The Notre Dame women’s soccer team looks to get back above .500 when they host Boston College on Thursday.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame women’s soccer team is back on campus to kick off its home slate of games this fall on Thursday night against the Boston College Eagles. After going 1-1 in the opening weekend of the season on the road, the Irish begin a four-game homestand that will occur over the next few weeks. Thursday’s match will be the second nationally televised game for the Irish, as the game will air on the ACC Network.

KNOW THE OPPONENT: BOSTON COLLEGE EAGLES

  • The Irish will renew acquaintances with a conference foe that they have not faced since 2015 in Boston College.
  • The Irish own a 12-1-1 record all time against the Eagles and in their most recent game against Boston College, Notre Dame came away with a 2-0 win at Alumni Stadium on Oct. 11, 2015.
  • The two goals from the Irish came from twin sisters Taylor and Kaitlin Klawunder for Notre Dame’s 10th win of the season.

  • It was also the biggest conference win since the Irish have joined the ACC in 2013.

  • The Buffalo Grove, Ill. native came off the bench and scored three goals for her first career hat trick in the 6-0 win.
  • Van Zanten scored all three goals in just 34 minutes of game action for the second straight hat trick for the Irish against Miami after Sammi Fisher tallied one last season against the Hurricanes.
  • It is the 70th hat trick of all-time for the Irish and she is the youngest player to record a hat trick since Cari Roccaro in her sophomore year in 2013 against No. 21 Maryland.

IRISH RETURN TO FRIENDLY CONFINES OF ALUMNI STADIUM

  • The Irish return home to Alumni Stadium for the next four games of the 2020 season where they had a lot of success in 2019.

Full speed ahead for ACC fall sports

As games are set to get started this weekend the ACC says things are a full go in regards to athletic competition.

With under a week to go until the ACC opens its college football season, the conference gave reassurance Tuesday to their fall sports schedule proceeding as currently scheduled.

The ACC released the following statement on the afternoon of September 8:

Statement from the Atlantic Coast Conference:
“The ACC’s principal priority as we approach fall competition is the mental and physical wellbeing of our student-athletes. At each of our member institutions, our athletic directors and coaches have had conversations with student-athletes about returning to competition and attendant risks. After listening to our student-athletes, and considering the further advice of our Medical Advisory Group, the Atlantic Coast Conference continues to proceed with its plans for competition in fall sports. The majority of our student-athletes have indicated they wish to compete if public health permits, and that they have worked hard to enable themselves to compete safely. Any student-athlete must and will be able to choose not to compete at any time this season without losing scholarship support, and the decision to compete or not compete will not cost the student a season of eligibility.

“The public health situation is dynamic and uneven in the United States and at our member institutions. The ACC will regularly monitor the changing situation and is prepared at any time to adjust schedules and games to reflect changes in that situation. The ACC will also respect the decisions of individual schools as they continually assess the public health situation affecting their students and communities. As it has done all year, the ACC will carefully reevaluate the public health needs as we go along, relying on public health expertise and putting the health and safety of our surrounding communities at the center of our decision-making.”

The conference opens it’s football season this weekend with 11 of the 15 member schools in action.

Wake Forest, Duke and Pitt will also start their women’s soccer seasons this Thursday night.

ACC Suspends All Athletic Competitions

It’s not just spring football or the NCAA Tournament but now the ACC has suspended all athletic-related activities.  The conference released the following statement Thursday afternoon:

It’s not just spring football or the NCAA Tournament but now the ACC has suspended all athletic-related activities.  The conference released the following statement Thursday afternoon:

“The Atlantic Coast Conference has suspended all athletic-related activities including all competition, formal and organized practice, recruiting and participation in NCAA championships until further notice. The decision was made following consultation with the league’s presidents and athletic directors to mitigate the further spread of COVID-19.”

ACC Commissioner John Swofford added the following:

“This is uncharted territory and the health and safety of our student-athletes and institutions remain our top priority. This decision is aimed to protect from the further spread of COVID-19.”

It’s not surprising but I know I’m not the only one wondering right now, how long?  Will it be a couple weeks, a couple months or will it be something that goes all the way until football season and beyond?

I don’t know.

You don’t know.

The guy yelling on your TV doesn’t know either.

Take care of yourselves and each other in the meantime.  If you haven’t taken Coronavirus seriously yet, I’m not saying go into panic mode but it’s time to give it more thought.  Beyond just washing your hands take the time to learn more about how even if you’ll be fine, how you may put others at risk.

We’ll have plenty of content in the meantime at Fighting Irish Wire and as it appears there will no NCAA Tournament to watch, we’ll have a tournament of our own to track in the coming weeks.

Notre Dame Cancels In-Person Classes

The University of Notre Dame announced Wednesday that in-person classes will be cancelled until at least April 13.

Notre Dame students are on spring break right now but won’t be returning to class next week and won’t be returning to class in a physical matter for at least a month.

The University of Notre Dame announced Wednesday that in-person classes will be canceled until at least April 13.  The university has also canceled classes for next week in order to prepare for all classes to move to the online format starting March 23.

Now to the question most Notre Dame fans have – what does it mean for the athletic teams?

The outstanding women’s lacrosse team played today, moving to 7-0 after defeating Vanderbilt 16-6.

The now-ranked baseball team is set to play this afternoon at Radford.

The basketball team begins play tonight in the 2020 ACC Tournament that is being held in Greensboro, North Carolina.

And according to Bryan Driskell of Irish Breakdown, the football team will continue with spring practice as scheduled.
