Seahawks defense will be tested by these upcoming QBs

The Seattle Seahawks defense has been Kryptonite for opposing quarterbacks throughout their perfect 3-0 start to begin the 2024 NFL season. In Sunday’s dominant 24-3 victory over the Miami Dolphins, Macdonald’s unit held backup quarterbacks Tim Boyle and Skylar Thompson to 140 net passing yards and zero touchdowns. They were also sacked six combined times and converted just 1-of-15 third and fourth down attempts.

The Seahawks currently lead the league in quarterback rating (QBR) allowed (24.4) by a comfortable margin, according to Brady Henderson. It’s worth acknowledging the Seahawks have accumulated that dominant number by playing against bad quarterbacks. In Week 1, it was the first career start for Denver Broncos rookie QB Bo Nix. They saw Jacoby Brissett and the New England Patriots in Week 2, and aforementioned backups Boyle and Thompson in Week 3.

Not exactly a murderer’s row of quarterbacks.

That dominance is going to be tested in the coming weeks. The Seahawks are about to face a gauntlet of high-end quarterbacks on their upcoming schedule. The next six they’ll face are Jared Goff, Daniel Jones, Brock Purdy, Kirk Cousins, Josh Allen, and Matthew Stafford. Jones notwithstanding, that’s quite the list.

That list includes the first (Allen) and fourth (Purdy) ranked quarterbacks in QBR, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Goff is off to a disappointing start, but he’s overseen an explosive Lions offense two consecutive campaigns in a row. Seattle’s defense is about to face some legitimate tests for arguably the first time this season.

How they respond will be telling.

Seahawks defense ranks top 5 in 3 most important statistical categories

The Seattle Seahawks defense put forth another downright dominant performance in Sunday’s 24-3 blowout Week 3 victory over the Miami Dolphins. Mike Macdonald’s unit took full advantage of an opportunity to play against backup quarterbacks Tim Boyle and Skylar Thompson. The Seahawks held the Dolphins to a combined 1-of-15 on third and fourth down, 65 net rushing yards, and 205 total yards.

Seattle forced the Dolphins to punt six times (in addition to three failed fourth-down attempts). They also accumulated six sacks and forced three fumbles (the Dolphins luckily recovered them all). The Dolphins offense was outmatched in every phase.

Two contests occurred on Monday Night Football. Week 3 concluded with the Washington Commanders upsetting the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Buffalo Bills swept aside the Jacksonville Jaguars. League-wide statistics have been updated as a result.

The Seahawks defense currently ranks first in passing yards allowed (132.3) per game, second in total yards allowed (248.7), and fourth in points allowed per contest (14.3).

Only four NFL defenses have accumulated more sacks than Seattle’s 11 QB takedowns. If there’s an area for improvement, it’s in the turnover department. Macdonald’s defense hasn’t been opportunistic enough. They’re -1 having forced three turnovers versus four giveaways.

Macdonald oversaw a Baltimore Ravens defense last season that led the NFL in points allowed per contest (16.5), sacks (60) and takeaways (31) as John Harbaugh’s defensive coordinator. Perhaps Seattle’s early-season defensive dominance should come as no surprise. They’ve taken on the identity of their first-year head coach.

ESPN: Seahawks interested in free agent DT Johnathan Hankins

The Seahawks are interested in free agent defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, according to a report by Brady Henderson at ESPN.

The Seahawks are interested in free agent defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, according to a report by Brady Henderson at ESPN.

Hankins (6-foot-2, 320 pounds) would bring a ton of experience to Seattle’s interior defensive line rotation. Originally a second-round pick by the Giants back in 2013, he has appeared in 152 regular season games in his career, starting 134 of them. All together, he has totaled 403 tackles, 17.5 sacks, 50 quarterback hits and 39 tackles for a loss.

Hankins played the last season and a half for the Cowboys, where his position coach was Seattle’s new defensive coordinator Aden Durde.

While his grades have been on the decline for a while, Hankins has generally been a two-down defender in his career. If the Seahawks do sign him he would project as a backup behind starters Leonard Williams, Jarran Reed and Dre’Mont Jones.

There will be a ton of new faces on the sidelines for the Seahawks this coming season.

