Tony Vitello named ABCA National Coach of the Year

Tony Vitello named ABCA National Coach of the Year after leading Vols to national title.

Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello was named American Baseball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year on Wednesday.

Vitello was honored after guiding Tennessee to its first national championship in school history.

The Vols (60-13, 22-8 SEC) defeated Texas A&M (53-14, 19-11 SEC), 6-5. on Monday to win the 2024 College World Series at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Omaha. Tennessee.

Tennessee has reached the College World Series in three of the last four seasons. The Vols became the first No. 1 overall seed to win a national championship since Miami accomplished the feat in 1999.

The Vols won both the SEC regular-season title, along with Kentucky, and the SEC Tournament championship. Tennessee also set a single-season school and conference record for wins.

Over the last four seasons, under Vitello’s leadership, the Vols have won 211 games and four combined SEC titles. Vitello recently completed his seventh season as the Vols’ head coach.

Bryson Ware and Cole Foster earn ABCA All-Southeast Region selections

The left side of Auburn’s infield had quite the season in multiple aspects.

Senior third baseman [autotag]Bryson Ware[/autotag] and junior shortstop [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] were selected First Team All-Southeastern Region and Second Team All-Southeastern Region respectively by the American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings.

Ware being honored as first-team will put him on the ballot to potentially be named as an All-American. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams will be announced on Friday.

Ware will add this achievement to a resume that also includes a Second Team All-SEC and SEC All-Tournament Team selection. He set the program record for most home runs in a single season with 24. Ware led Auburn and placed top-10 in the conference in runs with 66, home runs, RBI with 63, slugging percentage with .731, and total bases with 163.

Foster also earned a spot on the SEC All-Tournament team after a productive season in which he hit .336 with 57 runs, 75 hits, 13 doubles, 13 home runs, and 45 RBI. He placed second on the team in runs, third in hits, doubles, and homers, and tied for third in RBI. He ended the season on an 11-game hitting streak.

ABCA recognizes Tennessee’s program

ABCA recognizes Tennessee’s baseball program.

Tennessee was recognized by the American Baseball Coaches Association, earning the 2021-22 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award, presented by Sports Attack.

Tennessee was one of nearly 700 high school and college baseball teams presented with the award, which honors programs coached by ABCA members that posted a team GPA of 3.0 on a four-point scale for the entire academic year.

The Vols posted a 3.32 GPA for the 2021-22 academic year, while also excelling on the field.

Tennessee (57-9, 25-5 SEC) won the SEC East division for the second consecutive year, the SEC regular season and tournament championship in 2022.

2022 is the second consecutive year Tennessee has been recognized for academic excellence by the ABCA.

Seven Vols named to Rawlings/ABCA All-Region Teams

Seven Vols named to the Rawlings/ABCA All-Region Teams.

Seven Tennessee baseball players were named to the Rawlings/America Baseball Coaches Association’s All-Southeast Region Teams.

The seven honorees represents a Tennessee program record.

First-team selections from the Volunteers include: Trey Lipscomb (third baseman), Jorel Ortega (second baseman); Drew Gilbert (outfielder); Chase Burns (right-handed pitcher); Chase Dollander (right-handed pitcher) and Drew Beam (right-handed pitcher).

Tennessee outfielder Jordan Beck received second-team honors.

Tennessee, the No. 1 national seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, saw its season come to an end June 12, losing game No. 3 to Notre Dame, 7-3, of the Knoxville Super Regional at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Vols won both the SEC regular season and tournament championship.

Tennessee finished 57-9 (25-5 SEC).
