The New Orleans Saints promoted two players from their practice squad on Saturday, adding veteran defensive lineman Margus Hunt and wide receiver Bennie Fowler Jr. to their Week 1 game day roster. Both players should be expected to suit up for Sunday’s season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

One of the changes the NFL adopted this summer in its new collective bargaining agreement with the players union is an expanded active roster on game days, which allows teams to activate two players from the practice squad for a game before they revert back on the following day. Teams are required to promote one player from the practice squad, but can call up a second member if they’ve already dressed eight offensive linemen.

While this isn’t the same thing as a real expanded roster to 55 players, it functions very similarly. The new CBA does account for roster expansion in the years ahead, but the NFL is determined to get there incrementally.

Anyway: Hunt should be a welcome addition in the wake of Marcus Davenport’s injury, putting the eighth-year veteran into the lineup. Hunt has appeared in 95 games in the NFL and should fit right in across from Cameron Jordan. If Fowler is going to also dress out for this game, it means the Saints would have six wide receivers activated: starters Michael Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, third-year pro Tre’Quan Smith, and core special teamers Deonte Harris and Marquez Callaway (a rookie out of Tennessee who flashed as a gunner and return man).

The Saints must be very judicious in how they use these practice squad promotions moving forward. Each member of the practice squad may only be called up twice in a season (including the playoffs) or else they have to be signed to the 53-man roster.

On the other side of the field, the Buccaneers have promoted two of their own practice squad players: cornerback Mazzi Wilkins and wide receiver Cyril Grayson Jr. Grayson, a former LSU Tigers track and field star, spent training camp with the Saints last year before showing out for Tampa Bay as a returns specialist.

Johnson Bademosi passes physical, activated from Saints PUP list

The New Orleans Saints activated veteran cornerback Johnson Bademosi from the physically unable to perform list after he passed his physical

One member of the New Orleans Saints has gotten healthy: veteran cornerback Johnson Bademosi was activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on Friday after passing his physical. He had initially been designated to the PUP list after failing his entry physical due to a late-season foot injury. Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football first reported his activation.

Bademosi re-signed with the Saints earlier this year; before that, he logged 110 snaps in six games, taking 109 snaps on special teams with the punt and kick coverage units. With nine years of NFL experience behind him, he has the resume to again make the team, and now his body is healthy enough to allow him to compete for a roster spot.

That leaves just linebacker Kiko Alonso on the PUP list, who was designated to it along with Bademosi two weeks ago. Alonso has been recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in the Saints’ postseason loss to the Minnesota Vikings, and would be a favorite to start next to Demario Davis at linebacker if he were healthy. But he has to bide his time in the trainers’ room until he’s cleared to return to play.

Lions activate Romeo Okwara, Jalen Elliott, waive Jeremiah Dinson

The Detroit Lions announced they have activated Romeo Okwara from NFI, Jalen Elliott from reserve/COVID-19, and waived Jeremiah Dinson.

The Detroit Lions announced they have activated defensive end Romeo Okwara from the non-football injury list (NFI), undrafted safety Jalen Elliott from reserve/COVID-19 list, and waived undrafted rookie safety Jeremiah Dinson.

Okwara returning from the NFI list couldn’t come at a better time as the Lions will begin padded practices on Monday and only had two EDGE rushers healthy on the roster: Trey Flowers and Julian Okwara. Second year EDGE Austin Bryant is still on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list but there have been no updates on his status at this time.

Elliott was originally flagged on the opening day of COVID-19 testing and remained out of the facility until today. According to the NFL/NFLPA agreement, it means has been symptom-free for 72 hours and received clearance from the team’s head physician.

The Lions have now returned every player on their reserve/COVID list and now have strung together 12 straight days of tests, without having to place any additional players on the list.

Dinson is the first undrafted free agent rookie to be released from the Lions roster this season, despite a series of roster moves last weekend. It’s a tough environment to succeed in, with no preseason games to prove themselves, and for a player who likely needed to show his value on special teams.

Seahawks officially activate Ethan Pocic back from injured reserve

The Seattle Seahawks have officially activated offensive lineman Ethan Pocic back from injured reserve and placed Rashaad Penny on the IR.

The Seattle Seahawks officially activated offensive lineman Ethan Pocic back to the roster from the injured reserve. Pocic, who was placed on IR Week 6 with a back injury, became eligible to return after missing the requisite next eight games of the regular season.

“He and Joey [Hunt] could both play center, which was really a bonus to us, as well as Ethan has played both guard spots, and he could play tackle if he needed to in an emergency,” coach Pete Carroll said after Friday’s practice. “His versatility has always been a great strength, all the way back to when he had done all of that in college as well. That was always the positive that he brought that was unique for him.”

The roster move was expected as Pocic had returned to practice following the team’s win over Minnesota. Pocic has appeared in just two regular-season games this year.

To make room for Pocic on the 53-man squad, running back Rashaad Penny was placed on the injured reserve. Expected to undergo ACL surgery in the near future, Penny’s season is now officially over.

Report: Seahawks tight end Ed Dickson headed back to injured reserve

In an unexpected turn of events, Seahawks TE Ed Dickson – who was just activated this week – could be headed back to the injured reserve.

Just days after the Seattle Seahawks activated tight end Ed Dickson back to the 53-man roster, he might be headed back to the injured reserve.

A report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler indicates that’s exactly what is likely to happen.

“Seahawks expected to place TE Ed Dickson back on IR, according to sources,” Fowler tweeted early Thursday evening. “Dickson was activated this week but there’s concern over his recovery from injury.”

This report contradicts what coach Pete Carroll had said earlier in the week – that Dickson would actually be able to carry a full workload Sunday against the Eagles.

“He’s going to play a regular load if the week works out fine,” Carroll said Wednesday. “He’s been conditioning for a long time. He’s been practicing with us for quite a while. He should be ready to go. Weight’s in a good spot. He looks like he’s in good shape. He won’t play the whole game because we’ll be moving guys in and out. We expect him to play a regular role.”

If the Seahawks do place Dickson back on the injured reserve, they will undoubtedly have to active Tyrone Swoopes up from the practice squad.

This story is continuing to develop.

Tight end Ed Dickson expected to see regular workload in Philadelphia

Activated back to the roster from the injured reserve, Seahawks tight end Ed Dickson is expected to see a full workload against the Eagles.

The Seattle Seahawks will be getting some extra help at the tight end position now that Ed Dickson has been officially activated back to the 53-man roster from the injured reserve.

The timing is critical for Seattle with fellow tight end Luke Willson battling a hamstring issue.

“It was a great time for him to be available to us,” coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday. “He wanted to get back a couple weeks ago. We couldn’t fit it in. Luke is kind of opening the door for him. I know you guys are probably wondering to ask about – because he has a hamstring, we can ask about that. Luke has been such an extraordinary healer over the years that I know there’s no category for it, but we’re going to call him probable. Even though it doesn’t exist, you never know.

“Ed coming back is great. He’s really excited to contribute and help out.”

Dickson has yet to see a game this season, but he looks to figure immediately into the plan this week in Philadelphia.

“He’s going to play a regular load if the week works out fine,” Carroll confirmed. “He’s been conditioning for a long time. He’s been practicing with us for quite a while. He should be ready to go. Weight’s in a good spot. He looks like he’s in good shape. He won’t play the whole game because we’ll be moving guys in and out. We expect him to play a regular role.”

The Seahawks and Eagles are set to square off Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. PT.
