AFC East Week 17 recap and standings: Division still not settled

What happened in the AFC East in Week 17?

Week 17 of the NFL regular season brought some of the most entertaining matchups of the year, as there were stunning results and photo finishes.

After 17 weeks, the AFC East still has just one team at the top of the division – the Miami Dolphins at 11-5.

Mike McDaniel’s team coming off of a victory over the Dallas Cowboys, traveled to Maryland where they took on the Baltimore Ravens. The first-seeded Ravens dismantled Miami’s defense, putting up 56 points with five touchdowns coming from Lamar Jackson’s arm. The Dolphins also turned the ball over three times, including two interceptions by Tua Tagovailoa that could’ve altered the course of the game.

The Buffalo Bills barely hung on for a 27-21 win over the New England Patriots despite Bill Belichick’s team committing four turnovers. Josh Allen was mediocre at best, completing just 50% of his passes for 169 yards and an interception. However, he did run well, scoring twice on the ground. Their victory earned them a one-game playoff with the Dolphins for the division in Week 18.

For New England, Bailey Zappe looked completely lost, throwing three interceptions on his 26 attempts. The running game didn’t look great either, as Ezekiel Elliott rushed for just 39 yards and a score on 14 carries. Their defense still looks decent, but the best news for them was the fact that they’re now in a three-way tie for the second pick in next year’s draft.

The New York Jets played on Thursday night, and they were beaten down by the Cleveland Browns 37-20. New York’s impressive defense allowed former Jets quarterback Joe Flacco, who’s now leading Cleveland’s offense, to throw for 309 yards and three touchdowns in a game in which he didn’t have his best target – Amari Cooper. Trevor Siemian got the start for New York, and his play left a lot to be desired. Their lone bright spot continues to be Breece Hall, who rushed for 84 yards on 6.5 yards per attempt and brought in another 42 yards and a score on nine receptions.

Week 18 AFC East matchups:

  • Miami Dolphins (11-5) vs. Buffalo Bills (10-6) – SNF
  • New York Jets (6-10) vs. New England Patriots (4-12)

AFC East Week 16 recap and standings: Dolphins clinch playoff spot

What happened in the AFC East in Week 16?

Week 16 of the NFL regular season brought some of the most entertaining matchups of the year, as there were stunning upsets and photo finishes.

After 16 weeks, the AFC East still has just one team at the top of the division – the Miami Dolphins at 11-4.

Mike McDaniel’s team, coming off of a shutout victory over the New York Jets, made it two in a row by squeaking out a win over the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas Eve. The offense and defense had their moments in the contest, but it was the special teams unit, led by Jason Sanders’ five made field goals, including three from beyond 50 yards and a game-winner, that really secured the result.

The Buffalo Bills were nearly defeated by the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday night despite the fact that their opponent was led by an interim head coach and a backup quarterback. After building a 21-13 lead after three quarters, the Bills allowed the Chargers to set up and make three field goals to take a 22-21 lead with five minutes remaining. Josh Allen then led them down the field and put Tyler Bass in position to kick a game-winner himself with under 30 seconds to go.

Robert Saleh’s Jets outlasted the Washington Commanders 30-28 on Sunday. With Trevor Siemian back under center, the Jets threw the ball 49 times, resulting in 217 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Luckily, their rushing attack was potent, as Breece Hall rushed for 95 yards and two scores on 4.8 yards per attempt. Siemian, on New York’s final drive, put Greg Zuerlein in position to kick a 54-yard field goal to give them the win, and he did so.

The New England Patriots played on Sunday night when defeated the Denver Broncos and became the fourth team in the division to win on a game-winning field goal with less than a minute to go. New England had built a 23-7 lead after scoring on a Broncos fumble on a kickoff in the third quarter. However, they surrendered two touchdowns late to Denver, forcing rookie Chad Ryland, who had already missed an extra point and a field goal earlier in the game, to seal it with a 56-yarder.

Week 17 AFC East matchups:

  • Miami Dolphins (11-4) vs. Baltimore Ravens (12-3)
  • Buffalo Bills (9-6) vs. New England Patriots (4-11)
  • New York Jets (6-9) vs. Cleveland Browns (10-5) – TNF

AFC East Week 15 recap and standings: Dolphins eliminate Jets

What happened in the AFC East in Week 15?

