Most intriguing transfer portal options at center

Most intriguing transfer portal options at center #GoBucks

We already broke down our expectations for how Ohio State could handle the quarterback position and then dove into the possible running backs. We also and recently covered the wide receiver position (if things break a certain way), tight ends, and offensive tackle, and guards, but next on the list is the center position.

This list means a whole lot less since the commitment of a former Alabama Crimson Tide starter, but I already started this piece and watched all of the players listed, so you get to see it, but lucky for us the addition was a HUGE one and that talented player makes an appearance on this list.

The likelihood of the Buckeyes adding another anchor to the offensive line is slim to none, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see another player with starting experience at center be added and moved to guard. Most people are expecting another addition to the offensive line and that means there is still an opportunity for the guys below.

Clemson Transfer OL Target Commits to Arkansas

Clemson has struck out on all their offensive line transfer targets.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson football program tried to be more active in the transfer portal, but they struck out on all of their offensive line transfer targets.

Clemson was in the hunt for offensive lineman Addison Nichols but failed to land him. Nichols announced Tuesday via social media that he has committed to play at Arkansas next season. He was the final transfer target the Tigers had on the offensive line.

Nichols visited Clemson and Arkansas last weekend with the Razorbacks, who had the better pitch for the transfer. As a recruit in the 2022 class, Nichols ranked as the No. 6 interior offensive lineman and No. 143 overall prospect.

We shouldn’t expect much noise from the Tigers in the portal after this one.

Glen Elarbee discusses development of offensive lineman Addison Nichols

Tennessee offensive line coach Glen Elarbee discusses the development of offensive lineman Addison Nichols.

Tennessee practiced for the fifth time during fall training camp on Monday.

Third-year offensive line coach Glen Elarbee met with media following practice.

He discussed the development of redshirt freshman offensive lineman Addison Nichols.

“He’s doing good,” Elarbee said. “He had a better day today. He’s still roaming between center and left guard. I think all of our centers have to do a better job snapping the football right now, but that’s kind of the start of camp and spring any time, but we’re working to correct that as we speak.”

The 6-foot-5, 327-pound Nichols appeared in two games for the Vols in 2022. He played eight offensive snaps versus UT Martin and four against Ball State.

Nichols earned 2022 SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll honors.

Josh Heupel discusses Tennessee’s center position after first scrimmage

Josh Heupel discusses Tennessee’s center position after the Vols’ first spring scrimmage.

Tennessee scrimmaged for the first time during spring practices Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

Spring practices will conclude April 15 with the Vols’ annual Orange & White Game at Neyland Stadium.

Following the Vols’ scrimmage, third-year head coach Josh Heupel met with media.

Heupel discussed Tennessee’s center position headlined by 6-foot-3, 305-pound senior Cooper Mays.

“We don’t ever want to miss Cooper,” Heupel said. “That’s a guy in the middle that’s playing a lot of football, and he’s a great leader for us inside of our program.

“Addison (Nichols) and Vysen (Lang) have to continue to grow and step up. There have been some really positive things from them in the first seven days and I’m excited to go back and watch the tape. We’re going to need those two guys to grow on the back half of spring ball.”

Glen Elarbee details Addison Nichols’ progression during fall camp

Glen Elarbee details freshman offensive lineman Addison Nichols’ progression during fall camp.

Tennessee practiced for the fourth time during fall training camp Thursday.

Following practice, second-year offensive line coach Glen Elarbee met with media. He discussed the progression of freshman offensive lineman Addison Nichols from spring practices to fall training camp.

“I think all of the freshmen are a lot different, him for sure,” Elarbee said of Nichols. “I think the game has slowed down a lot for him. When he makes a mistake, he already knows it versus having to go into the film room, watch it and talk about it. It’s instantaneous. ‘Man, I should have called this or I should have done this.’

“Now, the challenge for him, is he’s taking a few reps with two’s and starting to move and take some reps at different positions. Handling all of that mentally and the physical part of starting to go against better bodies, the technique has to be a little cleaner. The play has to be a little faster. He’s done a great job. It’s a lot on a freshman.”

The 6-foot-5, 318-pound Nichols enrolled at Tennessee in January and took part in spring practices.

Elarbee discussed where Nichols is currently playing on the offensive line.

“He took reps everywhere during the summer,” Elarbee said. “In fall camp, it’s been center and guard mainly.”
