A whopping 489 Ohio State athletes recognized as Academic All-Big Ten

Not just succeeding on the field, but in the classroom as well. #GoBucks

Ohio State athletes haven’t just succeeded on the field, but have also worked awfully hard off it. Not only did OSU have a perfect APR score, but it also outpaced all Big Ten programs with 489 Academic All-Big Ten honorees for the 2023-2024 academic calendar as announced this past week.

That’s not an Ohio State record, but a huge number for an athletic program that ha shad a ton of success in the classroom over the last few years (don’t let anyone tell you any different). OSU had 552 honorees during the 2021-2022 year, and duplicated the 489 total last year.

Of the 489 being recognized, 262 came from the spring, 103 from winter, and 124 from the fall. To received All-Big Ten honors, a student-athlete must be on a varsity team, have been enrolled full time at the institution for a minimum of 12 months, and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Well done by all of these student-athletes and their hard work during this past calendar year.

Seven members of Wisconsin basketball team receive All-Big Ten honors

The winter term Academic All-Big Ten team was unveiled this past week and 73 Wisconsin Badgers athletes made the cut, seven of which were on the men’s basketball team.

On Greg Gard’s team, starting frontcourt mates Tyler Wahl and Steven Crowl made the list, while Kamari McGee, Isaac Lindsey, Markus Ilver, Isaac Gard and Ross Candelino were also included.

Wahl in particular maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA, joining Owen Lindmark from the Badgers men’s hockey team as the only other athlete to do that with Wisconsin.

Of the other sports, the Women’s Basketball team (6), Men’s Hockey (11), Men’s Swimming & Diving (15), Women’s Swimming & Diving (23) and the Wrestling team (12) made up the rest of the 73 athletes recognized.

Forty Ohio State football players named Academic All-Big Ten

Forty Ohio State football players were named to the Academic All-Big Ten team on Thursday.

We often like to talk about what the Ohio State football team does on the gridiron, but there’s some pretty good stuff going on off of it as well — most namely in the classroom.

It probably doesn’t get broadcast and advertised enough. For not being known as one of the highest of high academic institutions like Northwestern or even Wisconsin or Michigan, OSU has been pulling its own academic weight without a doubt.

Just today, the Big Ten announced its Academic All-Big Ten athletes and the Buckeye football team has a total of forty that made the list. Across all sports, OSU had a record total of 120 athletes that were recognized, up from 112 last year. To earn the honor, an athlete must maintain a 3.0 or better overall GPA and be enrolled for at least 12 months.

One football player deserves a special note of congratulations as well. Offensive lineman Harry Miller is one of just 60 Big Ten athletes to show an overall GPA of 4.0. Rumors are, he’s pretty smart.

Seven Spartans named Academic All-Big Ten in men’s basketball

Michigan State earns second most Academic All-Big Ten honorees among the basketball programs.

Michigan State basketball achieved excellence both on and off the court in 2019-2020.

Seven members of the MSU men’s basketball team were named Academic All-Big Ten Monday afternoon. The honorees are: Kyle Ahrens, Connor George, Jack Hoiberg, Thomas Kithier, Foster Loyer, Xavier Tillman, and Cassius Winston. The seven award winners was good enough for the second-most in the Big Ten. Wisconsin led the way with nine.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be on a varsity team, as verified by being on the official squad list as of March 1 for winter sports, who have been enrolled fulltime at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

An interesting tidbit: Of the 946 student-athletes honored, 23 have maintained perfect GPAs throughout their entire college career. Of those 23, SEVEN are from Michigan State’s men’s and women’s swim and dive teams. SEVEN! That is incredibly impressive for the swim and dive teams.
