Former Husker Adrian Martinez upsets No. 6 Oklahoma

A big upset in Norman, Oklahoma last night!

A former Nebraska Cornhusker, now Kansas State Wildcat, helped lead his team to one of the big upsets of the 2022 college football season on Saturday night. Quarterback Adrian Martinez led K-State to an upset win over the No. 6 ranked Oklahoma Sooners 41-34 in Norman. Martinez had 21 completions on 34 attempts for 234 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 21 times with 148 times and four touchdowns. When asked after the game, the former Cornhusker described the win as the most significant victory of his career.

“Without a doubt, this is No. 1,” Martinez said. “It’s still registering with me right now, just coming to that realization that it’s real, we played to the best of our abilities tonight, and we took it to them. It’s without a doubt my favorite game of all time.”

Below is a collection of social media reactions to the upset victory in Norman. Martinez will always have a connection to Husker Football but this moment is his alone. I’m happy to see someone who’s been through a lot be able to enjoy his time in the spotlight.

Social media reacts to the Oklahoma Sooners loss to Kansas State

Sooner Nation was stunned while the rest of the country was giddy over Oklahoma’s 41-34 loss to the Kansas State Wildcats.

At this point, it’s hard to argue that Kansas State and coach Chris Kleiman don’t have Oklahoma’s number after the Wildcats’ 41-34 win over the No. 6-ranked Sooners.

Kansas State has won three of the last four matchups and has a winning record at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium over the last decade.

It was a frustrating and disappointing performance from the Oklahoma Sooners at home against a team that was coming off of a loss to Tulane the week prior. Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables didn’t mince words when discussing the outing from his team on Saturday night.

“We just weren’t as efficient as we needed to be on offense, the most critical times, the most critical times on defense, we were at our worst, for whatever reason,” Venables said after the game.

Adrian Martinez played a great game, but the Sooners didn’t do themselves any favors with their inability to tackle at times or their lack of pass rush. And when the Sooners needed a stop, they came up short toward the end of the game.

Here’s how social media reacted to the Sooners’ 41-34 loss to Kansas State.

5 takeaways from the Oklahoma Sooners 41-34 loss to the Kansas State Wildcats

Despite scoring 34 points, it was a rough night all the way around as the Oklahoma Sooners drop their first Big 12 game 41-34 to Kansas State. Here are 5 takeaways from the loss.

The Oklahoma Sooners got off to a poor start and could never recover in their 41-34 loss to the Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday night. From the opening drive, the Wildcats had the upper hand.

Though Oklahoma would tie it up in the second quarter and mount a furious comeback in the second half, inconsistent offense and an inability to get off the field for the defense caused the comeback to fall short.

It was a disappointing and frustrating night as Adrian Martinez and Deuce Vaughn put on a show on the Owen Field turf. Here are five takeaways from the Oklahoma Sooners first loss of the season.

Adrian Martinez, Kansas State stun the No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners, 41-34

Adrian Martinez’s five total touchdowns and 382 yards of total offense stun No. 6 Oklahoma as the Wildcats beat the Sooners 41-34.

Kansas State came out in the first quarter and jumped to a 14-0 lead. Oklahoma made it a one-score game in the second quarter, but penalties and missed throws from quarterback Dillon Gabriel prevented the Sooners from stringing together any consistent offense in the second half, and the Oklahoma Sooners fell to Kansas State, 41-34, on Saturday night.

The Wildcats opened the scoring with a methodical 12-play, 75-yard touchdown drive capped by an Adrian Martinez six-yard touchdown run. Oklahoma was unable to respond in kind. The Wildcats scored again, this time on a seven-play, 80-yard drive culminating in a Martinez touchdown pass to Deuce Vaughn.

Oklahoma started to gain some momentum at the end of the first half when Dillon Gabriel hit a wide-open Theo Wease for a 56-yard touchdown to make it 14-7. It seemed the defense was also starting to settle; it forced back-to-back three-and-outs.

After a Kansas State punt, the Sooners produced another big play in the passing game. Gabriel found Marvin Mims deep down the sideline for a 50-yard touchdown.

After the Mims touchdown, the Sooners’ offense stalled when they crossed the 50, settling for a couple of field goals or having drives fizzle because of pre-snap penalties.

The Sooners fell behind by 14 in the fourth quarter, but a touchdown pass to Brayden Willis brought the Sooners to within seven, keeping them in the game.

The defense put Kansas State in a third-and-16 and was poised to give the Sooners offense the ball back. Then Martinez happened again.

