskers.

In the latest AFCA Coaches Poll, Michigan football ended up checking in at No. 7, up one spot, with the bye week up next.

Still, there are big games left, with No. 9 MSU, No. 8 Penn State, and No. 6 Ohio State left on the schedule.

The latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll and where LSU opponents rank

A look at the updated Coaches Poll and where LSU opponents sit in the latest edition.

The LSU Tigers were close to getting back into the top 25 of the coaches poll. All they had to do was beat the No. 22 Auburn Tigers in Death Valley, only it didn’t happen. USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll was released on Sunday. The Tigers now sit at 3-2 with another top 25 matchup this week against the Kentucky Wildcats. Their opponent upset the Florida Gators at home, and host the Bayou Bengals on Saturday night.

Alabama had a huge matchup with the Ole Miss Rebels but they raced out to a 35-0 lead in the second half. Georgia also faced a top 12 team in the No. 8 Arkansas Razorbacks, much like Alabama it wasn’t close. Texas A&M Aggies came in as the No. 15 team but fell to Mississippi State at home.

A look at the full coaches poll after week five’s games.
