Adam Wainwright surprised everyone by singing the Cardinals’ Opening Day national anthem

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright sang a wonderful rendition of the national anthem on Opening Day.

Outgoing St. Louis Cardinals star pitcher Adam Wainwright pulled off quite an unexpected feat for his very last Opening Day start.

On Thursday, Wainwright sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of St. Louis’ afternoon tilt against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Showing off his pipes, Wainwright sang the national anthem with aplomb, backed by a small group of folks with instruments. As far as athletes singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” goes, this one is definitely toward the top of the list.

Cardinals fans really did get an unexpected treat as the longtime franchise pitcher gave them one last Opening Day surprise before he retires after the 2023 season.

As if Cardinals fans didn’t have enough reasons to love Wainwright, he can now add “national anthem singer” to his long list of accomplishments while sporting St. Louis red.

Opening Day is one of the best pastimes in baseball, and Wainwright sure gave those in attendance for Thursday’s game more than what they bargained for.

Adam Wainwright offered amazing insight during his mic’d-up bullpen session and MLB fans loved it

This was awesome to listen to.

Sunday night’s ESPN telecast of the St. Louis Cardinals’ matchup with the Atlanta Braves was delayed about an hour due to rough weather around Busch Stadium. But credit to ESPN: They turned the delay into some incredible television with the help of Adam Wainwright.

Once the tarp was finally cleared and the game was nearing first pitch, a mic’d-up Wainwright went to the bullpen give a live interview as he was going through his regular pregame routine. The challenge of a rain day impacting a pitcher’s routine came up in the conversation, and that was when Wainwright offered some great insight while continuing his warmup pitches.

Wainwright said:

“Routine is great, as long as it doesn’t become superstition. If you’re out there thinking you gotta do exactly the same thing every time to have success, that’s making you a weaker competitor. If they told me right now I had eight pitches to get loose, I could do that. Because you are what your brain tells you you are.”

When it comes to using mic’d-up players in broadcast, it doesn’t get much better than that. Wainwright’s commentary legitimately added value to the broadcast. MLB fans certainly appreciated the whole interview as well.

Adam Wainwright may have just outed his teammates as flat Earth truthers

Is he joking?

Let’s start off by saying: I think Adam Wainwright is kidding here? But I can’t completely tell.

The longtime St. Louis Cardinals pitcher was on the mic for FOX Sports during the NLDS matchup between the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins, and in the middle of Thursday’s Game 3, he informed viewers that he “had to battle half my team thinking the Earth is flat this year, and they think we’ve never been to the moon and all kinds of crazy stuff. I’ve got a bunch of Flat Earthers.” He added that Paul DeJong, “smartest guy on the team,” is a Flat Earther.

That’s where I think the joking comes in. Per an MLB.com story from 2018:

A new Topps Futures Star card released last week describes DeJong as “a lifelong science ‘nut,’ who “spent the offseason applying his avocation to his profession.” The blurb cites DeJong’s offseason work with Dr. Lawrence Rocks, a renowned chemist who is also the father of his agent, Burton Rocks. By making DeJong’s passion public, they hope the card will encourage young baseball fans to pursue science as an off-the-field interest as well.

Also, the aforementioned Burton Rocks denied what Wainwright said was true:

We’ve been over this — maybe let’s not even joke about this right now.
