AFC West standings: Chiefs and Broncos at the top entering Week 4

Going into the fourth week of the season, the Chiefs and Broncos sit atop the AFC West at 2-1.

Who would have predicted this after the Denver Broncos lost to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1? After three games, the Broncos (2-1) are tied with the Kansas City Chiefs (2-1) for first place in the AFC West.

Granted, three weeks is a small sample size, but it’s still a welcomed development in Denver. Here’s how the division stacks up entering Week 4.

Team Record Div. Conf.
Kansas City Chiefs 2-1 1-0 1-1
Denver Broncos 2-1 0-0 1-0
Los Angeles Chargers 1-2 1-1 1-2
Las Vegas Raiders 0-3 0-1 0-2

The Broncos have a better record in the conference, but the Chiefs already have a division win, which is the second tiebreaker after head-to-head. Denver is yet to play a division game, but that will change this week when the Broncos travel to Las Vegas to face the Raiders.

If Denver wins in Vegas and gets a division win, that could propel the Broncos above the Chiefs in the division. But, again, it’s still early in the season, and these standings could obviously change quickly.

Broncos clinch last-place finish in AFC West

For a second consecutive year, the Broncos will finish in last place in the AFC West.

Following Sunday’s 34-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, the Denver Broncos have now clinched a last-place finish in the AFC West for the 2021 NFL season. This marks the second-straight year that Denver has finished fourth in the division.

With one week left to play, the Broncos don’t have enough time to catch up to the Chargers or Las Vegas Raiders for second place. The Kansas City Chiefs, who clinched the AFC West title last week, will be competing for the No. 1 seed in the AFC when they travel to Denver this week.

“We still have another game to play and we are going to get ready,” coach Vic Fangio said after the team was eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday. “Hopefully, [we’ll have] another normal week of practice and put our best foot forward next week to compete and try to win that game.”

Here is a look at the division standings going into Week 18 of the season.

Team Record Div. Conf.
Kansas City Chiefs 11-5 4-1 6-5
Los Angeles Chargers 9-7 3-2 6-5
Las Vegas Raiders 9-7 2-3 7-4
Denver Broncos 7-9 1-4 3-8

The Chargers and Raiders will face off on “Sunday Night Football” this week to determine who will finish second in the AFC West and earn a Wild Card berth in the conference.

Since winning the division and Super Bowl 50 in 2015 (12-4), the Broncos have since finished third (2016; 9-7), fourth (2017; 5-11), third (2018; 6-10), second (2019; 7-9), fourth (2020; 5-11) and fourth (2021; TBD).

AFC West standings: Chiefs clinch 1st, Broncos fighting for 2nd

Entering the final two weeks of the season, the Broncos are currently in last place in the AFC West.

The Kansas City Chiefs secured their 11th win of the season on Sunday and clinched an AFC West title, marking their seventh-straight season winning the division. The Denver Broncos, meanwhile, suffered an ugly loss that was a big blow to the team’s playoff hopes.

Denver still has a chance — albeit a slim chance — to finish in second place in the AFC West this season. Here’s a look at the current division standings going into Week 17.

Team Record Div. Conf.
Kansas City Chiefs* 11-4 4-1 6-4
Los Angeles Chargers 8-7 2-2 5-5
Las Vegas Raiders 8-7 2-3 6-4
Denver Broncos 7-8 1-3 3-7

The Broncos will play the Chargers on the road this week before hosting the Chiefs in their season finale in Week 18. If Denver wins out, the team could finish in second place in the division if the Raiders lose out.

If the Broncos aren’t going to make the playoffs anyway, though, finishing the season in the bottom of the division would give the team an easier schedule in 2022 and a bad record would give the team a high draft pick.

Denver still has a chance (a very slim chance) to make the postseason, so the team will keep fighting, but it’s been another disappointing year overall for the Broncos.

Division officially out of reach for Chargers

For the sixth-straight season, the Chiefs are AFC West champions.

For the sixth-straight season, the Chiefs are AFC West champions following their win over the Steelers and the Chargers’ loss to the Texans in Week 16.

There was still a chance Los Angeles could have won the division, even after falling to Kansas City in Week 15. That would’ve required winning out and the Chiefs losing at least two, including one to the Broncos in the final week.

While being crowned AFC West champs was a slim possibility, the Bolts would have been able to cruise their way into the playoffs by simply beating each of the remaining opponents on their schedule.

But after the upset loss to Houston, the Chargers need to win their final two games against the Broncos and Raiders and get help from others facing the few AFC teams that are also in the hunt.

Entering Week 16, the Bolts had a 71% chance of making the playoffs. Now, that number has dropped to 33%.

AFC West standings: Broncos fall to last place in division

The Broncos could have moved into first place in the AFC West with a win in Week 13. Instead, their loss dropped them to last place in the division.

The Denver Broncos could have moved into first place in the AFC West if they upset the Kansas City Chiefs on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 13. Instead, following a disappointing loss on the road, Denver fell to last place in the division.

Here’s a look at the current AFC West standings going into Week 14.

Team Record Div. Conf.
Kansas City Chiefs 8-4 2-1 3-4
Los Angeles Chargers 7-5 2-1 5-3
Las Vegas Raiders 6-6 1-2 4-3
Denver Broncos 6-6 1-2 3-5

To keep pace in the AFC’s Wild Card race, the Broncos now have a must-win upcoming home game against the Detroit Lions, who won a game for the first time this season on Sunday.

After that, Denver will have another game with crucial Wild Card implications against the Cincinnati Bengals (7-5). That game will also be played at home.

The Broncos will then close out the season with road games against the Raiders and Chargers followed by a home game against the Chiefs. Denver still has a chance to reach the playoffs, but there’s a lot of work to be done.

AFC West standings: Broncos can jump into first with upset win in KC

The Broncos’ upcoming ‘Sunday Night Football’ showdown with the Chiefs will have huge implications in the AFC West.

The (AFC) West won’t be won in Week 13, but the Denver Broncos could jump into first place if they upset the Kansas City Chiefs on the road on “Sunday Night Football” this week.

After 12 weeks of play, the division is congested. Kansas City is No. 1 in the AFC West right now, but that could change weekly. Here’s a look at the current division standings going into Week 13.

Team Record Div. Conf.
Kansas City Chiefs 7-4 1-1 2-4
Los Angeles Chargers 6-5 2-1 4-3
Denver Broncos 6-5 1-1 3-4
Las Vegas Raiders 6-5 1-2 4-3

If the Broncos manage to upset the Chiefs on “SNF,” Denver would have a better division record and a head-to-head win over KC, which would propel the Broncos into first place in the AFC West with a 7-5 record.

After that, Denver will have another home game against the Chiefs, a road game against the Raiders and a road game against the Chargers remaining on the schedule. Those division games are shaping up to have big implications in the race to win the AFC West.

Entering the final six weeks of the season, the Broncos’ playoff hopes are still alive.