The Wildcats went empty backfield, leaving Martinez alone. After the Sooners rushed four, Martinez bought time in the pocket before taking off downfield and picking up 55 yards, putting Kansas state inside the 10-yard line. Two plays later, Martinez plunged into the end zone for his fourth rushing touchdown of the game.

While Oklahoma made a furious effort to come back, but there wasn’t enough time on the clock with just one time out remaining.

Martinez was the story of the game. He played like an entirely different quarterback than what he had shown in the first three weeks. He was poised and calculated, pushing the ball down the field, and punishing Oklahoma’s defense as a runner.

The Sooners’ front seven struggled to get much push from the defensive line, and tackling was an issue at the linebacker and defensive back level.

Offensively, the passing game couldn’t sustain drives. Gabriel missed several throws, including a would-be touchdown to Drake Stoops and then a wide-open Stoops on a fourth down late in the game.

It’s back to the drawing board for the Oklahoma Sooners (3-1), who next face the TCU Horned Frogs on the road.

Nebraska transfer Adrian Martinez, Kansas State stun Oklahoma

Adrian Martinez led Kansas State to an upset of Oklahoma

Call it the revenge of the Cornhuskers … not exactly.

Adrian Martinez, a Nebraska transfer, led Kansas State to a 41-34 upset of Oklahoma in Norman on Saturday night.

Martinez broke a 55-yard run on a third-and-16 and then iced the game with his fourth touchdown run.

The Wildcats have beaten the Sooners in three of their last four meetings.

This was the same Oklahoma school that had crushed Martinez’s former team, the Cornhuskers, 49-14 in its last game.

Martinez was 21-of-34 passing with a TD and had 21 carries for 148 yards in a superb performance.

Martinez transferred to Kansas State after being a four-year starter during his career at Nebraska. He currently holds the school record for career total offensive yards (10,792) and the most total offensive yards per game (308.0 in 2021), He holds 16 school records for the Cornhuskers.

Martinez played in 39 games from 2018-21 in Lincoln. Overall in those four seasons, Nebraska went 15-29.

He transferred to Kansas State in December and now has the Wildcats at 3-1, having lost to Tulane.

Martinez actually played against Oklahoma in 2021 for Nebraska. He had a touchdown passing and running in a 23-16 loss.

Kansas State sliced Oklahoma’s defense, under first-year head coach Brent Venables, a defensive guru, for more than 500 yards.

5 Sooners to watch on defense against Kansas State

Oklahoma will need a solid performance from these five defensive players when they take on Kansas State.

Oklahoma’s Big 12 campaign gets underway under the lights Saturday night in what should be a competitive matchup. Oklahoma and Kansas State two have played each other fairly close over the last few years. Kansas State comes into the game on the heels of a loss while Oklahoma straps their pads up following a dismantling of their longtime rivals, the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

In recent years, Kansas State felt like a lock to push the Sooners to the brink. While that remains a possibility, if Oklahoma can take care of things on the defensive side of the ball, they’ll put themselves in a much better position to win on Saturday.

There are a handful of Oklahoma players that could play a significant role in propelling this defense to victory. Take a look at our five defensive players to watch heading into the matchup with the Wildcats.

Final thoughts on Oklahoma Sooners primetime matchup with Kansas State Wildcats

As the Oklahoma Sooners get set to take on the Kansas State Wildcats, here are this week’s final thoughts.

The opponent gets tougher as the Oklahoma Sooners get set to face the Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday night. In front of a capacity crowd under the lights, the Oklahoma Sooners will look to put on a show in their first conference game of the Brent Venables era.

Despite who the Wildcats have faced, Kansas State is the toughest opponent they’ve faced thus far.

The Wildcats pose problems on both sides of the ball that could keep this game interesting into the second half, but the Sooners have the talent and the coaching staff to earn another statement win Saturday night.

Here are this week’s final thoughts.

No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners vs. Kansas State Wildcats: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for Saturday

No. 6 Oklahoma hosts Kansas State on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action, you’ve come to the right place.

The No. 6 ranked Oklahoma Sooners take on the [autotag]Kansas State Wildcats[/autotag] on Saturday night, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The Oklahoma Sooners welcome in the alma mater of head coach Brent Venables for his first Big 12 game at the helm. Venables, who both played and coached for the Wildcats in the 80s and 90s before joining Bob Stoops’ staff in 1999.

The Sooners are coming into this primetime matchup hot, averaging 42.2 points per game after dropping 49 on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln. They’ve won each of their games by 30 points. The Sooners’ defense has been equally good, allowing just 10 points per game through three weeks.

