Patriots have 5 players in PFF’s top 101 players

The Patriots had an impressive number of players on the list. They did have one snub, however.

The New England Patriots were not short on top-end talent in 2021 after finishing the year at 10-7 and making a playoff berth. They may have been one-and-done with a brutal loss to the Buffalo Bills. But the Patriots showed a lot of promise during their 2021 season during the first year of the Mac Jones era. Jones is not on this list, however.

Instead, it’s about his supporting cast on the offensive line and the defense. New England has no shortage of talent in those areas. So here’s a look at the Patriots who appeared on that original list. Here’s some of what they wrote on each player — along with our take.

Adrian Phillips thinks blowout playoff game didn’t show how close Patriots are to Bills

Adrian Phillips thinks the gap between the Patriots and Buffalo Bills is close.

With the New England Patriots still reeling from their AFC wild-card game loss to the Buffalo Bills, safety Adrian Phillips believes that the Patriots are closer to their AFC East rivals than many expect.

Buffalo beat New England soundly 47-17 to finish off the Patriots’ 2021 season. In a year that saw the Patriots log a 10-6 record, New England lost twice to Buffalo in roughly a month. It was part of a slide that saw them lose three out of their four final regular-season games — along with their only postseason appearance.

Despite the disappointing ending, Phillips sees the gap between the two teams as rather close. As transcribed by Ryan Hannable of WEEI, Phillips sees New England as comparable to Buffalo.

“Buffalo is a great team and what they’ve got going over there is great and they built up a nice roster, but I don’t think the gap is huge at all,” he said. “They just made the plays that were out there to be made and we didn’t make ours. It’s going to be fun for the next few years, and we’ll look to see how it is at the end of those years. I don’t think it’s a gap at all. I will always ride with what we have on this side. I think we’re better than everybody else. We just have to go out there and prove it.”

Phillips finished the year with 92 tackles, a forced fumble, and four interceptions. His performance against the Miami Dolphins in the regular season finale was his best of 2021. He recorded 11 tackles, including 10 solo tackles. In the team’s loss to Buffalo, he finished with six total tackles.

With the Buffalo Bills enjoying success over the Patriots in the post-Tom Brady era, New England will have their chances to even the playing field.

List of former Longhorns who will participate in the NFL playoffs

Texas will be well represented in this year’s NFL playoffs.

The NFL wrapped up another eventful regular season on Sunday.

The league battled COVID-19 all year long but found a way to make it to the postseason without any cancelations. It was also a successful year for many former Longhorns.

Justin Tucker, Quandre Diggs and Devin Duvernay were named to the 2022 Pro Bowl. D’Onta Foreman proved himself as a valuable running back while replacing Derrick Henry for the Titans and Colt McCoy picked up a few victories for his Cardinals.

The Wildcard round is now officially upon us as we are slated for six games this weekend.

Texas fans watching the playoffs will see some familiar faces on the field.

Of the 33 former Horns on active rosters, nine will participate in this year’s NFL playoffs. Five from the NFC and four from the AFC.

Take a look at a full list of Texas exes who will start their journey to the Lombardi trophy this weekend:

Adrian Phillips discusses extension, detailing his excitement to remain with Patriots

“It was a big weight lifted off my shoulders.”

New England Patriots safety Adrian Phillips had numerous things to be happy about this week.

The 29-year-old signed a three-year extension with the team that has a max value of $14.25 million. He also was a key contributor in the Patriots’ 50-10 rout of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Following the victory, Phillips went into more detail about his extension and the excitement that followed once it was a done deal.

“I knew the talks had been going on for a little while now, but I stayed out of it just because I wanted to work on the season,” Phillips said. “Last week they picked up a lot and then we were able to get something done. We were able to get the agreement and once I found out I was happy. It was a big weight lifted off my shoulders.”

Phillips has the third-most tackles on the team (80) and he’s tied with Kyle Dugger for the second-most interceptions (4). Phillips and Dugger will be fundamental pieces of the Patriots’ secondary for years to come now.

But, what makes him so excited about staying in Foxborough?

“Really just the culture,” Phillips said. “I’ve talked about this before, but from the outside looking in you kind of get this stigma about Foxborough, like there’s no fun here, blah, blah, blah, whatever it is. And then you get here and you see it ain’t like that at all. It’s really just hard work. You do your job, you win games, you have fun going to the postseason.

“Being able to be coached by somebody like Coach Belichick, like who doesn’t want that opportunity? He’s the greatest coach in the game, to me personally. Just being around his mind and his savvy and seeing how he operates, this is where I want to be. This is a city built on football, and I just love it. It was easy for me to be able to get something worked out to stay here.”

The Patriots have clinched a playoff spot and will face the Miami Dolphins in Week 18.

Patriots sign safety Adrian Phillips to three-year extension

The New England Patriots and Adrian Phillips reached a contract extension on Saturday.

The New England Patriots and Adrian Phillips agreed to a three-year contract extension that includes $7.25 million guaranteed, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Sirius XM’s Adam Kaplan.

The base value of the contract is $12.75 million. The value could go up to $14.25 million with incentives.

Phillips signed a two-year deal with the New England Patriots in 2020. Since signing with the team, he has become an important part of the defense, often playing in the role Patrick Chung once occupied before retiring. Phillips is third on the team with 70 tackles and has four interceptions on the season. That puts him second on the team, only behind J. C. Jackson, who has seven.

New England will take on the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday, as Phillips and the defense look to have a strong game. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.