Week 15 of the NFL regular season brought some of the most entertaining matchups of the year, as there were stunning upsets and photo finishes.

After 15 weeks, the AFC East still has just one team at the top of the division – the Miami Dolphins at 10-4.

Mike McDaniel’s team, coming off a tough loss to the Tennessee Titans on Monday night, had a quick turnaround to prepare for the New York Jets, who had just beaten the Houston Texans the week before. Miami dominated in all three phases of the game to shut New York out 30-0, despite injuries at key positions.

The Jets, with the loss, dropped to 5-9 on the year and were officially eliminated from postseason contention. That means that Aaron Rodgers probably won’t be coming back this year, and they’ll spend the final three weeks trying to play spoiler.

Sean McDermott’s Buffalo Bills took on the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday and looked like they’ve officially turned a corner. Quarterback Josh Allen didn’t even have to play his best game for Buffalo to put a 31-10 beatdown on Dallas. They rushed the ball 47 times for an incredible 268 yards between Allen, James Cook, Ty Johnson and Latavius Murray. An inability to run the ball has been one of the Bills’ downfalls in recent years, so this is a welcome sight for them.

The New England Patriots fell to 3-11 after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs 27-17 at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. Bailey Zappe appeared to show some signs of life, but the offensive line and lack of wide receiver talent continued to be a glaring issue for Bill Belichick’s squad. The only good news for New England is that with the Carolina Panthers winning, they are just one game back of the first overall pick.

Week 16 AFC East matchups:

  • Miami Dolphins (10-4) vs. Dallas Cowboys (10-4)
  • Buffalo Bills (8-6) vs. Los Angeles Chargers (5-9)
  • New York Jets (5-9) vs. Washington Commanders (4-10)
  • New England Patriots (3-11) vs. Denver Broncos (7-7)

AFC East Week 14 recap and standings: Dolphins lead shrinks

What happened in the AFC East in Week 14?

Week 14 of the NFL regular season brought some of the craziest results of the year, as there were stunning upsets and photo finishes.

After 14 weeks, the AFC East still has just one team at the top of the division – the Miami Dolphins at 9-4.

Mike McDaniel’s team, coming off a victory over the Washington Commanders, has an extra day to prepare for their battle with the Tennessee Titans on Monday night. However, the Dolphins dealt with injuries and plenty of mistakes that led to them blowing a two-score lead with less than three minutes to go. They’ll have to focus on getting healthy and correcting some communication mistakes if they want to keep their lead in the division.

The Buffalo Bills jumped to 7-6 after downing the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Josh Allen didn’t look superhuman, but running back James Cook impressed with over 150 total yards and a score. Obviously, the thing that will be remembered most from the game was the penalty that wiped out an incredible Chiefs touchdown late. Instead, the Bills moved within two games of the Dolphins in the division.

Robert Saleh’s New York Jets had one of the most shocking games of the week, as they beat the Houston Texans 30-6 to improve to 5-8 on the year. Zach Wilson actually looked great again, throwing for over 300 yards and two scores with a 117.9 passer rating. On top of that, their defense suffocated Houston’s offense, which were without their top two receivers, starting tight end and quarterback for a portion of the game.

The New England Patriots earned just their third win of the season, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-18 on Thursday night. Backup quarterback Bailey Zappe got the nod over Mac Jones for the second straight week, as he had the offense humming in the first half, leading to three touchdowns. The defense did well to hold Pittsburgh to just one second-half touchdown to keep the lead, as New England’s offensive output was minimal after the break.

Week 15 AFC East matchups:

  • Miami Dolphins (9-4) vs. New York Jets (5-8)
  • Buffalo Bills (7-6) vs. Dallas Cowboys (10-3)
  • New England Patriots (3-10) vs. Kansas City Chiefs (8-5)

AFC East Week 13 recap and standings: Dolphins three games up

What happened in the AFC East in Week 13?

Week 13 brought another slate of NFL games that included some entertaining duels and some surprising upsets across the league.

After 13 weeks, the AFC East still has just one team at the top of the division – the Miami Dolphins at 9-3.

Mike McDaniel’s team, coming off a victory over the New York Jets on Black Friday, had some extra time to prepare for their battle with the Washington Commanders. Miami blew Washington off the field, winning 45-15, as they were essentially dominant on both sides of the ball. If their defense is going to hold teams to under 20, and their offense is going to score five touchdowns, the Dolphins are going to be tough to beat.

