Notre Dame will try to play spoiler vs. Florida State in home finale

Notre Dame will stumble its way into its regular-season finale Saturday against No. 11 Florida State.

Notre Dame will stumble its way into its regular-season finale Saturday against No. 11 Florida State. Having lost four in a row, the Irish (9-14, 6-11) will have to settle for playing the spoiler role as the Seminoles (15-4, 11-3) try to clinch the outright ACC championship. The Seminoles, which include NBA prospects Scottie Barnes and M.J. Walker, probably are the sole reason this game will be the Irish’s first on an ESPN network that’s not the ACC Network (ESPN2) for the first time in a long while. Then again, it’s not like the Irish have deserved greater exposure.

The big question is whether this will be Mike Brey’s final game at Purcell Pavilion. With the Irish limping to their second finish below .500 in three years, many are wondering if Brey has outlived his usefulness in South Bend. At the very least, let’s hope that the students who will be allowed into this game treat Brey a little better than they did Wednesday. After 446 wins over 21 years in the same role, he deserves the respect he’s earned.

Notre Dame football notes: Longest regular season break since…

This Saturday, Notre Dame will conclude their longest break between regular season games in a long time. Find out details here.

Notre Dame’s game against South Florida feels like forever ago.

By the time the Irish and Florida State do battle on Saturday night at Notre Dame Stadium it’ll have been a full three weeks since Notre Dame suited up for a regular season game.

Does that feel like a long time?

Of course, as well it should.

In case you were wondering, that’s the longest break between regular season games Notre Dame will have had since Knute Rockne’s first year as head coach.

The following from Eric Hansen of the South Bend Tribune:

The last time the Irish went as many as 21 days between regular-season games was 1918, coach Knute Rockne’s rookie season, during the Spanish Flu pandemic. Thirty-five days elapsed between the Sept. 28 opener against Case Tech, a 26-6 win, and a hastily scheduled 67-7 rout of Wabash on Nov. 2.

The original opponent, Nebraska, canceled just as the Irish were departing for Lincoln, Neb.

Hopefully that long of a break doesn’t mean it’s too rusty of a Notre Dame team we see on Saturday night.  Based off how North Carolina looked against Boston College last week though I’m not expecting anything close to a flawless showing for the Irish.

However, it’s no excuse not to still cruise to a victory and 3-0.

Stay tuned to Fighting Irish Wire as we’ll release our staff predictions on Friday morning.

Notre Dame responsible for 1/4 of an ACC football first

The ACC is off to a fast start in 2020 and has reached a conference first with Notre Dame being 25% responsible for.

With the AP Poll being updated on Sunday we saw Clemson stay in the top spot while Notre Dame remained fifth. Joining the Tigers and Irish in the top ten though were seventh ranked Miami and eighth ranked North Carolina.

Four ACC teams being ranked in the top ten simultaneously is a conference first, with the poll dating back all the way to 1936.

If Clemson beats Miami as the sports books say they should do, it may be hard to see this happen again the rest of the year as the Big Ten and Pac-12 will be starting their seasons soon enough and likely creating more of a logjam after they get some games under their belts as opposed to pre-season hype.

In addition to the Clemson/Miami game this week, Notre Dame hosts unranked Florida State while North Carolina hosts Virginia Tech.

Early season college football TV times announcements to be delayed

Usually we start finding out early season kickoff times about now. That isn’t the case as this week. Read the latest right here.

We’re 100 days until Week One of the college football season getting going and 93 days until a handful of games kick things off in Week Zero.  Usually it’s right about now we get our first reports of kickoff times for early season games but those remain to be determined because of COVID-19.

Earlier this week it was announced in a joint statement by all FBS conferences, CBS Sports, ESPN, Fox Sports and their affiliated partners that these announcements will be coming at a later date than we’re used to.

“Collectively, the conferences and television networks have agreed to an extension for determining college football’s early-season game times beyond the standard June 1 deadline. These kickoff times and network designations will be announced at a later date as we all continue to prepare for the college football season.”

No word was given on when we may find out more and there is clearly no guarantee that the 2020 season will actually be played, although I get the feeling from recent actions that it’s seeming more likely by the day.

It’s worth noting that all of Notre Dame’s home games on NBC have already been announced, as has the Navy game in Dublin. The first Notre Dame game-time we’re waiting to find out is the September 26 contest against Wake Forest in Charlotte.

Watch: Mike Brey’s Postgame Rant Against ACC, Extended Version

We’ve already made a bit of noise about Mike Brey’s postgame rant after Notre Dame lost to No. 5 Florida State, 85-84, on Saturday night.

While the video from his own university told the main story, it didn’t tell all of it. Warchant, the Rivals site which covers Florida State, showed the rant from the other side of the room, and this one included more angry words from Brey after he got up and left without taking any questions from the assembled media. If you love videos like this, this will be right up your alley.

Watch: Buzzer-Beater Allows Notre Dame to Win Fifth Straight

notre dame uses miracle to escape with fifth-straight win on hardwood

It certainly wasn’t a masterpiece but for those who took it in it was memorable as Notre Dame improved to 5-1 on the season after a borderline miraculous comeback against Toledo just to force overtime before winning in the extra frame.

Trailing by three with 6.8 seconds remaining Prentiss Hubb missed a free throw that was rebounded by Dane Goodwin who missed a put back before another offensive rebound by John Mooney and a quick kick-out found Temple Gibbs for the potential tie.

And Gibbs shot got stuck between the basket and backboard, forcing a jump-ball with just 1.5 seconds remaining.

The good news was that the possession arrow belonged to Notre Dame so they at least had a chance, which they would take full advantage of.

Nate Laszewski was shooting just 12.5% from beyond the arc entering Thursday night and at one point saw his season total dip to just 2 of 20 (10%) from three-point-range.  He however stepped perfectly into the in-bounded bounce back and drilled the game-tying three as regulation expired, forcing overtime.

The Irish controlled things in OT as they didn’t allow a field goal until a meaningless, yet impressive buzzer-beater as the frame expired, escaping by the skin of their teeth with a 64-62 victory.

It was a night that very little went right for the Irish, shooting just 31.5% from the field and 8 of 35 from downtown (22.9%).  Factor in going just 10 of 17 from the free throw line and the victorious escape is that much more stunning.

Goodwin led the way for Notre Dame with 16 points.  Mooney who has been terrific this season missed Monday’s game against Presbyterian due to a stomach-virus and was just 3-of-11 from the field while scoring seven points.

Notre Dame returns to action Tuesday night when they host Farleigh Dickinson.
