A two-game winning streak has Notre Dame trending in a small but positive direction, and Wednesday will give it the opportunity to sweep its three-game homestand when Pittsburgh comes to South Bend. The series between the Irish (13-8, 4-6) and Panthers (14-8, 5-6) goes back to 1927, and it’s the seventh most prolific series in Notre Dame history. The current ACC rivals also duked it out as members of the Big East.

John Mooney continues to approach personal milestones and climb lists. He needs only six rebounds to reach 800 for his career and become the sixth Notre Dame player under Mike Brey to achieve that milestone. With one more double-double this season, he’ll have 18, tying Bob Arnzen during the 1968-69 season for 13th most in a single campaign.

T.J. Gibbs has 1,443 career points and will catch Chris Quinn for 19th on Notre Dame’s scoring list. With 111 career blocks, Juwan Durham is five away from tying Jack Cooley on the program’s all-time list.

Notre Dame Women’s Basketball: Irish Down Yellow Jackets

Notre Dame showed it was ready for Georgia Tech and its second-ranked defense with a 59-51 road win Sunday. The Yellow Jackets (14-8, 5-6) entered the contest allowing only 50.6 points a game, but in this case, it was the Irish (8-14, 3-7) allowing …

Notre Dame showed it was ready for Georgia Tech and its second-ranked defense with a 59-51 road win Sunday. The Yellow Jackets (14-8, 5-6) entered the contest allowing only 50.6 points a game, but in this case, it was the Irish (8-14, 3-7) allowing that many points.

Midway through the third quarter, the Irish broke a 33-all tie and went a 9-2 run to provide the game’s first lead of larger than four points. Notre Dame then began the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run. It allowed only one field goal over the previous 10 minutes before a media timeout at the 4:52 mark. Jasmine Carson got Georgia Tech within seven by scoring eight consecutive points, but the Irish held off the rally with a few clutch plays and were home free for the win.

Mikki Vaughn scored a career-high 20 points while shooting 10 of 15 from the field and bringing down seven rebounds. Destinee Walker scored 15, and Katlyn Gilbert had 11 points and five assists.

Notre Dame Basketball: Irish Seek Winning Streak

Notre Dame hasn’t won two in a row since beating Alabama A&M on Dec. 29 and Syracuse on Jan. 4. After defeating Wake Forest on Wednesday, the Irish (12-8, 3-6) will try to start a new winning streak against Georgia Tech (10-11, 4-6) on Saturday. It …

It will be the middle of a three-game homestand for the Irish.

This will be the first game in which T.J. Gibbs enters action as the Irish’s all-time leading scorer in regular-season ACC games. It took him 61 games to score 761 points, 11 games fewer than it took Steve Vasturia, the previous record-holder, to reach his mark of 739.

While Notre Dame will look to improve its ACC record Saturday, it also will be a day for celebration. Kelly Tripucka, who scored 1,719 points over his Irish career, will be inducted into the Purcell Pavilion Ring of Honor at halftime. Tripucka will be the ninth person to receive the highest honor the program can bestow upon a former student-athlete or coach.

Notre Dame Basketball: Irish Defeat Demon Deacons

A 90-80 win over Wake Forest on Wednesday may not seem like much, but Notre Dame needed it to keep the pressure on the rest of the ACC. The Irish (12-8, 3-6) trailed the Demon Deacons (9-11, 2-8) by five at halftime, but a second half in which they …

A 90-80 win over Wake Forest on Wednesday may not seem like much, but Notre Dame needed it to keep the pressure on the rest of the ACC. The Irish (12-8, 3-6) trailed the Demon Deacons (9-11, 2-8) by five at halftime, but a second half in which they scored 54 points and shot 53.1 percent from the field allowed them to come back and pull out the double-digit victory.

After breaking a 43-all tie with a layup from Andrein White, the Deacons never led again after Rex Pflueger hit a 3-pointer to put the Irish in front. Though Notre Dame saw a 12-point lead get whittled down to three, that was as close as it got the rest of the way.

T.J. Gibbs led the Irish with 23 points. John Mooney got back in the double-double column with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Together, the two combined to make all 13 of their free throws. Notre Dame got good bench production from Nate Laszewski and Dane Goodwin, who had 18 and 14 points, respectively.

Notre Dame Basketball: Dealing With the Deacons

After dealing with the ACC’s wrath for Mike Brey calling out its officiating, Notre Dame will get back to action Wednesday when Wake Forest comes to South Bend. The Irish (11-8, 2-6) need some luck after losing four of their past five games, and the Demon Deacons (9-10, 2-7) might be the antidote they seek.