There will be a ton of new faces on the sidelines for the Seahawks this coming season. In addition to an ongoing youth movement on the roster, Seattle has turned over its coaching staff in a massive way this offseason. At last count new head coach Mike Macdonald has reportedly hired 16 new assistants, with the only holdover from Pete Carroll’s staff being Karl Scott.

While some of them come with a ton of experience at the pro level, that’s not the case for their offensive, defensive and special teams coordinators – none of whom have held those jobs in the NFL before. Here’s a clip the team shared on Twitter of their three new coordinators answering questions submitted by fans.

Aden Durde on defensive communication, Mike Macdonald and more

Watch: New Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde talks about defensive communication and philosophy, head coach Mike Macdonald and more.

Nepotism is popular in just about every industry and football coaching is no different. Sometimes getting a job in the NFL comes down to who you know far more than what you actually know about the game. There are exceptions to the rule, though. It appears that new Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald might be one of them.

Apparently Macdonald had no previous relationship with former Cowboys defensive line coach Aden Durde. Even though they had never met, Durde reportedly knocked the interview out of the park and got himself hired as defensive coordinator. Here’s what Durde told Seattle media about Macdonald and his defensive philosophy when he spoke with them on Thursday.

Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde was ‘born for football’

The biggest unknown in the bunch is defensive coordinator Aden Durde.

As Seahawks fans get to know their new head coach Mike Macdonald, one thing is becoming very clear early on – Macdonald is all about trying different things and being open to new ideas. He has reinforced these themes in every conversation he’s had with the media since he was hired and that philosophy is also manifesting itself on his coaching staff.

One of the most interesting things about the growing group is that all three of Macdonald’s coordinators do not have any coordinator experience at the NFL level. The biggest unknown in the bunch is defensive coordinator Aden Durde, who just spent three seasons working under Dan Quinn as the Cowboys’ defensive line coach. Durde has also put in time with the Falcons in a variety of different roles.

7 quotes from Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald in Monday ESPN interview

Macdonald had several interesting things to say during his interview…

For years former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll made regular appearances on Seattle’s local ESPN radio affiliate (710 AM) on Monday mornings. It sounds like the team’s new head coach Mike Macdonald might be continuing that tradition, as he called into the station today.

Macdonald had several interesting things to say during his interview about his coaching staff and the direction of the team. Here are seven quotes from that conversation.

Report: Cowboys DL coach Aden Durde to become Seahawks defensive coordinator

From @ToddBrock24f7: The English-born Durde has been an up-and-comer in the coaching ranks and interviewed for the Dallas DC position just filled by Mike Zimmer.

Mike Zimmer hasn’t even been formally announced yet as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator, but he’s already got a new spot on his staff to fill.

Defensive line coach Aden Durde will be leaving Dallas to become the next defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, according to a Friday afternoon report from NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

The 44-year-old had interviewed for a promotion to the defensive coordinator role in Dallas after Dan Quinn left to take over the Commanders.

The English-born Durde coached under Quinn for three seasons in Atlanta before joining his Cowboys staff in 2021.

He’ll now take over the defensive side of things for new Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald. The 36-year-old Macdonald has said that he plans to retain defensive play-calling duties on game day. Leslie Frazier, the longtime defensive-minded coaching veteran, is also on staff in Seattle as an assistant head coach.

Durde has been considered an up-and-comer within the league’s coaching ranks, participating in both the Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Coaching Fellowship early in his career and the Coach Accelerator program last spring.

In Dallas, Zimmer will now look to install a new defensive line coach to replace Durde and a new defensive passing game coordinator to replace Joe Whitt Jr., who followed Quinn to Washington for the defensive coordinator role there.

Seahawks hiring Aden Durde as their defensive coordinator

Slowly but surely, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald is filling out his coaching staff for the 2024 sason.

Slowly but surely, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald is filling out his coaching staff for the 2024 sason.

According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the team intends to hire Cowboys defensive line coach Aden Durde as their new defensive coordinator.

Durde played linebacker in his time and then got his start coaching with the Falcons in 2018 as their defensive quality control coach. After a couple years in that position, he moved up to outside linebackers coach. From there he jumped ship to the Cowboys, where he served under defensive coordinator Dan Quinn the last three years as their defensive line coach.

Durde will be easing in to his new role. In his introductory press conference, Macdonald told reporters that he would be calling the defensive plays “for now,” or until his defensive coordinator is ready to take over.
