Swinney: Clemson-UGA matchup ‘what you dream about as a kid’

Dabo Swinney and Clemson try to treat every game with the same mindset, like it’s the most important game of the season because it’s the game they are playing that particular week.

But even Swinney admits there is added excitement surrounding the third-ranked Tigers’ season-opener against No. 5 Georgia on Sept. 4 in Charlotte.

“It’s just so exciting,” Clemson’s head coach said in an interview with Kelsey Riggs and Eric Mac Lain during the ACC Network’s ACC Football Road Trip show at Clemson. “You can just kind of feel it in the air. And then you throw in the fact that you’re playing a team that’s good enough to win the national championship — and we think we’re a pretty good team — it’s just even more so.”

ESPN’s College GameDay will broadcast live from Charlotte ahead of the highly anticipated showdown between the Tigers and Bulldogs, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium and will be televised on ABC.

There has been no shortage of hype and hoopla heading into the game between two teams hoping to contend for a national championship in 2021, and it’s the type of dream matchup that Swinney embraces as a coach and knows his players do, too.

“It’s been fun,” he said. “It creates a lot of conversation. You’ve got GameDay and all that stuff right out of the gate. You’re going to Charlotte, it’s national TV. I mean, it’s awesome. It’s what you dream about as a kid, and as a coach, you love these moments. So, we’re excited about it. And this is two teams that have big-time aspirations, and who knows, could play again down the road somewhere.”

One of the biggest challenges for Swinney and the Tigers in preparing for the game against the Bulldogs is the fact that while each team has had an entire offseason to get ready for it, neither team really knows what to expect from the other and there’s so many unknowns going into a season opener like this one.

“There’s so much,” Swinney said. “You get 12 days. You think about that — 300 and something days, all we’ve got is kind of each other. It’s so different from all the other sports. Basketball, baseball, you got to play a million games. But in football you get 12 days that you have on a schedule, and the rest of the year is spent preparing for those 12 days. And you get in the rhythm of the season, you get in a routine.

“But that first game, it seems like it takes forever to get here. There’s so much to do. There’s the most unknowns of any time of your season. You never have this much time to prepare. You know the least at any time because you’re basing everything on last year and last year’s people. So, there’s just so much. It’s the first game for a lot of people. Lot of first-game reminders and procedures and sideline organization and just a lot to get ready for.”

Mac Lain excited for future matchups for Tigers in ‘Alliance’

This past week commissioners from the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 announced the formation of a historic alliance between the three conferences.

The formal announcement did not include specific terms of the alliance but featured talk of future scheduling.

“Τhe football scheduling alliance will feature additional attractive matchups across the three conferences while continuing to honor historic rivalries and the best traditions of college football,” the statement released on Tuesday said.

Former Clemson offensive lineman Eric Mac Lain hopped into the conversation on the alliance Thursday after the Tigers’ practice at the fields behind the Allen Reeves Football Complex.

The ACC Network analyst visited practice in conjunction with the networks ACC Football Road Show and shared the matchups he wants for Clemson with schools in the Pac-12.

“Oregon was really good in my career so that would have been fun to go there and host them here,” Mac Lain said. “I think when you think of big name brands it would be fun to play USC and to see over there in LA and what they’ve got going on.”

Mac Lain played on the offensive line for the Tigers from 2011-15 and served as a captain on the first team to reach the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in 2015. He’s excited to see how the alliance contributes to the evolving nature of college football with Clemson at the center.

“It’s going to be really fun to see which way college football goes, it’s an ever changing landscape,” he said. “The only thing that’s important for this area is that Clemson is going to be square in the middle of all of it, there’s no question.”

Football season has finally arrived. Time to represent your Tigers and show your stripes!

Swinney eager for ‘heavyweight matchup’ with Georgia

All eyes will be on the Duke’s Mayo Classic on Sept. 4 as Clemson and Georgia renew their historic rivalry at Bank of America Stadium.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is not exempt from the excitement surrounding the matchup that carries a rich history of hatred between the Tigers and Bulldogs. He showed his excitement for the game in an appearance on Packer and Durham on the ACC Network Wednesday morning.

“It’s Clemson-Georgia, the history of Clemson-Georgia that goes back for years and years and years. Fans are excited and always have been,” Swinney said. “We’ve had a couple matchups with them — one here, one there, now we’ve got a neutral site. So, I think people are excited.”

Only 70 miles separate Clemson, South Carolina and Athens, Georgia which creates a natural rivalry in terms of recruiting. But over the last two decades both Clemson and Georgia have played on the biggest stages in college football.

“It’s as expected. These are two great programs. For the last decade, these two programs have represented the best of the best,” Swinney said. “Both teams have been in the playoffs, both teams have been in national championships, both teams recruit well. We recruit a lot of the same territory and things like that. Both teams are in the top five preseason and all that stuff.”

Last season fans missed out on the pageantry and excitement that makes college football special as stadiums limited capacity in the midst of the pandemic.