While John Mooney no longer has his 12-game double-double streak intact, program history still can be made Tuesday. T.J. Gibbs needs only two points to pass Steve Vasturia as the Irish’s all-time leading scorer in ACC regular-season games. It would take him 11 fewer games than it took for Vasturia to reach his mark.

Keep an eye on Dane Goodwin, who has scored in double figures in each of Notre Dame’s past four games.  With an 11.9 scoring average, he’s the only ACC player to average double figures while starting less than three games. As far as points scored only in games off the bench, Goodwin is fourth in the conference at 12.1 points a game.

ACC Fines Notre Dame, Reprimands Brey After Rant

Everyone knows the officials screwed up. Why can’t that part at least be admitted or acknowledged?

Good morning and happy Monday. If you missed it over the weekend Mike Brey was none too pleased over how Saturday night’s loss at Florida State was officiated.

The Fighting Irish lost a close one in Tallahassee and now the university has to pay for Brey’s outburst.

In a statement released by the Atlantic Coast Conference Monday morning the following has been handed down:

-The ACC issues a public reprimand of Brey for his comments because he violated the ACC sportsmanship policy.

-The league also handed Notre Dame a $20,000 fine for the violation.

-The ACC also considers this matter closed and will have no further comment.

Listen, Notre Dame got to the free throw line more than Florida State did Saturday. I don’t think any official went in with the idea of fixing things to make sure an upset was avoided.

The thing that bothers me the most isn’t as much an ACC problem as it is a sports problem. Officials clearly messed up like they do in any league or level of play and anyone with a functioning pair of eyes could see it. Yet when no comment is made about Brey in this instance having a point, it feels like complete propaganda.

You and I watch that showing by the officials and know it was awful. Joe in accounting who doesn’t watch basketball even knows the officials were brutal. So what then would the harm be in at least releasing something in that statement that read along the lines of “The ACC is reviewing the officials performance from Saturday’s game”?

Everyone knows the officials screwed up. Why can’t that part at least be admitted or acknowledged? I say that in regards to strictly officiating, not in Brey’s comments about the league having it out for Notre Dame.

I think I speak for most college basketball observers when I say that officiating in the game is awful. I don’t like to play the blame game but I do feel like just flipping on a random Big Ten game in the middle of the week will give multiple occurrences where you ask yourself “what the heck was that?” in regards to a call.

Why can’t that at least be acknowledged instead of sports organizations pushing their propaganda? Instead it comes off to me as treating viewers and fans as if they’re stupid.

Big Ten Bowl Impact: Michigan State vs Wake Forest

We look back on the Pinstripe Bowl between Michigan State and Wake Forest and see how it impacted both the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

With the 2019 college footballs season complete, we look back on how the Big Ten did in bowl games.

As we go through all the bowls, in no particular order, we will focus on two main things:

1. How did the bowl performance end the 2019 season? Was it a fitting end or a poor performance, etc.
2. What impact, if any, will it have on the 2020 season.

Now that we’ve gone through all four Big Ten losses (not including the CFP), let’s move on to the wins.

2019 Pinstripe Bowl: Michigan State vs Wake Forest

The matchup

This was going to be a fun one coming in. Wake Forest had a powerful offense coming in, and Michigan State entered with an elite defense, as always. It was strength vs strength and weakness vs weakness. Who would prevail? Would Michigan State get much-needed stops? Would the Spartan offense finally do, well, anything? Could the Spartans atone for an utterly embarrassing quality of play in last year’s bowl game? We would very quickly find out that the offense absolutely could work.

What went right

The offense was explosive, and Michigan State won the game. Ultimately, those are the two most important things from this game. The defense held Wake Forest relatively in check, though it did give up some explosive plays, which a Mark Dantonio defense really doesn’t like doing. All in all, the stats and play-by-play of this game show a very positive showing for Michigan State. 320 passing yards is an especially important stat, and just makes fans wonder where that was hiding all season.

What went wrong

Mistakes almost cost the team this game. Michigan State’s final four possessions (not counting the final one, which was one first down then knees) were a three-and-out, a lost fumble, another lost fumble, then a missed chip shot field goal. This game should have been a blowout in Michigan State’s favor. Instead, the game was just a much-needed bowl win with a much-needed good offensive showing. But by all rights, this should not have been close in the fourth quarter. Instead, Wake Forest had the ball with a chance to win in the final three minutes of the game.