Kansas State had a strong start to the season with a shutout of South Dakota and a blowout win over Missouri in week two. Things came to a screeching halt in week three with their 17-10 loss to Tulane.

This is Oklahoma’s toughest test of the season on both sides of the ball. Deuce Vaughn and Felix Anudike-Uzomah are two of the best players in the country. While Adrian Martinez hasn’t been trusted to push the ball down the field, he’s a player that can hurt you with his legs.

The Sooners are currently minus-13.5 point favorites over the Wildcats. Though Kansas State has been a tough matchup for the Sooners over the last few years, many believe the Sooners will win this matchup and win big.

5 bold predictions for Oklahoma’s week 4 matchup vs. Kansas State

Will the Sooners’ pass rush continue to get to the quarterback? That’s just one of five bold predictions for the Oklahoma Sooners vs. Kansas State.

Oklahoma is looking to move to 4-0 against a team in Kansas State that has made life difficult on the Sooners in recent years.

Looking back even further, Brent Venables is familiar with the Wildcats ability to play spoiler. His experience as Oklahoma’s defensive coordinator and as a coach and player at Kansas State, Venables knows what comes with K-State football.

That’s why it’s incredibly unlikely the Oklahoma Sooners would take lightly or look past Kansas State despite their loss to Tulane a week ago.

While the staff here at Sooners Wire and analysts from around the country are pretty confident that the Sooners will remain undefeated. Kansas State will pose some problems for the Sooners, especially when Deuce Vaughn gets the ball.

To help you get ready for OU-Kansas State, here are some bold predictions.

No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners vs. Kansas State Wildcats: Prediction, point spread, odds, best bet

The Oklahoma Sooners are double-digit favorites as they open Big 12 conference play at home vs. Deuce Vaughn and the Kansas State Wildcats.

The No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners play the Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday night, and if you’re looking to do some last-minute betting research, you’re in luck! We’ll give you the latest point spread, money line odds, and over/under number, as well as the information you’ll need to make the smartest bet at BetMGM.

The game starts at 7 p.m. Central and can be seen on Fox.

Oklahoma and Kansas State come into this Week 4 matchup in very different spots.

The Sooners return home after a statement-making, 49-14, win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Wildcats head on the road following a disappointing 17-10 loss to Tulane.

As we saw in 2021, Tulane’s a well-coached team with some talented players. While Kansas State has some talent as well, this seems to be a mismatch.

Quarterback Adrian Martinez is averaging fewer yards per attempt than running back Deuce Vaughn. There seems to be little trust in Martinez to throw the ball. He’s averaging just 4.6 yards per attempt and has only thrown for an average of 101.33 yards per game through three weeks. Now the Wildcats haven’t needed him to throw much, but when they have asked him to throw, he hasn’t been able or willing to push the ball down the field.

Vaughn is a fantastic player, one of the best in the country. But he’s not enough for the Wildcats to win this game. Kansas State will have to get players such as Malik Knowles involved in the passing game to keep up with the Sooners’ high-octane offensive attack.

Oklahoma will have a defensive plan to slow down Vaughn and when Martinez is forced to throw in obvious passing situations, the Sooners’ pass rush will put the pressure on.

Dillon Gabriel has a sharp week and the Sooners continue to keep defenses guessing with their balanced offensive attack.

Advice and prediction

Though the Oklahoma Sooners and the Kansas State Wildcats have played several close games in recent years, the Sooners come in on a roll on both sides of the ball.

Their decimation of Nebraska should not be taken lightly. The Cornhuskers have some really good offensive weapons, and the Sooners held them to seven points until a garbage time touchdown provided the final score.

Kansas State may keep this game close in the first quarter, but as we’ve seen from the Sooners, they play great heading into halftime and coming out of the third quarter.

Oklahoma’s offensive weapons overwhelm a Kansas State defense that hasn’t really been tested, and the defense slows down Deuce Vaughn for another impressive win for the Sooners.

The Sooners are 2-1 against the point spread under Brent Venables. They narrowly missed the cover in their Week 2 33-3 win against Kent State. The Sooners were driving late in the game. Facing a fourth down, they presumably could have tried for a long field goal. However, Brent Venables opted to try for the first down. The Sooners didn’t pick up the necessary yardage, which led to the final margin.

Look for the Sooners to keep the edge that they had facing Nebraska last week and easily cover the minus-13 points from Bet MGM.

Take the Sooners minus the points, but stick with the under again this week. Kansas State doesn’t have the offensive firepower to play catchup with the Sooners.

Prediction: 42-17

Record against the spread in 2022: 5-1.