But in less than two weeks Bank of America Stadium will welcome a full capacity crowd of 73,778 split right down the middle as the Tigers and Bulldogs play for the first time since 2014.

The return of a raucous environment and packed stadium add an extra layer of excitement for Swinney as he looked ahead.

“And then you throw in the fact that nobody was at the games last year and people are excited to come and get back in the stands and be able to see some football, in particular a game like this of this magnitude,” Swinney said. “I mean, it’s a heavyweight matchup right out of the gate.”

Since Swinney’s first season as the Tigers’ head coach in 2009 he set five goals for each one of his teams: to win the opener, win the division, win the state, win the conference and win the closer. This season the goals remain the same for Clemson as the date with the Bulldogs looms.

“In college football there’s so much unknown, especially in an opener. We don’t get any preseason games, so it’s for real the first time you step on the field,” Swinney said.

“And then throw in the fact that it’s two really high-level teams playing each other, just generates a lot of conversation.”

TV broadcast team for Notre Dame season opener announced

Who will broadcast the Notre Dame-Florida State game?

With the first games of the 2021 season almost here, the time has come to find out who will be announcing the ESPN-broadcast games. Notre Dame opens its season Sept. 5 at Florida State, giving it a Sunday primetime spot that will be reserved for NBC Sunday Night Football in the weeks to follow. Of course, this being a road game means the Irish will open 2021 on ABC. We now know that viewers who tune into the game will hear the calls of Joe Tessitore, Greg McElroy and Katie George.

Yes, I can hear several of you rolling your eyes at the mere thought of Tessitore and already trying to figure out how to sync the Irish radio call with your TV using your DVR. After all, Tessitore’s Monday Night Football broadcasts with Jason Witten and Booger McFarland are widely regarded as some of the worst in that program’s long history. However, the addition of George from the ACC Network should provide some insight into the conference that might otherwise get lost. McElroy doesn’t seem to get that much hate either, so I guess two out of three ain’t bad.

An ACC Network analyst made a bold prediction for Clemson’s D.J. Uiagalelei.

In a conversation about which ACC quarterback would throw for the most yards this season former Tiger Eric Mac Lain picked Uiagalelei.

But he took the prediction one step further and said the Clemson quarterback will make history.

“It’s gonna be D.J. Uiagalelei, Clemson’s first ever Heisman trophy winner,” Mac Lain said.

Mac Lain has very high expectations for Ross, Clemson receiving corps

Former Clemson offensive lineman and current ACC Network analyst Eric Mac Lain has very high expectations for Justyn Ross and the rest of the Tigers’ receiving corps heading into the 2021 season.

Mac Lain expects Ross, who missed last season due to a congenital spinal issue which required surgery in June of 2020, to make a splash in his return to the field this season while setting himself up to make a lot of money in the NFL following his redshirt junior season with the Tigers.

“I think first-round draft pick,” Mac Lain said on the ACC Network when asked about his legitimate expectations for Ross in 2021. “This guy looks like Julio Jones when he walks out. He’s big, he’s from Alabama, a scary sight to see. Of course, wearing No. 8. He’s that good. He’s that dominant of a player.”

Mac Lain’s fellow ACCN analyst, EJ Manuel, pointed out that Ross is certainly not the only Clemson wideout to watch out for this season.

“You’ve also got E.J. Williams. You’ve got Frank Ladson, Jr. You’ve got Joseph Ngata,” Manuel said. “These guys are loaded, man. They might’ve actually got better at receiver, to be completely honest, as far as size, top to bottom. So, it’s pretty crazy.”

Mac Lain believes this year’s Clemson receiving corps has the potential to be as good as the group of receivers he played with that featured several guys who went on to play in the NFL.

“I was in a room with Deandre Hopkins, Sammy Watkins, Martavis Bryant, Charone Peake,” Mac Lain said. “These guys I think can rival that, which is crazy to say. It’s a little unproven. I’s going to be proven early and often this year.”

In his first two seasons as a Tiger, Allen recorded 21 career catches for 300 yards and four touchdowns over 27 games with one start.

Documentary about Notre Dame’s 2020 season to air on ACC Network

Set you DVR.

It’s still hard to believe that we just had a season in which Notre Dame was part of a conference. The Irish made it count, qualifying for the ACC Championship Game and then, making the College Football Playoff. Now, you can relive it all in the ACC Network’s new documentary about Notre Dame’s 2020 season.

“Notre Dame Football: A Year in the ACC” will debut on the ACC Network at 8 p.m. EDT on Monday. Among the highlights will be the story of how the Irish joined the ACC for the season, a feature on Daelin Hayes, behind-the-scenes footage from the Irish’s regular-season win over top-ranked Clemson and interviews with key personnel from the season.

While the 2020 season paled in comparison to some of the more memorable seasons in Notre Dame history, it still is one the best to unfold over the past decade. If you have the ACC Network, give it a watch so that you can remember what it was like as it all happened.