The Buffalo Bills remain in second place with a 6-6 record, as they had Week 13 off. However, with Miami winning, the Bills are now three games back of first place.

Robert Saleh’s New York Jets took on the Atlanta Falcons in one of the uglier games of the weekend, resulting in a loss for New York. They started Tim Boyle at quarterback before making a change to Trevor Siemian. Both quarterbacks turned the ball over once, and they were sacked four times combined. Running back Dalvin Cook also fumbled, as their offensive line helped the Jets rush for just 2.5 yards per attempt. With the loss, they may just play themselves out of contention for a wild-card spot and Aaron Rodgers returning this season.

The only game that was uglier than that was the New England Patriots battle with the Los Angeles Chargers. New England officially benched quarterback Mac Jones in favor of Bailey Zappe. That decision ultimately led to them being shut out 6-0 at Gillette Stadium. The Patriots defense continues to look solid, but their offense is horrendous. Ezekiel Elliott and Rhamondre Stevenson combined for just 91 yards on 3.5 yards per attempt while Zappe completed just 52% of his passes for 141 yards. The good thing for New England is that the Arizona Cardinals won their game over the Pittsburgh Steelers, giving the Patriots the second pick in the 2024 draft if the season ended today.

Week 14 AFC East matchups:

  • Miami Dolphins (9-3) vs. Tennessee Titans (4-8) – MNF
  • Buffalo Bills (6-6) vs. Kansas City Chiefs (8-4)
  • New York Jets (4-8) vs. Houston Texans (7-5)
  • New England Patriots (2-10) vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (7-5) – TNF

AFC East Week 12 recap and standings: Dolphins’ lead grows

What happened in the AFC East in Week 12?

Week 12 brought another slate of NFL games that included some entertaining duels and some surprising upsets across the league.

After 12 weeks, the AFC East still has just one team at the top of the division – the Miami Dolphins at 8-3.

Mike McDaniel’s team, coming off of a defeat of the Las Vegas Raiders, had a quick turnaround to prepare for the New York Jets on Friday. However, they dominated New York with their stifling defense and impressive running game. While they did suffer some losses to injury, they secured their win handily and stayed amongst the best teams in the conference.

The Jets started Tim Boyle over Zach Wilson in Week 12, hoping that a quarterback change would fix things. That wasn’t the case, as Boyle threw multiple interceptions. The battered offensive line continued to struggle, and their talented defense can only do so much to keep them in games. The loss dropped them to 4-7 in third place.

Ahead of them are the Buffalo Bills, who took on the Philadelphia Eagles, who had just one loss entering Sunday. While the Bills showed some promise, Philadelphia tied the game with a 59-yard field goal to force overtime. Then, after allowing Buffalo to kick a field goal in the extra period, the Eagles drove down the field and scored on a Jalen Hurts rushing touchdown, dropping Sean McDermott’s team to a 6-6 record and 2.5 games back of Miami.

The New England Patriots met with the New York Giants on Sunday for a matchup between two of the worst teams in the league. Bill Belichick shrouded his quarterback plans with secrecy but ultimately started Mac Jones. Jones was sat after two interceptions, and backup Bailey Zappe didn’t look much better. Still, they were able to set themselves up with a 35-yard field goal attempt by 2023 fourth-round pick Chad Ryland to force overtime. However, the rookie pulled the kick wide left and dropped New England to 2-9 and half a game back of the second pick in the 2024 draft.

Week 13 AFC East matchups:

  • Miami Dolphins (8-3) vs. Washington Commanders (4-8)
  • New York Jets (4-7) vs. Atlanta Falcons (5-6)
  • New England Patriots (2-9) vs. Los Angeles Chargers (4-7)
  • BYE WEEK: Buffalo Bills (6-6)

AFC East Week 11 recap and standings: Dolphins maintain their lead

What happened in the AFC East in Week 11?

Week 11 brought another slate of NFL games that included some entertaining duels and some surprising upsets across the league.

After 11 weeks, the AFC East still has just one team at the top of the division – the Miami Dolphins at 7-3.

Mike McDaniel’s team, coming off of their bye week, welcomed the Las Vegas Raiders to Hard Rock Stadium, who were riding a two-game winning streak. Miami’s offense struggled to find their rhythm, but their defense put on a show, helping snuff the Raiders’ attack. The victory kept the Dolphins in first place in the division and among the top teams in the conference.