Adrian Phillips seeing higher intensity practices with Bills approaching

Adrian Phillips has noticed more energy from the Patriots this week.

As the regular season winds down, the New England Patriots are in the thick of a playoff race. Following their loss to the Indianapolis Colts last Saturday, that race got a bit tighter. Now with the Buffalo Bills coming up next, the Patriots have been focused on putting Saturday’s difficult showing behind them.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, safety Adrian Phillips noted that there was a higher level of focus at practice this week. Mac Jones discussed the lack of intensity in practice before the loss to the Colts.

For his part, Phillips has been a key piece of the safety position. He has recorded 71 combined tackles and four interceptions so far this season. Saturday night, his impact was felt defensively as he  tallied seven tackles — his second game this season with that amount.

The Patriots and Buffalo are meeting each other for the second time in less than a month. Phillips and the rest of the New England defense will be tasked with trying to stop a Buffalo offense full of playmakers. As transcribed by Zack Cox of NESN.com, Phillips wants the team to keep pushing forward.

“You never want to lose, and you never want to focus on the lows like that, but everybody’s level of preparation has tuned up a notch,” he said. “There’s another level to it for a few reasons. We’re playing a division rivalry, and this is a huge game, not just because of what’s possibly on the line, but just because it’s the next one. We don’t want to get into a lull where we’re having a two-game, three-game losing streak.

“To kind of get hit in the mouth last week, you’ve got that bitter taste in your mouth, so everybody’s making sure they buckle down now, and they’re making sure their level of preparation is even more.”

With two more games against divisional opponents, the end of the season will be anything but a cakewalk for the Patriots.

Damien Harris, Adrian Phillips among 9 questionable Patriots for Week 15

The Patriots have uncertainty surrounding a handful of players. Mac Jones, however, was no longer on the injury report.

The New England Patriots have nine players, including running back Damien Harris (hamstring), listed as questionable for Week 15 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Quarterback Mac Jones (left thumb) and outside linebacker Chase Winovich (illness) were scratched from the injury report and should be healthy for the coming game.

The other questionable players were as follows: safety Adrian Phillips (knee), center David Andrews (shoulder), offensive lineman Yodny Cajuste (illness), defensive lineman Christian Barmore (knee), linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley (ribs), running back Brandon Bolden (knee), offensive tackle Trent Brown (calf/wrist), kicker Nick Folk (left knee).

Outside linebacker Ronnie Brown was ruled out with an illness.

New England kicks off against the Indianapolis Colts at 8:20 p.m. on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Bill Belichick says this key defender is one of Patriots’ best players

“And he almost always does the right thing.”

The New England Patriots brought in a sneaky good player with safety Adrian Phillips last season — but, it was hard for him to get recognition due to the lackluster team he was on.

Phillips, 29, played in all 16 games and finished the year with 109 tackles, along with five pass deflections and two interceptions. He’s picked up his game even more this season, as he has the third-most tackles on the team (52) and he has the second-most interceptions (4).

On Monday morning, Bill Belichick took some time out to discuss Phillips and his impact on the team.

“This is one of our best players and one of our most versatile players,” Belichick said, transcribed by NESN’s Zack Cox. “And he almost always does the right thing. When something comes up, maybe you haven’t covered it, maybe you haven’t exactly gone through that situation or that particular way of blocking — crack block or something has unfolded — he almost always does the right thing.”

Stuff happens, and he’s got a decision to make, it’s maybe a little gray, and he just does the right thing. He does what you would want him to do without really telling him exactly what to do in that situation. So all that’s impressive.”

Phillips’ best game this season came at the absolute right time. Against his former team in the Los Angeles Chargers, Phillips secured two interceptions — one returned for a touchdown. The Patriots won the game 27-24 and it was a huge turning point for a team that began 2-4 and couldn’t win close games.

“Adrian was very good around the line of scrimmage for the Chargers,” Belichick said. “In San Diego, he played in the box, he played on the edge of the defense. They played that style of defense where the safeties really played as linebackers in Coach (Gus) Bradley’s defense, and you could see his instinctiveness. But you go all the way to him at Texas and talking to his coaches back there; it was pretty much the same thing in college as it was in the NFL. Very instinctive, very high IQ, plays faster and bigger than whatever his dimensions and times are. He’s got a real high level of instinctiveness and anticipation.”

When it comes to his hands, he may be the second-best ballhawk behind J.C. Jackson in the secondary.

“He’s got excellent hands,” Belichick said. “You look at some of the interceptions he’s made for us in his career, those are really good catches that a lot of defensive players might not be able to make that turnover play. So all those things are positive, and then when he gets the opportunity to do it, he’s a good tackler. He’s got good ball awareness to cause fumbles and that kind of thing and intercept passes.”

Phillips, Kyle Dugger and Devin McCourty are key components of the secondary — Phillips just doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.

Matthew Judon had an epic quote about the Patriots’ defensive identity

He isn’t wrong, considering this group is arguably the best in the NFL right now.

Matthew Judon is everything the New England Patriots needed.

After recording a sack in the 25-0 shutout of the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night, Judon is now up to 10.5 sacks on the season. To keep that in perspective, the most sacks in a season in Patriots history is 12.5, which is at a tie with Chandler Jones and Mike Vrabel.

The Patriots defense has allowed only 13 points in the last three games and they’re quickly solidifying themselves as arguably the best group in the NFL. Over the last 19 possessions, the Patriots haven’t allowed a single point.

Following the game, Judon discussed the identity of the defense and he summed it up perfectly.
