Instant reaction: Nick Singleton dazzles as Penn State overpowers Ohio

Instant reaction form Penn State’s blowout of Ohio, featuring a glimpse of the future

Penn State fans got a glimpse of the future of the Nittnay Lions, but maybe that future should be now. Freshman running back [autotag]Nick Singleton[/autotag] rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns to help Penn State overwhelm Ohio on Saturday, 46-10.

Penn State quarterback [autotag]Sean Clifford[/autotag] passed for 213 yards and a touchdown before getting an early rest midway through the third quarter. Freshman [autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag] entered the game to get some in-game experience under his belt, and he took full advantage of it with a pair of touchdown passes.

Singleton became Penn State’s first 100-yard rusher in a game since [autotag]Keyvone Lee[/autotag] rushed for 134 yards against Michigan on November 28, 2020.

Penn State’s defense was locked in all game long as well. With the exception of one second-quarter touchdown drive by the Bobcats, and some late fourth-quarter action, Ohio’s offense was unable to get much pressure on the Nittany Lions defense. Penn State had just one sack in the game, courtesy of Johnny Dixon. The defense did not force any turnovers in the game, but there were some nice performances to take note of from players like [autotag]Adisa Issac[/autotag], [autotag]Abdul Carter[/autotag], and [autotag]Curtis Jacobs[/autotag].

Next up for Penn State is another road trip. The Nittany Lions head to Auburn in Week 3 for a mid-afternoon game on CBS next Saturday, September 17.

Ohio will be on the road as well next week with another game against a power conference opponent. Ohio visits Iowa State, who will be coming off their rivalry game with Iowa.

Abdul Carter ejected for targeting on his first career play at Penn State

Penn State freshman linebacker ejected for targeting on first career snap

The collegiate debut of linebacker Abdul Carter lasted exactly one play on Thursday night against Purdue. The four-star linebacker from Penn State’s Class of 2022 was ejected for targeting following a video replay review in the Big Ten opener after Carter hit a defenseless Purdue player going for a loose football.

That is quite a tough way to make your college debut. By the rule of the game, it is targeting as the play was dead on an incomplete pass.

But FOX rules analyst Mike Periera wasn’t thrilled about the way the targeting rule was managed, directing blame for the lack of ability to use some common sense on interpreting and regulating the targeting rule in college football.

College football is officially back when targeting rules are being debated. Welcome back, college football.

To their credit, Purdue eventually moved down the field to score a go-ahead touchdown on the drive following the personal foul penalty on Carter. By rule, Carter was ejected for the remainder of the season opener, but he will be eligible to return to the field next week when Penn State hosts Ohio.

2022 Penn State football: Nittany Lions’ linebacker preview

Penn State position overview: Linebacker roster overview for 2022

Penn State is prepping for a season in which the program hopes to redeem itself on the national stage. After back-to-back seasons of mediocre results, Penn State is aiming to bounce back and prove themselves worthy of being in the Big Ten championship hunt, if not a little bit more.

Penn State kicks off the 2022 season with a Thursday night primetime matchup at Purdue on September 1. When that season begins, the Nittany Lions will begin to answer whether or not the linebacker depth is truly a concern for the upcoming year. After losing a pair of starters from last year’s team, Penn State has some big spots to fill at the program’s signature position.

Here is a look at what Penn State has on the roster at the linebacker position going into the 2022 season.

Overview:

Abdul Carter is another one of the talented linebackers in this recruiting class for Penn State.

It’s worth noting that when new defensive coordinator Manny Diaz first arrived to Happy Valley, the first film he watched was of Carter.

Seeing the development of Micah Parsons and his performance with just one year in the NFL, along with an impressive year from Brandon Smith has been huge for the Penn State defense. Carter has the talent to hopefully continue that trend of linebackers coming out of State College.

Carter had a good amount of offers across the country before deciding to stay and represent his home state.

Another point worth noting is that Carter was recruited by Brent Pry, who left for Virginia Tech. So, the fact that they were able to keep him locked in is huge.

If there is one thing that stands out from Carter, it’s his elite body frame. He stands 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds and is an explosive athlete. Carter does a terrific job getting to the quarterback, something that both Smith and Ellis Brooks flourished at this season.

Carter’s athleticism and body frame are two very crucial factors to his game that will help Penn State immensely on their defense.

Big board: Penn State’s 2022 football recruiting class by position

Breaking down Penn State football’s Class of 2022 position by position.

Penn State’s Class of 2022 has long been recognized as one of the top classes in the nation. The latest (and greatest) recruiting class to be signed by James Franklin looks to add some tremendous quality and depth to various positions across the roster and has some players to really look forward to watching grow almost immediately.

For a long stretch in this recruiting cycle, Penn State had the nation’s top-ranked class, and it continued to be ranked highest among Big Ten schools up until shortly before the early signing period. But there is no disputing the ranking of Penn State’s Class of 2022 is proof Penn State has been hitting it hard on the recruiting trail this cycle.

Here is a breakdown of Penn State’s Class of 2022 broken down by position.

Penn State football adds Philly four-star LB to Class of 2022

Penn State added a four-star linebacker from Philly to its amazing Class of 2022 on Saturday

Penn State’s impressive Class of 2022 added some more pieces to it over the weekend. In addition to securing a commitment from safety Kevin Winston Jr. out of Maryland on Saturday, the Nittany Lions added a four-star linebacker from Philadelphia in Abdul Carter.

Carter announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions and the Class of 2022 with a message posted on his Twitter account on Saturday evening. The four-star recruit chose Penn State over South Carolina in his final two. He previously made an official visit to Penn State toward the end of June, a couple of weeks after an official visit to South Carolina.

Carter was on hand for this weekend’s Lasch Bash, one of Penn State’s top recruiting events of the summer. It was his third time visiting the campus and program.

Carter also attended a football camp at Ole Miss and his offer sheet included LSU, Michigan, Pitt, Tennessee, USC, and more.

Carter’s addition to the Penn State Class of 2022 is a notable one as he is the second linebacker added in the Class of 2022. Carter joins Keon Wylie in the class at the linebacker position. Notably, both linebackers hail from the Philadelphia region. If they can each bring a little Seth Joyner or Jeremiah Trotter attitude to the Nittany Lions, Penn State’s signature position should be in good shape in the years to come.

Penn State still is holding on firmly to a No. 2 national ranking in the recruiting cycle for 2022, with only Ohio State sitting ahead of them. Alabama is surging up the national rankings and beginning to close the gap with Penn State, but James Franklin is easily on track to signing his top-rated recruiting class since his arrival in Happy Valley. Even if Penn State doesn’t end with the No. 2 ranking, Penn State’s Class of 2022 will impressively set the bar high for Penn State recruiting and be a significant factor in Penn State’s future for the next few years.