The Buffalo Bills and New York Jets met for a division battle on Sunday, with Sean McDermott’s team prevailing. New York, already having an injured offensive line, lost Mekhi Becton in the contest, making it more difficult for the offense to do anything.

Zach Wilson was benched late for Tim Boyle, but it didn’t look any better. The duo was sacked six times and threw two interceptions. Garrett Wilson also lost a fumble, and Xavier Gipson gave one away on a return.

Buffalo didn’t appear to fix everything after offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey’s firing, but playing the Jets, and beating them for the first time this year, is a step in the right direction.

With the win, the Bills improved to 6-5, staying just 1.5 games behind the Dolphins, while the Jets fell to 4-6 and three games behind Miami.

Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots were off in Week 11, and they were close to owning the second pick in the draft, as the Arizona Cardinals lost to the Houston Texans, keeping them at two wins along with the Patriots. Their season is lost, and they appear to be considering a quarterback change, so the draft is all they have to look forward to.

Week 12 AFC East matchups:

  • Miami Dolphins (7-3) vs. New York Jets (4-6) – Friday
  • Buffalo Bills (6-5) vs. Philadelphia Eagles (8-1*)
  • New England Patriots (2-8) vs. New York Giants (3-8)

AFC East Week 10 recap and standings: Dolphins win during bye week

What happened in the AFC East in Week 10.

Week 10 brought another slate of NFL games that included some entertaining duels and some surprising upsets across the league.

After 10 weeks, the AFC East still has just one team at the top of the division – the Miami Dolphins at 6-3.

Mike McDaniel’s team may have been off this week, but they were the big winners in the division, as they kept their lead over the three other teams. That’s huge considering they still have three in-division battles remaining.

The second-place Buffalo Bills fell to the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football, making it two in a row for Sean McDermott’s team. Four turnovers kept Josh Allen and company from dominating as they should against a team that Miami scored 70 points on earlier in the year. Now, with a 5-5 record, the Bills have a lot of work to do if they want to win the division or even make the playoffs at this point.

Robert Saleh’s third-place New York Jets dropped their second in a row this weekend, as they were defeated by the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Neither team was overly impressive in the contest, but Josh Jacobs did rush for over 100 yards and a touchdown on 4.3 yards per carry against a defense that’s supposed to be leading them to wins. Zach Wilson is still a problem for New York’s offense, and it doesn’t look like they’re making a quarterback change any time soon.

The same can’t be said for the bottom-of-the-division New England Patriots, who were embarrassed by the Indianapolis Colts in Frankfurt, Germany on Sunday. Mac Jones threw one of the worst interceptions you’ll see in the fourth quarter, resulting in the quarterback’s benching. Then, backup Bailey Zappe, with a chance to drive down the field and win the game, faked a spike and threw a ball into triple coverage that was intercepted to end the game. They have a bye week coming up, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Jones benched going forward.

Week 11 AFC East matchups:

  • Miami Dolphins (6-3) vs. Las Vegas Raiders (5-5)
  • Buffalo Bills (5-5) vs. New York Jets (4-5)
  • BYE WEEK: Patriots

Bills’ Josh Allen on Dolphins: ‘They probably want to right their wrong’

#Bills’ Josh Allen on #Dolphins: ‘They probably want to right their wrong’ (via @TejasVemparala):

The Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills face off this Sunday since their entertaining, high-scoring 2022 Wild Card playoff game.

The pair are wrestling for control of the AFC East.

Last season’s playoff game between the two ended in a Buffalo 34-31 win at home. Considering that the Bills knocked out the Dolphins, whether revenge is on Miami’s mind has been a conversation topic and Bills quarterback Josh Allen weighed in.

“We understand that this is a team that’s playing well and they’re coming into our house.” said Allen said via video conference. “And the implications of what happened last year in the playoffs – they probably want to right their wrong.”

In that playoff contest, the Dolphins were down starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The backup quarterback Skylar Thompson, a relative unknown, got the starting nod. The Bills narrowly won.

All considered, Miami is leaning more toward Sunday just being another day at the office.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel had said that the revenge factor is not as important to his team.

“If you need to be motivated for a game like this, check your pulse.” McDaniel said.

We’ll have to watch and see if the emotional do play a part or not at Highmark Stadium in Week 4.
